Kamelot + Firewind 4/5/08
went to this show last night, and it was absolutely brilliant. it was my first time seeing both bands, and they both blew me away.
the first band on the bill was Forever Slave, a fairly typical girl fronted metal band in the style of Within Temptation, and were pretty forgetable. Firewind were next, and before last night, i'd never really considered them anything more that just an average power metal band, but their 9 song set impressed me. it was very powerful and heavy, combining old songs with some off their new album, which is out this week. i shall definitely be revisiting their back catalogue. A masked woman with a violin heralded the start of Kamelot's set, Solitaire leading into Rule the World. it has to be said that the sound at the start was terrible, far too much bass, not enough guitar, keys or vocals, but they were sorted out after a couple of songs. the set was pretty much as expected, a mix of classic songs with half a dozen songs off Ghost Opera. it was definitely the best of the shows i've been to so far this year, i haven't been able to get the songs out of my head all day. full setlist: Solitaire Rule the World When the Lights Are Down Soul Society Pendulous Fall Centre of the Universe Abandoned Descent of the Archangel Instumental Jam (w/ drum solo) The Human Stain The Haunting Eden Echo Keyboard Solo Forever --------- Ghost Opera Love You to Death Karma --------- March of Mephisto |

Pretty much the same set list as I saw them back in October. And yeah, through the first two songs, you could not hear Khan or really the guitar until they smoothed things out during Soul Society. They have this amazing stage presence that I've yet to see any other metal band match on a small venue here.
Also, this October, we have Edguy opening for Kamelot. That is going to be one of the best shows I'll have attended. |

I saw Firewind at ProgPower USA last year, and I agree, though they were always just an average power metal band to me, they put on a very good show. Unfortunately, I have yet to see Kamelot. There is a chance I may get to go see them with Edguy later in the year... we shall see.

I envy you immensley, I was going to go to the show but I lacked the funds. Kamelot have always looked amazing live and Khan can hold his tone well, I'll have to see them whenever they come to the UK again =[

I've never actually heard Firewind but I've always wanted to look into them. Has anybody heard any of their stuff off of their cd's? Or only live?
Also, I did order Epica by Kamelot because it was the one with the most songs I liked from watching youtube videos, so I'm looking forward to that. Also, regarding all of the Edguy discussion, are they touring with anybody other than Kamelot? And is Avantasia going to be touring? |

Avantasia would be too hard of a tour to organize with people from so many different bands. I would not be surprised if Edguy played some songs as they have in the past with the other Avantasia stuff. Since Tobias is the main piece of that band, I assume they will play one or two songs from one of their Avantasia albums.
The only news of tours for Edguy is a dozen shows in America supporting Kamelot in most but they haven't added anything else since. |

Ah Power Metal at its finest. You were quite lucky to have been there.
