GTA: VC Vice City-XBOX-Cheat/Controller question

Hello. I am new to console games and controllers. I cannot get cheats to work. I have an XBOX with a GameStop controller. For example: weapons cheat codes.

Question: Is "R" and RIGHT the same command as well as "L" and LEFT? and if so, which joystick or button is it reffering to?

R is the right trigger and L is the left trigger. Left, etc. is left on the d-pad.
