I'm sorry if I'm overlooking where this has been answered before.

So, I've got Platinum. Its like exactly the same starting out as Pearl/Diamond. Does it get different later on? Or does it just change the major pokemon that you can catch?

Mostly it's all the same, but there's quite a few things that got changed in some way or another. Serebii has an exhaustive list that does a better job than any summary could provide, so here it is (http://www.serebii.net/platinum/changes.shtml).

CAFM lied to me. The bastard said I could catch absolutely every Pokémon in Diamond!

You can't technically catch every Pokémon in D/P/Pt, but you can obtain every Pokémon, with such things as the Pal Park, the GTS in Jubilife, Wi-Fi Trading and Nintendo Events.

Except to my knowledge, you could do all of that in Diamond/Pearl too. I doubt I'm going to take either of our copies of Platinum back because I am enjoying playing through them again, but it's still disappointing. Gone are the days when I could start out with a bloody Charmander, the only good fire Pokémon ever.

Agreed. Charmander/Charmeleon/Charizard kicked ass. I remember the days when you could go through all eight gyms using only Charizard and HM slaves... good times.
You could always go with FireRed/LeafGreen.

I bought FireRed when I got Diamond, so I could trade off a Charmander. The only problem is you can't do that until you get to the Pal Park which might as well be the end of the game. I'm not really eager to take the Charizard off of my Diamond for Platinum, since then I wouldn't get the two previous stages.

Gamefreak needs to man up and make one huge game with every single region.

That's where Dittos and breeding come in...

Mm-hmm. That would be beautiful, truly beautiful. I really want a remake with the Jhoto region. I miss the sheer awesomeness of it.
