Windows 7
I recently upgraded to Windows 7 professional. I know what you are thinking "It isn't out yet!". Well In my college I am a member of the MSDNAA (Microsoft Developers Network Academic Alliance) so we get the retail version of it early. My question is, considering the other threads going around this forum, what are your thoughts on it? Keep in mind I am only talking about the people that have it legally such as similar to me or through a beta or whatnot.
Personally, I like it, but it reminds me a lot of Vista. I never had a problem with Vista, but it DID act sluggish and bloated at times. Also, after being immersed into the Linux world, I can say that it might have a GUI that is a bit too bloated for some users. With that though comes some nice GUI features such as the ability to "peek" at windows without fully switching them. Also, it is faster than Vista. I like the new taskbar and how items are grouped by program. The rotators backgrounds are nifty as well. Any one else have any thoughts, concerns, comments, or issues with 7? |

It's what Vista should have been.
But it's good, at least the beta is. Peek is an especially handy feature, and the search is a lot better. Will probably pick this up soon after release. |

I've used the beta, then the release candidate in one form or another since january.
in my opinion, its everything that was good about vista, and nothing that was bad about vista.

As for the search, I don't know. I just did a search for a few, what I considered to be, easy finds and it took a very long time to find them.

i was able to mess around with it briefly on one of my friends computer. unfortunately i didnt get a chance to run any benchmarks or anything but it seemed to run pretty smoothly and i didnt notice anything wrong with the few games he had on his comp. i do like some of the features and according to him he says that its a bit better than vista is right now which is encouraging to me since its brand new and hasnt even had its first service pack.
when i get it next year i will of course turn of almost all of the eye candy. i just recently broke down and turned on those shadow thingies for my desktop display icons. im such an efficiency whore.

^^The 22nd.
It's great to be an Engineering student e-academy rocks. Too bad my university didn't offer the ultimate version but I can't complain. I've been using it for about a month now and I've had no problems. I have both the 32 bit (Toshiba) and 64 bit versions (Acer dual-boot with Ubuntu) and both computers are much faster and is more reliable. I did get the blue screen a couple of times but that was because of a problem with Toshiba power management system. I don't know if you can upgrade XP. When I tried to upgrade from Vista Home Windows 7 wouldn't do it because the option was only available for the Premium and Business edition. If that was the case with me I'm assuming it will be the same for XP, Luckly Windows 7 will save all of your XP files so you shouldn't have a problem.

what's the boot time? I've seen Vista take forever. But, I've got a windows box, and XP is enough until I hear for sure 7 actually has some improvements.
