MS sales figures update: 66 million 360s, 18 million Kinects

Microsoft's first CES 2012 stat is in and it's good news for Kinect. The software giant has shifted 18 million Kinect sensors in total, alongside 66 million Xbox 360 consoles, making it the best selling console in the US during 2011. Microsoft's Xbox LIVE service is up to nearly 40 million members, and momentum for the company's Xbox products doesn't appear to be slowing down. After selling 1.7 million Xbox 360 units in a record breaking November, it's no surprise that Microsoft is proud of its Xbox growth.

The numbers, unlike the Sony numbers I just posted are sold to retailers aka shipped numbers. So it's hard to compare the information based on this.

However, what looks likely is this: They both had a damn good holiday season.

I'm surprised at how many people bought the Kinect. I, personally, had no desire.

Same here. I'm never touching the Kinect. I bought a move, and that wore thin after about two days. I like it, but I just don't see myself using it.

I bought a kinect after the drop to 99$. It's alright, the only game really worth playing is Child of Eden. It's a pretty fun play; it's reminiscent of Panzer Dragoon, and oddly enough a rhythm game as well. Unfortunately other than that, most titles are pretty lack-luster for it.

I think the most important figure was that Microsoft has 40 million xbox live subscribers, well over half of the number of people who own consoles.

I think a majority of kinect sales are from 360 bundles when they were cheap.

I'm going to assume the Xbox Live stat is any and all members, including silver? If that's all gold....then holy ****.

Still, seems like both Sony and MS had nice holiday runs. Good for them.

Yeah, my brother's fiance who works at Toys R Us said they sold like hot cakes because people are looking for a new novelty to use since no one uses the Wii anymore.

Plus, she said a ton sold on Black Friday and a couple of subsequent deals when the 4GB console with Kinect was $199. She bought one for my brother but they've not touched it at all.

I have no interest even though I just bought a 360 a few months back. I probably won't get Live, either.

That XBL number consists of Gold and Silver accounts, though.

The Kinect is a good party/family device in a Wii-ish sort of way. We used it for hours every day last year during Christmas and it didn't get much use from then to Thanksgiving this year and then it was back in action for a month and a half. I do look forward to Skype integration... the facial tracking in video chat on the Kinect is science fiction and it's awesome.
