Ouch.

And thats in a country thats essentially handheld-centric. I'm wondering what its been like for the Vita in the States.

The PS Vita never appealed to me. But now...it still doesn't. :/

1. They desperately need a price drop, with the 3DS at 170$ US is DEFINITELY not helping.

2. They need to release more titles to appeal to their target audience (which at this point is anyone who's willing to buy one).

Mankind's true moral test,

consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy.
And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle,
a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it.

Considering they're reportedly losing $100 per unit sold, I don't think that'll be in the cards for a while.

Not to mention even if they did drop the price significantly, Nintendo is making $50 per unit sold, so they have room to drop the price of the 3DS and DSi XL even further, not that they necessarily have to, the 3DS is still selling extremely well.

Their launch line up was considerably better than the 3DS, people just don't care for their selection of games, or price point.

They make up for at least a part of that loss with every sale of their flash cards. You can't tell me it costs 60$ to make a 16gb SD card.

If it's generally believed that the PS Vita launch lineup was stronger than the 3DS lineup, isn't it a little contradictory to say that people didn't care for the selection of Vita launch games? Honestly I think it's all in the price point. If Sony would have had a lower launch price, I don't think we'd be having this discussion.

You're right it doesn't, but are people buying those? They need a price drop too

I guess, but the launch games are better than the 3DS' (according to review sites anyway.) But they're not selling any.

FTFY.

It will never succeed with the way they are doing it. They are trying to squeeze down console games onto a handheld. It doesn't work and people doin't care.. that was proven with the PSP, i don't know why anyone would think it would be different now.

Who are the people around here that have the Vita? Why'd they buy it and do they like it?

So far this is a repeat of the PSP, its like they didn't learn anything.

Sony never learns anything. The PSP didn't fall into obscurity after the first two years or so because Monster Hunter arrived on the system, exploded, and the Japanese started throwing tons of support its way to take advantage of that. Despite the rampant piracy. But 3DS has Monster Hunter now. There have been rumors of Vita getting one as well, but those rumors all point to it being a port of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Ver. Which itself was simply a PS3 "HD Remaster" port of the PSP game released in 2010.

For the remainder of the year all Japan has slated for release (that isn't shovelware) are 4 ports, 1 derivative sequel, and 1 new, original game. Of those ports, two of them are or will also be on the PS3. List:
- Ciel Nosurge (04/26 - Dating Sim; gonna bomb. Hard.)
- Kidou Senshi Gundam Seed Battle Destiny (06/07 - Gundam fighting game, so it should see some success)
- Persona 4: The Golden (06/14 - Port of the PS2 game with some new stuff. And DLC.)
- Metal Gear Solid HD Edition (06/28 - The long delayed Vita port.)
- The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - Evolution (August; port of the PSP/PC game. Ain't moving systems.)
- Final Fantasy X HD ("2012" which, in Square language, means December 2014. Also coming to PS3.)

Tokyo Game Show isn't until September.

And for the rest of us, there's...
- Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention (Just released)
- Mortal Kombat (05/01)
- Resistance: Burning Skies (05/29)
- Gravity Rush (06/12)
- Madden NFL 13 (08/28)
- Call of Duty (November)
- Assassin's Creed (November)
- LittleBigPlanet ("2012")

E3 is in June. Don't expect much.
...not much.

Disgaea 3 is intriguing, but certainly not worth $250 :\

At least they have....Lumines.

To be fair, it seemed as if a lot of the launch titles were pretty solid games in their own right. Sony just couldn't expect that to be enough for any significant portion of the market. They seriously needed one major release each month leading up to the holidays to make any sort of lasting dent with that price tag (+ hidden fees).

Also, Disgaea 3 can be had for $20. Assuming you already have a PS3, but even if you don't that would be a better investment than a Vita. I suppose there's the whole $50 of Disgaea 3 DLC on PS3 that's included with the Vita version, but eh. Still the same game.

I really like the Vita as a console. I've been very impressed by it. But I was never going to buy it, because I have no use for it. Sony's problem is that they haven't figured out how to target those who would potentially buy it. That was never going to be me.

I have no idea what kind of market Sony was expecting to pick up. There was next to no marketing for it, nothing to draw in customers. Tgey should have just attached the ability to use it as a phone. A phone that has the ability to play full retail games? I could but that. But as-is it just isn't going to happen.
