Nintendo announces...."Nintendo Network"
So yeah, Nintendo is finally building a unified online experience that they hope to be on par with XBL and PSN. The service will cover both the Wii U and 3DS, no word on whether this will launch with the Wii U or not though, I'd like to think it will...but who knows.

Since the beginning. Your PSN user ID is used to play every online game (except the MMO's correct me if I'm wrong though) that makes it a unified online system.

Good news. Nintendo's previous online offers have been utterly mediocre. Quite frankly, playing by sending each frame's instructions by post would be better than what the Wii can manage.

Nintendo truly is lost in the sauce when it comes to online cause fundamentally they do not believe in it. They outright said gamers don't want online and they were wrong. They are just trying to catch up to the interconnected world but they don't really believe in it.
