I just thought I would ask If you are an "out of the closet pokemon player"? Do people know you play pokemon? Do you play with other people?
I am an in the closet player. My highschool is judgemental as h*ll. If people found out I play pokemon I would be made fun of for the rest of highschool. I had one friend who played with me for awhile when DP had just came out (distantravenge if any one remembers him) but once we found competitive battling and I got better then him, he lost interest in it. I got more and more into and I started 6-0ing him untill he finally stopped trying, so now I play alone or online.

I'm also an in the closet pokemon player. My highschool is also extremely judgemental, so the only person who knows that I still play is my very close friend. I traded in diamond to get platinum, and have played it for a while. Its one of those games that never get old, no matter how much you play it. when i have nothing to do during break, I find myself trying to breed and raise strong pokemon, and get lots of money to buy better items. I'll be in college soon, so I probably won't be telling anyone any time soon.

I kept it on the down-low in high school, but heck, I don't care who knows now that I'm in college.
It's one of the most in-depth RPGs out there. With so much to do, it won't get old. And with competitive battling for me to [someday] test out, it can get only better. Not to mention more games coming soon.

My school is the opposite (well grade 8 and up), everyone there either plays it, used to play it or just wont admit that they dont like it.
anyone in my grade (12) who admits to not liking pokemon is thought of as strange.
Everyone just says how can u not like pokemon? y dont u like it?
so ive always been out of the cupboard, sometimes i still bring pokemon to school to trade and battle with people, about a third of us still bring gameboys with 1st/2nd gens.
but if no one at my school liked it i would probably be an in cupboard player untill i left school.

I've found that peoples' tolerance to things like Pokémon tends to increase as you get older. When I was in year 8-11 (age 12-16), anyone who discovered I play Pokémon thought I was strange etc, so I didn't talk about it (unless anyone asked). Now and last year (year 12-13, age 16-18) people are mature enough to accept that everyone has their own preferences and you can't expect people to succumb to the norms, so they couldn't care less, so I make Pokémon references quite freely if I think it's relevant or necessary. Plus a few people bought the DS games out of interest and a sense of nostalgia for the GBC games.

I keep it to myself. The only ones that know I play is my family. I don't think everyone else would understand my desire to play pokemon. So I don't tell anyone that I play.

Out of da closet, for me. Some people think you're weird for playing Pokemon, some people think you're cool. I could care less what they think, though. Funny story, I brought my old Yellow Version to school and was playing it after a test in my U.S. Government class when my teacher was like, "ZOMG! Guess what?!?! I has me Red in me desk drawer!!!" (Well, maybe not as weird or creepy like that.) We battled, the whole class forgetting their test and gathering around. I pwned--1st gen Charizard kicks ass! He actually had a nicely balanced and planned out team. First time I've ever bested Mr. Reynolds at anything. :D

Most of the people I know have played it at some point, so there won't be too much judgement, but most people don't really ask me about it so the subject never really comes up. I know of at least two people who play it, and if anyone asked I would say I did; I guess I'd be an open player, then.

I bet i could easily bring a blue version or something and play it openly, but if I were to bring my Pearl version I dont think people would accept it as much.

It's true. I mean, lately, all of the "classical" games are becoming more popular. People love you if you even own an N64 or a SNES nowadays, but could care less about a Wii. I think it's that nostalgia thing. That's why I think people are more accepting of R/B/Y/G/S/C over the newer gens.

I think more people are more accepting of RBY because we all played them when we were younger. It was awesome then. Now, we've "grown up" and should play more mature games than just the next generation Pokemon.

I am an out of the closet pokemon player. I played it in highschool and I still play pokemon now ( obviously). I could care less if people say I am too old for it, I play the games I like.

I ONLY play on shoddy. No one knows i play the stuff. Even my teams are in a file labelled "Art Coda" and aren't called anything related to pokemon. If people ask about the file (I'm open with my computer), i say it's photoshop coding, and that it's just something to let me *spouts off many words which no one cares about/gets* and life goes on. If people knew, the word 'shun' comes to mind. Also, 'ridicule' hangs in the air. So it's a secret. Hell, my DS is stashed in my desk with all the other stuff i don't want people to find.

