There are plenty of bands that have clean vocals whose lyrics I can't understand, so that hasn't really been a barrier for me. They are definitely an acquired taste, though.

Radiohead and Nirvana are essentially already at that stage (Radiohead less so, because they still exist). Same with Tupac. Foo Fighters might, but they don't seem to quite have reached that level yet. Muse will probably become fairly iconic, although it slightly depends on the direction they go with their next album.

Wonder whether Axl's continuation will affect Guns' legacy.

I think Slash retains his legacy. Once a great guitarist, always a great guitarist.

These are the artists that I told Op19 about when he originally asked me:

Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Linkin Parl, Beyonce, Blink 182, Outkast, Rage Against the Machine.

Keep in mind that people don't have to die to be considered iconic, and they can still be making music when they are considered legends.

As much as I love Blink, I think its hard to consider them iconic.
Same with Linkin Park, except I don't love them.

If Lil Wayne is iconic in 20 years I don't want to live in that world.

Love him or hate him, the iconic part is can't be denied. His popularity has skyrocketed over the years (in total correlation with his music becoming unbearable...)

I once thought I hated Lil Wayne. Actually, I know I still do. But the man has some songs I like. That aside, like the poster after you said, he can't be denied. He may not be as productive as Kanye West (in terms of producing), but the man has been around for over a decade and his star has been rising pretty much ever since. He's got his own record label, which has a least two stars besides himself, so even if he stops making music his name and influence will still be around for a while.

Also, if Wayne is iconic in twenty years, don't worry. You won't be living in this world. Not onl has he admitted to being a martian, he seriously looks like a roach, so I doubt he'd be affected by the global warming/nuclear fallout the way you or I would. If he's a legend in twenty years, or, hell, even still alive, expect the rest of the mutated cockroach population to really dig him.

to be honest i don't give a flying f*ck about icon status: if lil wayne becomes an icon(oclast) in the future, it won't affect my propensity to listen to music i like, so it isn't a big deal

That's very true, Conscience. I think all of us hear will continue to listen to who we like now unless something affects our decisions to like them, and not necessarily jump on the train of these "icons". Marilyn Monroe is an icon, I like movies but I have absolutely zero desire to watch a movie starring/featuring her. It makes sence musically as well.

He's nowhere near as popular as some of the bands and artists mentioned, but Scott Wino. Everything he does turns out good to great, and he is considered a legend within the Doom Metal community. It's a damn shame he isn't more well known. The same can be said regarding Bobby Liebling.

I'm going to utilize a little foresight on some of these.

Mastodon, Kanye West, Eminem, Outkast, The Mars Volta (And maybe ATDI), System of a Down, Incubus, Queens of the Stone Age, Audioslave (Maybe).

A lot of the 90s bands such as Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, etc., have pretty much already achieved legend status.
