How do you play for trophies?
So the other thread brought up this question.
How do you deal with trophies? The two basic categories of course being, "I try to go for all of them", and "I don't care if I get any", but how do you treat your games? One of those, or something else? For me, generally, I get the trophies that aren't going to take me out of my way. I don't do things that are overly time consuming just for a little trophy display, or things that will require too many repeats I won't bother with. (For example, despite my love for the GTA series, I refuse to beat GTA IV 100% again just to get all the trophies. Not doing those damn pigeons, no siree.) But if it's something like, "do this slightly obscure thing that won't be too hard but will cause you to work", sure, I'll go for that one. Not saying I take the easy route, since I'll still try for challenging ones sometimes, but, I don't care enough about having the trophies to need to Platinum all my games, instead I just get the ones that aren't going to cause too many problems.

Does the trophy system work the same as the ahievement system or how does it differ?

Basically yes...except Trophies don't have point values, they just come in 4 varieties; bronze, silver, gold, and each game has one platinum trophy earned for getting all the other trophies.

For me it directly relates to how much I enjoy the game itself. For example, Fallout 3 has recently become my favorite game yet. Because of this, I simply can't get enough of it. The trophies provide me with an opportunity and incentive to take my playing of the game a step further and do something I wouldn't normally do. I almost have them all, the expansion packs threw me off.
Now on the flip-side, Mirror's Edge was a game I just played essentially because I felt like I had to. I thought it would be better and while I enjoyed it, I didn't like it enough the get all the trophies for it. I tried going through the game without firing a weapon because I wanted that trophy, but on the last level I accidentally hit the fire button instead of the slide button. Now while the bullets didn't kill the enemy, they still hit him and made it impossible for me to get the trophy. I wasn't going to go through the campaign again for that one trophy, or any of the others. I think I only got a few outside the trophies you get for completing the chapters.

![]() That said, what I tend to do is try to complete a game normally like I would any game (normally with handhelds at the moment) and any trophies that come my way is a good thing. Then I'll move onto the next game with an intent to come back sometime and "complete it 100%" with another replay and anything else that it asks for. How long it'll take before I give up on that quest depends on the game...

Usually I'll beat a game all the way through, then i'll go back and get a few loose ones..then put it on the shelf and come back later for the mulitple runs trophies...this is both to keep the game from going stale..and to give me a reason to play it later.

For me, I don't take trophies too seriously. I love the idea that there's an added incentive to master the game, but like some previous posters have said, I'm not one to go out of my way. But if the trophy regards a challenge that would be fun (an example being a Wipeout trophy where you try to beat a certain time in a lap) rather than tedious (a trophy where you have to collect 500606 items in a level), I'm down to try it out.

The Wipeout trophies are DUMB. "Reach level 50 in a Zone event", yeah okay. I think my record is 35, and that's on a really easy Wipeout Fury level. "Complete 20 perfect zones", yeah okay. My record there is MAYBE 12. Then there's one you have to beat the time of like 30.2 on Anulpha Pass on the lowest speed setting. That's my best map overall, I can fly and I don't know if I've ever lost a race on that map online or offline, and my top time is like 34.3 I think (on that speed.)
I'm definitely not the best player in Wipeout, but I'm competent, I've beat both the HD and Fury campaigns with all gold metals, but some of the trophies for that game are ABSURD.

I can't remember the name of one of the trophies where you have to beat a certain lap in....forgot the name of the map, but you have to use a certain ship as well. There are videos on youtube of people beating it...basically you have to cross your fingers and hope your ship bounces at a certain angle at a certain ramp to which then you can use a speed boost to which then your ship flies through the air to which then you hopefully don't hit the ground at an angle that slows you down even in the slightest or else you won't get the time you need in order to get the trophy. I mean, you could be a god at this game, and still pull your hair at how hard these trophies are...its like the games physics have to be defied in order to make ends meet. But I guess thats part of the fun.

I noticed during Uncharted 2, while I don't necessarily go out of my way for the trophies, but i'm sort of looking for treasures...and if i find a weapon i haven't got the "x kills" trophy for yet, i usually drop my current weapon for it...even if it may not be as useful where im at.

The Uncharted games are probably the easiest ones I've seen to Platinum. Granted I won't but they are quite do-able. The hardest one to get is beating the game on the Crushing difficulty. I'm sure its hard but the game has a forgiving checkpoint system so its not anything super hard.

I tend to care more about the trophies on games that I might be able to get the platinum for. Some games require you to play the online multiplayer for hundreds of hours to get certain trophies and unless it's an amazing game I'm not going to put that kind of time into it. Other games, like uncharted are more reasonable and I do the same thing with dropping better weapons just to get the "x kills" trophy even though it makes it unnecessarily more difficult for me.

I am having trouble with X-Men Origins - Wolverine, just two trophies left, and I am being held back by them.
1) It seems nearly impossible to kill Deadpool on the hardest difficulty level. 2) Aerial Master - even though I have clearly seen on the screen that I have done this, it never registers, and I have tried over and over again, so it seems that a Platinum is impossible on this game as well. ![]() Would be interested hearing if anyone else has had this problem. |