I don't have (or yet want) a DS or DSi, but I'll still openly play Emerald and LeafGreen occansionally. I'm also really looking forward to getting the Pokémon Scramble WiiWare game that was recently announced (From everything I've read, Pokémon Ranch is really dumb).
I'm also open about still watching the Pokémon anime. In fact, I've seen every episode and movie released in the United States so far except for the 2nd Mystery Dungeon special. I don't care if people know I still watch cartoons, as long as they're good ones that at least do a decent job of following the laws of physics.

Dark Link112 you lucky b*****d. If high schools and colleges weren't so judgmental almost everywhere, there wouldn't be so many closet game players across the world. I'm going off to college this august, and I'm fortunate enough to have a roommate who is also a big game player, and won't be so judgmental about what games I play.... I hope:D

Well for me i guess you could call me and out of the closet player, middle school was no problem what so ever cause i'd always take my GBA and saffire and play with a friend of mine but it was mainly just me and him no one else really cared enough to say anything the only bad thing about that time was the fact that my GBA was stolen along with saffire :( and i had all of the legendaries plus jirachi and a few other specials but after that i quit for a while and i just started playing the leaf green that was just lying around and got into it again so i bought platinum last saterday and am currently using my sisters DS since i dont have one and i even have a friend whos about to get it because we were reminiscing about the good ol' days with gold and silver...how i miss my shiny hitmonchan and drowzee.

ouch, how very convenient thread :D
hmm personally I tended to play pokemon more often when I was around 10-12. In the 90s no one really cared about you playing pokemon because most of the time they were playing it too as kids, first and second gen games that is.
Later on I strolled proudly into the gaming store and bought pokemon ruby for my trusty old gameboy advance, yeah you heard it right, the old gameboy advance not SP. :D
In fact I own also the first gameboy model, gameboy color, advance, and advance SP (bought it pretty late though, reduced price), so that's that. Haven't bought DS yet though.
In high school I didn't really play pokemon or gameboy games at all, not too much time and all. Before high school my pokemon addiction had started to fade already, I only really played during trips because its great to have some kind of portable gaming device naturally.
and finally on this very day, my 19th birthday, I started contemplating on buying DSi and pokemon platinum, after having watched some pokemon battle videos on youtube. :D
maybe a late comeback to pokemon is possible?
okay guys, I know there must be some ppl older than me who are playing pokemon here... Admit it. :paranoid:

I stopped watching the anime series a long time ago, I only regularly watched the kanto series. I gotta say that even as a kid, I found the episodes horribly repetitive, I mean the general plot is always the same, its just too predictable.
Ash goes around and maybe finds a pokemon, I mean he's always bent on catching them all, but he never evolves his pokemon, making that a pretty hard goal to achieve? Even if he gets good pokemon, he usually sets them free, (yea im looking at you butterfree and primeape)
L.O.L.Z. !1!i1?+
Brock starts hitting on policewomen and nurses, gets rejected, gets dragged away... I mean, maybe its just me but quite frankly its weird that Misty never got any attention from anyone. Plot and the series have no logic in them at all, hawt girls like misty don't get any attention and so on...
Okay maybe I'm just thinking dirty things, its a kiddies' show after all
Team rockets gets its ass kicked at the end of every episode, and they're hewed into the sky thousands of kilometers away. Blah, same old ****, yet nothing comes out of it...
the really cool things that I liked in pokemon series were the other characters beside ash and the rest of the retinue so to speak.
Gym leader battle episodes were awesome, even though sabrina episode/s were... scary. Makes you wonder if Gary went through all that to get his badge :D. Also the other special battles such as those versus Gary were pretty epic and stuff.
Also because pokemon movies tend to have more content than the same old predictable pokemon series, I always liked every one of them. The first pokemon movie I even went to see about a day after the premiere here in Finland.

well im 17, and i just started playing it again like a week ago so theres definatly gotta be some older people playing. sounds like everyones actually going back to pokemon now, i never thought i'd be playing it again but i was completely wrong. but i'd say go and buy a DS (if you still have GBA pokemon games i would suggest getting a Lite and not the DSi because the DSi doesnt have a GBA port and you can use that port to migrate pokemon from the GBA game to platinum) and i would definatly suggest platinum cause there is some ammount of extras to it compared to D/P.

i wouldnt stretch so far as to say everyone is getting into it. Many people are just because they used to play but still not many peopleover the age of 10 play.

well of course not everyone but quite a few people i know are actually planning on getting platinum which is a suprize to me but you never know sometimes you just have a need to play games you havnt played in a while.
