Tell us about your favourite band.
Use this thread to tell us about your favourite band. The idea is to expose people to music they normally wouldn't listen to, and ask about bands that sound similar to their favourites.
Rules: Choose ONE band. Put in some effort. More than 4 words description please. Tell us a little bit about the band and why you like them. Post links to mp3s, websites etc. _____________________________ La Quiete are probably my favourite band. They're an italian DIY screamo/hardcore band who have been around for a while and are about to tour the US with Phoenix Bodies. They're the only band i've felt compelled to own their entire discography, including compilations, on vinyl. I've seen them live twice, once when they toured the UK a few years back, and again this year when I travelled down to Leeds to see them. Yeah they scream a whole lot (although the newer stuff is less abrasive vocal-wise), but they have tons of melody too. Give them a listen if you want to hear some real screamo, and not some watered down commercial tripe. Official Site: http://www.laquiete.org/ MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/laquiete

my favorite is Creed and/or Alter Bridge. Along with Matchbox 20. Im not going to write a long review but go look Matchbox 20's music. It is like regular rock not hip hop or metal or any othe Crap.
I think people will like them. |

I reiterated:
Don't worry Civil and Freakish. Your opinions are the only right ones here. Nobody listens to anything but the metalcore bands you don't like so you say they are bad. Forgot the notion of being opinionated because the fact that you decided it is all that matters. While we're on the topic of that I'll make my opinion clear that I think emo music blows. THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSS MUCH! Except Joy Division, but seeing as you like to be unpredicatable with you "true" emo bands, I have no way of knowing if my tiny mind can even grasp to hold the idea of what fits into what. Did I mention genres are opinions too? I'm going to go back to enjoying my NOFX CD now.

If you like NOFX you should listen to the Lawrence Arms. Much, much better band.
Genres of music have the least leeway for opinion on the sole purpose that they are based upon musical theory. While you can continue to think that you can classify any band under any genre, you would be wrong. By the way, Joy Division (while a fun band to listen to, and Control was a great ****ing movie) is not emo. |

Genre of music is all opinion. You cannot argue that. One man may think Stevie Ray Vaugh is bluesy but another might think he has a funky sound. Think about it, just because a majority rules something does not make it a fact. The only thing that really makes facts is actuality.
Definitions of fact 1. something that actually exists; reality; truth: Your fears have no basis in fact. 2. Something known to exist or to have happened: Space travel is now a fact. 3. A truth known by actual experience or observation; something known to be true: Scientists gather facts about plant growth. 4. Law. Often, facts. An actual or alleged event or circumstance, as distinguished from its legal effect or consequence Nothing in there about majority ruling or musical theory.

But musical theory is...fact. Its how music is composed. How can it not be fact? As the fact that musical theory fits into the 4th definition of fact that you just posted proves you wrong. You can continue to think that genre is opinion but you would be wrong, just like every single music publication today. God I hate people like you who believe the fact that just because you have an opinion on something, you have the right to state it without having any justification for it. There's not even any justification that genre of music is opinion because all the facts are on my side. If you can come up with a legitimate counter-example, then maybe, just maybe I'll listen. But until then, you need to stop trying to play with the big boys.
One more thing: If you want to see an example of musical theory, watch "Amadeus," its all explained right there when Salieri looks at the sheet music for the opera Amadeus is doing and says it can't work until he looks at the theory behind it and realizes how amazing it really is. |

If genres are such a clandestein thing then why is their continual debate over whether Van Halen is hard rock? Or ever whether Primus is funky? Or over just what the hell Radiohead is? How can it be fact if it contradicts itself?

People don't look at music theory when they try to define bands. Or you have a band change its sound on an album, thus people are confused over what to call them. I'll use Hot Cross as an example. Their first album and two EPs( Cryonics, Fair Trades and Farewell, A New Set of Lungs respectively) are both screamo albums (real screamo too). Their latest album, Risk Revival, is a post-hardcore album (a rather ****ty one at that too). I'd generally consider Hot Cross an emo band (screamo and emo are interchangable in this case as the musical thoery is the same except for the vocals), as thats where a majority of their albums lie. If you want to have end-all be-all discussion, then you cannot define bands as genres but rather their respective albums. Still no opinion in the matter either. Anything else you'ld like answered?

Not really. I mean I guess you are technically right I won't be stubborn here. But it doesn't make your generated pessimism any more appealing. Music shouldn't be about slandering other peoples taste or trying to constantly apply labels to everything (Even if it is musical theory). It should just be about listening to what you enjoy and being able to share that without being ruled off by overbearing opinionated cracks. There's a big difference between saying "Eh I don't really like them" and calling a band ****ty. People don't demean your music (Save myself. I did earlier) so what gives you the right to demean theirs? I guess that's all I wanted you to see really. I have no clue if you will but I openly admit defeat where defeat is do I suppose.
Edit: Also I just found some hypocrisy. Quote You: God I hate people like you who believe the fact that just because you have an opinion on something, you have the right to state it without having any justification for it. Quote you: Yeah its a real damn problem here. Everyone here listens to the same generic metalcore ****. Tough to talk good music here anymore considering very few here can even namedrop real emo bands. I kinda miss that here Enjoy, and have a good day.
