High Court orders UK Pirate Bay block

Itís the first time that the courts have demanded ISPs block a specific site following accusations of piracy and strikes a big blow for internet freedom campaigners.

"The High Court has confirmed that The Pirate Bay infringes copyright on a massive scale," BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor said of the ruling.

"Sites like The Pirate Bay destroy jobs in the UK and undermine investment in new British artists.

"Its operators line their pockets by commercially exploiting music and other creative works without paying a penny to the people who created them. This is wrong - musicians, sound engineers and video editors deserve to be paid for their work just like everyone else."

ISP Virgin Media has told the BBC it will comply with the ruling, but that it maintains serious misgivings about its implications.

"As a responsible ISP, Virgin Media complies with court orders addressed to the company but strongly believes that changing consumer behaviour to tackle copyright infringement also needs compelling legal alternatives, such as our agreement with Spotify, to give consumers access to great content at the right price," a statement explained.

Not surprising, but Pirate Bay isn't happy about it.

A post on its website today refuted the court's claim that the site infringes copyright and called out the UK government for having double standards on free speech.

"The Western countries of the world all complaints [sic] about the censorship in Iran, China, Saudi Arabia and so on. But they are really the worst culprits themselves, having double morals in doing an even worse thing themselves," it argued.

"Today news was out that the UK high court has decided that TPB is 'massively infringing on copyright'. The facts that no copyright is being infringed upon here at the site was not a welcome fact, so that was ignored apparantly [sic].

"No one from TPB was invited to the court case, which would be normal to do in a democracy. This is not the first time this happens, it's been the same in most countries we're censored in. We have no right to speak since we're not rich."

The site then called on users to voice their discontent on the issue, warning that this could be the thin end of the wedge for wider internet censorship.

"Don't forget that we can't allow this s*** to happen. Next time they're coming for something else. And yes, there will be a next time if we don't stop them," read the post.

"Write to your ISP and tell them to appeal the case. Write to your local MPs and tell them that this is not allowed. Make sure your voice is heard. Remember, we're all the pirate bay, and we must stand united against the censorship from our opponents!"

I have no idea how TPB can claim that their site does not breach copyright. 99.999% of torrents are for copyrighted stuff.

There's a difference between censorship and copyright infringement.

Well, they're obviously breaking the law, to be honest. I'm sure somebody else will just take their place, though.

Now that there is a precedent, I would imagine that any site who would come in to take their place would be shut down pretty quickly...

It amuses my that TPB owners continue to insist that the site is kosher. It quite clearly isn't, and never has been. By all means contest this sort of thing on other ground, but suggesting that the site does nothing wrong is laughable.

Well, their thing is always seeing how far they can push it. They took off all the actual torrent links and replaced them with magnet links. Nothing is actually hosted on their site, but to be honest, neither did file sharing apps like Napster host anything themselves: it's their users. It's not that they really believe they're innocent, it's getting everyone else to believe it to support them.

But it's so impossible to really shut any of this down really. There are a ton of ways around this and people will turn to them once they learn how. Nothing has changed honestly.

I'm not sure why people think the fact that they don't actually host the content makes any difference. They directly enable people to access illegal content. It's obvious why they switched from torrent to magnet files, but ultimately it makes no difference.

Anonymous attacks Virgin Media for blocking The Pirate Bay

Quote:

Why? Because internet service provider Virgin Media has denied UK customers access to torrent sharing website The Pirate Bay.

"#Anonymous have just taken down #VirginMedia website again because of their involvement in the #Censorship of The Pirate Bay #TPB #OpTPB," tweeted Anonymous.

Virginmedia.com still appears to be down, although store.virginmedia.com loads as normal for us. The Virgin Media Twitter account doesn't appear to specifically reference the website being down, although some of the conversations reference it.

The Pirate Bay block was ordered by the High Court in the UK last week. Internet service providers like Virgin Media - and 02, TalkTalk, Sky, Everything Everywhere, etc. - must obey the order by law.

Now it seems the Pirare Bay is just relocating UK users to their Swedish site.

Makes a bit of mockery of the block!

Court orders Pirate Bay supporter to stop publicising ban work-around

The ruling followed a complaint from local anti-piracy group Brein.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Pirate Party wasn't best pleased by the court's decision.

"The judge decided to give the Netherlands another nudge on the gliding scale of censorship," read a post on its website.

"More and more bits of the internet will have to be censored because they might be used to get access to 'infringing' sites, until eventually most of the internet will be unreachable."

Meanwhile, the group's UK branch continues to offer a proxy on these shores, following the recent country-wide ISP block.

According to the party's campaigns officer, Andy Halsall, its service recently received two million hits over a single 24-hour period.

The British Phonographic Institute, which spearheaded the legal campaign against The Pirate Bay here in the UK - declined to comment on whether it plans to follow Brein's lead.

The Pirate Bay Knocks Anonymous, Gets DDoS'd themselves...

Interesting developments now...

So says The Pirate Bay.

"We do NOT encourage these actions. We believe in the open and free internets, where anyone can express their views. Even if we strongly disagree with them and even if they hate us," read a Facebook message from the Pirate Bay staff. "So don't fight them using their ugly methods. DDOS and blocks are both forms of censorship."

The DDOS attack, perpetrated by hacking group, Anonymous, was a response to Virgin Media's compliance with a high court ruling that requires British ISP to block access to The Pirate Bay. Anonymous' rage seems misguided, given that last year Virgin was one of several ISPs that refused to voluntarily block the popular file sharing site. While Virgin media is now actively blocking the site, the company insists that "changing consumer behavior to tackle copyright infringement also needs compelling legal alternatives, such as our agreement with Spotify, to give consumers access to great content at the right price."

The Pirate Bay asks that any users who support their cause, do so in a more positive and legal fashion:

"If you want to help; start a tracker, arrange a manifestation, join or start a pirate party, teach your friends the art of bittorrent, set up a proxy, write your political representatives, develop a new p2p protocol, print some pro piracy posters and decorate your town with, support our promo bay artists or just be a nice person and give your mom a call to tell her you love her."
Source...

Gee, I wonder what Anonymous will think of that?

The popular file-sharing website The Pirate Bay has been offline for nearly a day following a deliberate denial-of-service attack from an unknown source, according to its official Facebook page.

Since the attack, The Pirate Bay has been relying exclusively on its Facebook profile to relay information to the public. It first reported site issues nearly a day ago, suggesting it had heard reports from users that the site was inaccessible. As it turns out, the site was in the early throes of "a big DDoS attack." The Pirate Bay said it had "suspicions" about who might be behind the attack, but no one has stepped forward to claim responsibility for the service denial.

The attack was preceded by a busy few weeks that have seen The Pirate Bay in the news almost daily. After UK courts ordered that all UK ISPs block access to the controversial file-sharing site, Dutch courts followed suit and did the same by expanding a previous ban to apply to all ISPs instead of a few. Following the UK ban, the hacker collective Anonymous took credit for attacking Virgin Media with a DDoS of their own. The Pirate Bay discouraged the attack and called it a form of "censorship."

There is no word yet on when the site will be accessible.

What a mess... Seriously, this whole thing has gotten out of hand. Why would Anonymous go after Virgin? They're just doing what the government told them they had to do by law... Why not attack UK gov't servers? Or are they too afraid of the consequences?
