Frozen PSP...
I've got a PSP in front of me, it switches on ok, but it doesn't load the theme that I set up for it, rather it waits about 20-30 seconds on the generic background and then switches itself off. I'd check to see if it's because of custom firmware, but I don't get as far as the XMB to find out. Battery's fine, I've tried it plugged into a charger, and when a game is in the PSP it barely reads it. I'd assume if it had been bricked on an update it wouldn't switch on at all...
Any ideas what could be causing it?

I think it's CFW. I have had a lot of bad things happen to my PSP, and now I need a new one cause of CFW. Though if your PSP is bricked I haven't heard anything like it. Usually the on light goes on, and the screen remains black for like 10 seconds then it turns off.

What's CFW? And I assume there's nothing you can do about it?

This is a PSP I've sold at work (the "I" in the first post created the hypothetical), the customer assures me they haven't tried to install custom firmware... yet, and it wasn't sold with any on it. Is there any way to tell without going to the System Information menu? It can't get that far...
Just an extra point, he did mention a theme that he had put on it though and it pauses right around the timeframe any theme would be showing itself. Could the theme be causing the problem if it's designed for a version of custom firmware and not the official Sony firmware?

If someone took a custom firmware update from online, it may still have the file on the PSP. So maybe if you plug your PSP into your computer it may show up under Game.

I can't even do that, it doesn't reach the XMB for me to check. There's no memory card in it either...

Check out the edit I made in post 5 about the theme just in case you missed it. I think I edited while you were posting the reply to the original post.

Ah. That actually could cause a problem. Maybe the PSP won't read the file correctly if it has no CFW.

So is there a way to do a data reset just by holding some buttons down when you turn it on? I imagine it's the only way to bypass the theme and get it off the PSP.

I don't think so. And if you can't get into the USB screen, I don't know what you can do.

Boot up the PSP and turn it off immediately, hold the slider up for at least 10 seconds. That will do a hard "soft-reset" it. Chances are, that wouldn't do much, but it's a good place to start.
Another thing to try is holding the R button on the PSP while it is booting. In CFW, a recovery menu will pop up. It will show if he installed CFW or not. If you let the battery run completely dry, the next boot-up will require you reset the time and settings. I'm not sure if it resets the theme or not, but IIRC it does.

I'll try that first one next time I'm in work. The second option's already been tried, I assume it's a theme that's designed to work on a CFW'd PSP but there's no CFW on it. Failing that I'll put the battery in another PSP because with it cutting out after 15 seconds it's not going to drain the battery too quickly.
