Evil My e-mail to Sony concerning the YLOD

To whomever it may concern,
I recently had the YLOD," Yellow Light of Death" happen to my 80 gig ps3. I purchased this console new less than 2 years ago, for the sum of over $500.00 USD including tax. I have contacted the Sony repair line 3 times and was informed that it would cost $149.00 USD to repair because the 1 year warranty had ran out. This is prepostorous. To my understanding the PS3, by all accounts from Sony, has a life of 10 years. My console was very well taken care of, as all of my high-end electonics are. The problem is not mine alone, as this same YLOD has happened to many people. I will not be returning the console to be fixed, and handing over more money, when something of this price range should last well over 2 years, however I will be contacting The BBB, and the ACCC, informing them of the inherant hardware malfunctioning and the refusal of Sony to fix the product for free. If you are not aware of this law, let me enlighten you,
"The Sale of Goods Act 1979, specifically section 14 which stipulates that all goods sold must be of satisfactory quality, which includes durability." Given the price paid, and the nature of the item, I believe the "Durability" of said product is not meeting expectations. I have been a loyal Sony fan since the PS1, but now i have serious doubts. Congratulations, you have lost a loyal customer. I would appreciate any return replies, either by e-mail, or phone.

Heads up to Crazy Jamie for info on the Sales of Goods Act!!

Just so we're clear, the "10 year life" of the PS3 is not related to an individual console, buddy. It's related to the lifecycle of the Playstation 3 system. The hardware will last for a projected 10 years, the name "Playstation 3", what Sony refers to when they talk about a 10 year lifespan for a PS3, they aren't talking about individual consoles, means they won't start introducing a PS4 until 10 years after the PS3 was launched.

Thanks for the heads up concerning the system life cycle, but you have to admit for the price paid, the console should last longer than just under 2 years. I'm missing out on uncharted 2! ARRGGGGHHHHH! (shhh, i'm gonna get a slim anyways)

The Sale of Goods Act(s) only apply to the UK. So if you are from the USA (as your currency suggests) there's not much point in quoting it.

lol ditto that on the YLOD, 60 GB model, launch system, with full BC, crashed last night in the middle of an empire mode on DW6: Empires... it sucks...
anyone know if reflowing the solder on the CPU/GPU works, temporarily or not?
lol Sony's two-word response: Oh Well.

There is a guy named Gilksy on youtube that has a video that shows how to reflow the system in great detail. Apparently, it worked, but how long it will last who know's? I thought about trying it myself, but i just swapped my YLOD ps3 for a gamecube, ps2, and a bunch of games. Gonna get a slim anyways.

I remember doing those self fixes on the PS2 and it ended up making the console run worse and worse every time I fixed it until it just gave up and died. I mean, you can try it but don't expect anything great.

Mmmm, simple solder reflowing. I could use a quick buck, perhaps I shall go back into fixing consoles. Works for the E-74 and RRoD, but I wasn't aware of the YLOD having the very same problem.
Interesting...very much so.
In case of emergency console hardware failure: I'm here.
Don't worry.

In addition, it only applies to the contract made when purchasing the console. So you can only use the Sale of Goods Act against the store that you bought the PS3 from, not Sony.

Is ACCC not the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission? Why in the world would you threaten to contact an organization that's on a completely different continent?

It's amazing to me that such a short email could contain such a myriad of mistakes, each of which having the caliber to individually negate the point of the entire email.

Please tell me you posted this here to proofread before you sent this off?

I hadn't even spotted that. That's brilliant.
