1. Rush - Snakes and Arrows
Rush came back to form with an outstanding album that surpasses anything they've done since their prime in the early 80s. Radio hits, "Larger Bowl," "Spindrift," and the hugely successful "Far Cry" cemented the album as legit in the commercial world while songs like "Way the Wind Blows," "Armor and Sword," and "Main Monkey Business" prove Rush still has that edge they've had for over 30 years.
2. Nightwish - Dark Passion Play
With their old singer, Tarja Turunen gone, the band went in a different direction with more emphasis on melodies and male vocal integration with their new singer, Annette Olzon. Fans feared Nighwish was going to die but this album is arguably their best. Monster songs like "Bye, Bye Beautiful," "Amaranth," "7 Days to the Wolves," and the epic "Poet and the Pendulum" carry the album to the highest they've ever been.
3. Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos
There really isn't that much for me to say about this one other than it was exactly what a Dream Theater fan would expect: Epic length, premiere musicianship, and heavy doses of keyboards and Petrucci. "In the Presence of Enemies" are two amazing songs to open and close the album with social commentaries of the world all over their other songs. My favorite happens to be "Ministry of Lost Souls," which is a 15 minute masterpiece and a great summary of the band's talent.
4. Gamma Ray - Land of the Free 2
Technically it isn't out in America yet but Youtube has had it since the European release last month and I've been listening to it there. Finally, Gamma Ray has matched the original in terms of quality. "Into the Storm" is a great single for them with a great solo we haven't seen in a while. In fact, most of the album is fresh even though the subject matter is so overused. "Mother Earth" is one of the most intensely heavy songs ever and "Opportunity" is a direct homage to Iron Maiden as two riffs from their songs are played in the middle of it. A treat to metal fans that recognize them.
5. Kamelot - Ghost Opera
I really wish that this album was higher on my list. Black Halo was legendary, Epica was incredible, Karma was the start of their rise. Ghost Opera has some moments but is sort of a disappointment for Kamelot. That said, an average Kamelot album is still good. The title track, "Rule the World," "Human Stain," and "Silence of the Darkness" are just killer songs. The only problem is the less than stellar songs in the middle... but the band is so talented that they make up for it to save the album.
Worst album of the year:

Sonata Arctica - Unia
I hate that they did this. Reckoning Night was their previous album and it perfected power metal. Ecliptica was a tremendous album... Silence even had great moments. Unia just sucks. They turned pop with a terrible voice, no catchy music, and poor lyrics. They seemed like they just said "Hey, lets see if fans will still like us even if we put out the worst album ever." Well, it makes me sick and I hope they either quit music or go back to metal.

Exile on Mainstream, really? I'm a big matchbox twenty fan but I thought the album of "original material" was lame (with the exception of How Far We've Come). It seemed like they were forced contractually to put out another album of original material, so they wrote down the first four chords to pop into their head in order to get it finished as soon as possible.

Greatest hits disc was an A+, though.

They put all the best """"""old""""" songs on there and they put about 4 new ones.

But I agree, I would have rather them waited and had a whole big album of new songs.
