View Full Version : How do base stats/actual stats work?

I've just been looking at Azumarill and Medicham who both have abilities that double their Attack stat (Huge Power and Pure Power).
Azumarill has a base attack of 50 and a maximum stat of 218. Doubled, that would be 100 and 436, right? So why is it that a pokémon with a base stat of 100 only has maximum of 328?
Same thing with Medicham. It has a base attack of 60 that gives a maximum of 240. Doubled is 120 and 480. But pokémon with a base stat of 120 only reach 372.

I will look this up in a minute, but as far as I know Pure/Huge Power doubles the actual attack stat, but the base stat is unaffected; similarly, double the base stat is not double the actual stat. There's a formula, I'll look for it.
Ok, according to Bulbapedia:
Disregarding individual values, effort values, and Nature, a level 100 Pokémon's stats in Attack, Defense, Speed, Special Attack, and Special Defense will be exactly 5 more than double its base stats in each, while the HP stat will be 10 more than the Pokémon's level plus double the base stat (except in the case of Shedinja, whose HP is always 1).
Or, in algebraic form (if you find that easier):
All except HP: Stat = (Base Stat * 2) + 5 + IV + (EV/4)
HP: Stat = Level + 10 + (Base Stat * 2) + IV + (EV/4)
Both * 1.1 or 1.0 or 0.9 depending on nature, HP excludes Shedinja
Putting in base 50 and 100:
Stat = (50 * 2) + 5 + 31 + 252/4
Stat = 100 + 5 + 31 + 63
Stat = 199
199 * 1.1 = 218.9 (everything rounds down, so 218)
Stat = (100 * 2) + 5 + 31 + 63
Stat = 200 + 5 + 31 + 63
Stat = 299
299 * 1.1 = 328.9 -> 328
I hope this cleared everything up.

If you're mathematically minded:
Increase in base stat and increase in actual stat are not directly proportional. If you were to draw a graph of base stat against actual stat the line would not go through the origin. You can reduce the formulae that Cytosine provided to a a=kx+c format, and c=/=0
If you're not:
Doubling base stat does not double actual stat because the calculation involved EVs and IVs as well. However, if you have an IV in the stat of 0 and 0 EVs in the stat (and the stat isn't HP), doubling the base will get very close to doubling the actual stat. 10 stat points away, I believe.
EDIT: I didn't notice that Cytosine's formulae only apply at level 100. I'd assume the formula posted below by Bulbasaurus Rex is correct.

Max Stat (except HP) = 2.2 x Level + 108.9 (Rounded Down)

Ah, I forgot it only counted at level 100, but he was asking about max stats (which only occur at level 100).

Aye, that it has. Thanks. I can see where I was going wrong now.
And they say Pokémon is for kids...

Kind of ridiculous, but behind every game are formulae and RNGs.

There's no mention of Up+B anywhere in that formula... Was it all a lie? :confused:

Thats because in the cut off part it states that the whole formula is gotton rid of when Up is held down while the B button is smashed as many times as possible.

That better be sarcasm in those 2 previous posts.
