I was looking at another of the threads in this forum, where there was mention of hope for a Second Generation (Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal) remake, and remembered reading a speculation article about it on Bulbapedia ages ago and thought it might be an idea to link to it. So I found the article, and at the bottom of it was a link to this news article (http://bulbanews.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Major_Pok%C3%A9mon_game_to_be_announced_this_month ), dated Saturday 2nd May 2009.
As announced by the official Japanese Pokémon Web site and TV Tokyo's TV program information on Friday, Pokémon Sunday is set to make a "world-exclusive first announcement" in its Pokémon Game Arena segment on May 10.
The most recent episode previewed the annnouncement, showing two balls, one gold and one silver, which will be opened to unveil the announcement's subject. Based on this as well as the fact that the game is said to have been the center of much speculation, many fans believe that the announcement will pertain to two titles: the Pokémon Gold and Silver remakes. It is also theorized that Junichi Masuda will appear on the show to make the announcement, since he did so both last month and the month prior in regard to other game-related scoops.
The next issue of CoroCoro, which will be released May 15, is likely to contain the announcement as well.
I found myself wondering if this has any substance, so I checked the Serebii site (http://www.serebii.net/index2.shtml) as well, and sure enough:
In The Games Department
New Game Announcement
Earlier today, in the Pokémon Sunday variety show and it's website, it was announced that, during their episode next week, they shall reveal a world-exclusive bit of news. Their website states this will be done within the Game Area of their show so it is more than likely a brand new game. There is much speculation as to what the game is, with the general consensus being a Gold/Silver remake which does match up with some new figures of Chikorita, Cyndaquil & Totodile being released in Japan on September 19th 2009, but nothing is confirmed yet, so if you see other sites reporting it as a specific game, remember it is not confirmed that it is that game. CoroCoro is also due out soon after that so that should also contain information on the game announcement. We'll bring you more on this as it happens so keep your eyes here.
I also found a thread about it on the Smogon forums (http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54402), featuring plenty of scepticism, as is understandable.
I think that news like this merits its own thread.
Thoughts?

If it is true hopefully they'll let you travel between regions again. That was be excellent. It'd also make catching the legendary dogs, Ho-oh and Lugia so much easier.

Bear in mind that this new game may not even be a G/S/C remake. It's just that many people think it will be. Either way, it's something to keep eyes and ears open for on 10th. All we know at the moment is it will be a world exclusive anouncement, it will be something to do with the Pokémon games, and it will be announced on the 10th May. Everything else is speculation.

Wasn't Emerald released just a few months after Fire Red and Leaf Green?

Someone posted something in the Smogon topic the effect of a reminder that Emerald was released not very long after FireRed and LeafGreen. Also bear in mind that it will probably still be several months before the release of whatever game this is. :D

A G/S remake would be awesome, but I'm still not interested enough to get a DS(i). I would consider getting a DSi if it had a GBA slot, but without it I'd rather have a DS Lite. That being said, I'm personally hoping for a new Wii game, one much better than Pokémon Battle Revolution.
If I'm really, really lucky, it will be a Wii game that will have a Pokémon game DS emulator (like how Stadium had a Pokémon game GB emulator) with a DS slot Wiimote accessory so that I can get Platinum and play it on my Wii. I know that's really out there, but I can dream.

Just a quick update on this, because I've been poking around a bit again. These updates are from the Smogon thread on the topic (link in the first post).
Update #1: A certain person who has a history of being both right and wrong about leaks has said that this is in fact a Gold/Silver remake. He says there are rumblings about a new Battle Revolution style game for Wii to be announced at E3 but isn't sure of that. Take with a grain of salt.
Update #2: Naxte points out (http://www.smogon.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1906672&postcount=47) that they also put up two blurry posters, coloured gold and silver, that represent the games to be announced.

Update #3
Further Confirmation from the blog of Alex Lucard who works for Pokemon Beckett Collector in the US and The Pokemon Company in Japan.

- will not be called DuskGold/DawnSilver, nor WhiteGold / MoonSilver
- chances are it'll hit Japan this November
- not a spinoff
- two games
- remakes

"Years ago when I did my “Top 30 RPG Countdown” The second generation of Pokemon games made it all the way up into the top five. Perhaps, PERHAPS sometime in 2009 (Say, May 10th, 2009), we’ll get to return to Johto in one form or another."
Update #4
Apparently the "May 10th" part of his March post was editted in later as discovered by Serebii. Serebii also points out the following:
Sorry, but you all know how I hate the spread of misinformation.
However, that said, in September there are going to be re-releases of figures for the Johto Starters in Japan. Last time this happened was January 04 with the Kanto starters. We all know what came out then ;)
EDIT: I hadn't actually looked at those links myself until now, but http://diehardgamefan.com/2009/05/04/pokemon-a-return-to-johto/ merits attention, it pretty much says that this is definitely a Gold/Silver remake.
News should be out at around 12:30AM GMT / 7:30PM EST / 6:30PM CST / 4:30PM PST, so look for news if you're online around that time.

Sorry, I forgot to put in a day. It will be on Sunday morning/Saturday afternoon.
The Japanese Pokémon website has now confirmed that there will be G/S DS remakes called HeartGold and SoulSilver.
I hope they change the names for the English language version, those are sucky names. :(
The killer question: assuming we will be able to travel back to Kanto like in the originals, will they include the Sevii Islands?

The even more pressing question: Which one do I get?
Did they give a planned release date?

I assume that the spot on Sunday's show will give us a Japan release date, but we'll have to wait for a Nintendo of America announcement to hear about the North American release.

They've said it's coming in fall/autumn this year for Japan. The fact that there are some new models/figures of the Johto starters supposedly being released in September is making some people think that September will be the month. A timescale for anywhere else has not been announced yet.
The fact that I own Pokémon Gold says I should go for Heart Gold. The fact that Heart Gold is an eww name says I should go for Soul Silver. Ah, the dilemna.

hmm.... if I remember correctly, if you put in pokemon onyx on youtube, it should answer your question.us

No it doesn't. The video results that turn up are a hack someone made of one of the GBA games and a false cover for a game.
Also, this thread has been dead for more than 7 weeks. Don't post in dead threads.

Woah! I havnt been on this site in months! Anywaysss ive seen some othere stuff on a different website that makes updates on these games daily with new info, umm well just like yellow version you can have a pokemon follow you around, but this time ints not limited to pikachu, it can be any pokemon in the game. Just put it first in your party. You can also turn around and check its status and all that stuff by talking to it. Also theyve made the controlls i guess nothing but touch screen.

i couldnt catch lugia or ho-oh, so i had to settle for taking on the elite four with entei, skarmory, gligar, totodile, miltank, and tentecruel.
