Pink Floyd

I'm not sure I've ever seen a Pink Floyd thread come down in my time here . . . time to start one.

I've got their four major albums (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall), and I think Animals is my favorite. Gilmour has some of his best guitar work on that album and I adore the song Dogs.

Floyd fans?

Floyd is probably my favorite band to listen to when I just want to chill. I love just sitting back and listening to the guitar melodies while I'm thinking to myself.

Heh, saw Pink Floyd and just had to post...

I really like their works and they are possibly the only very instrumental group I listen too. I only have a few of their more popular songs on my iPod right now. I would put their instrumental works on, but I cba.

He.Is.Legend, thank you for posting a thread about the greatest band ever.

Silverbolt, I'll agree that Animals is brilliant, but IMO Wish You Were Here is one of the best albums of all time, and The Wall gets so many good songs.

That's the next era of Floyd I want to get to know . . . Atom Heart Mother and Piper.

Crowing, I didn't know you were a Pink Floyd fan.

The thing with Pink Floyd is that the sum of all parts is so much greater than any single part. It's so much more amazing to listen to an album all the way through instead of the single songs.

I will say though that without Roger Waters, I can't really listen to their stuff. He was an expert songwriter and musical talent, and they are really lacking without him. I've seen Roger Waters live twice, both on Dark Side of the Moon Live, and he's just as amazing solo (even with about twenty people helping him) as he is with Pink Floyd.

Their pre-Dark Side stuff is really good as well. I love Meddle and Piper, but my favorite Floyd album of all time has to be The Wall.

Also, I am an advocate for the inclusion of either Sheep or Dogs in Rock Band. :3

I agree, I seldom ever talk about PF in terms of single songs . . . and when a friend of mine asked me to make a compilation for him, I had a heck of a time making it good.

I would literally die of happiness if a 17-minute song got onto Guitar Hero/Rock Band. Both those songs would be spectacular.

Personally, The Wall is my least favourite Pink Floyd album. Waters assumed too much control, and the lack of the other band members just made it essentially a solo effort. All in all (you're just a...), the whole album was just depressing, and I found it boring.

As for Animals, I think it's really underrated. I'd place it above The Wall, but I still think that Dark Side and Wish You Were Here are definately the top two. The thing I really love about Dark Side is that it has to be one of the only albums I own which I can listen to every song and like it. That's really rare.

I dabble in all kinds of music, but Pink Floyd is BY FAR my favorite band. By far.

However, I don't have much love for their pre-Gilmour stuff. Syd Barrett was just a little bit too crazy for me. There's a few select songs that I like, but for the most part it's not my thing. I like Roger Waters and everything, he has a really nice handle on the bass, but Dave's input is what makes the band incredible for me. Their keyboardist/miscellaneous guy (Richard Wright, I think) never gets enough credit. I'm not sure if he just throws notes in randomly or what, but they come out sounding perfect. I feel like Nick Mason never really got a chance to shine, but he's a great drummer as well.

Nobody has mentioned The Division Bell, which was the album where Gilmour really took the reigns. He just does such MASTERFUL guitar work. The melodies are fantastic. I can't get enough of them. I haven't decided whether or not he's my favorite guitarist but he definitely ranks very high. What a beautiful sound.

Live at Pompeii is one of my favorite things ever to watch. For those that don't know what it is, Pink Floyd staged a concert inside the ruined amphiteatre at Pompeii. I use the term concert loosely, because there's no audience, just Floyd and their sound crew playing their hearts out. They splice in little interviews of the members and oh God it's just so fantastic. I HIGHLY recommend this to everybody.

I'm a massive Pink Floyd fan. Can't stand The Wall - at all - and everything that came after. WYWH is alright, DSOFTM is good, but my absolute favourites are Meddle and Atom Heart Mother. I've yet to find anyone who thinks likewise, but I can't help it. I prefer the vocals, the complexity, the craziness - everything.
I mean, dude, Echoes.

Also, I'm not a fan of Syd Barrett. I've got his albums also, but while he's got a good track here and there, he just doesn't do it for me.

The Wall . . . I don't dislike it, it's just a bit too self-indulgent for my tastes (and this coming from a guy who claims The Mars Volta as one of his favorite bands). It seems quite obvious when I listen to it that Waters was just forcing his ideas on all the other guys.

Whose voice do you like better? I say Gilmour all the way, except for the song Sheep. I really like Waters' vocals on that song.

I prefer Gilmour's voice (he's also my favourite guitarist) but Waters is good as well.

Adding onto the 'sum of all parts' thing, I notice the members rarely get listed on 'greatest [instrument] lists' but when you put them all together it's just magic.
