View Full Version : How do you find new music?

This is a question for people who actively search for new sounds and artists that please their ears.
I do a lot of my music shopping through music blogs I've picked up over the years, as well as hand-dandy websites like last.fm. I have a few other tricks up my sleeve from my days as a DJ, but other than that, it's mostly an online thing.
How about you?

MySpace.
When I formed my first band in 2005, I signed up the band on MySpace and started using it. I had never had a desire to be on there, but I did it to promote the music.
Over time, several other up-and-coming bands added my own, and I checked them out, and instantly became a fan of theirs.
Two specific metal bands that come to mind are In This Moment and EkoTren; I literally saw both of these bands go from high-powered regional bands (in California and Florida respectively) to nationally touring signed bands.
I have seen both bands up close, and I have hung out with both bands, and they are truly phenomenal both on stage and in person.
Also, for a while, as antithetical as this might sound, I got into several bands from the radio. Bands like In Flames (no joke), All That Remains, Mastodon, Tool, Memento, APC, heard them on the radio and had to check them out.
I also got into bands like Unearth, Soilwork, Mnemic, and a few others when I was in said 2005 band; my guitarist and I carpooled to practice and he put in their CD's and I jammed on them totally.
As far as new music now, I guess I just kind of use MySpace still, a bit passively, and iTunes as well. Haven't had any time to really seek out new music.

Mostly through people I know. They will tell me to check out a band and then I'll go from there and look through similar artists if I like them or sample some stuff at iTunes that it recommends for me.
But the majority of stuff comes from people bringing me a CD to listen to.

Usually either by recommendation or by exploring other artists that make music in the genres I like. Sometimes I read reviews too and if something gets a great review and sounds like something I'd like, I'd check it out. Also, there's a LOT of classics that I know of but haven't yet listened to. Every once in a while I'll just get something highly renowned that I think I would enjoy. Oh, and checking out artists that are known to have influenced my favourite bands.

Well I have two main methods of finding bands. The first is the more challenging way. I go to Metal-Archives and put in the genre I'm looking for (either Power or Thrash Metal) and click on bands that have cool names until I find one that sounds good, then go order their cd online (unless I could actually find it in a store).
The other more simple way, is that I go to a couple forums where Thrash is big and I look at their reccomendations and check them out.

Like Kid_A, I find alot of my music on music blogs that I've come across. Every now and then I'll get a good suggestion from a friend.

Pretty much my only ways of finding new music are a select few of my friends (because well over half listen to a totally different genre of music to me) and here. Though I don't come here for suggestions very often.

My friend is great for more underground music such as various types of jazz, electronic, experimental/instrumental and avant-garde music. Otherwise its merely a process of researching a band I've heard of and determining whether to have a listen.

Radio, mostly. Also my friends and bloggers. I actually heard a really cool song that I liked...
AND IT WAS MAINSTREAM! I never thought that would happen.

Friends recommentations mainly. Though only a couple of my freinds like the same stuff as me (metal), they generally have some good recommendations. Otherwise i'll look on myspace and youtube.

Exactly.
Except I read reviews perhaps a little more.

Either Last.fm or blogs. I find more music than I can listen to through those two sources, so adding any other kind would probably end badly.
