What's your favorite?

Mine were (and still are): Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden.

With threads like this, please give us a little more than band names. Reasons why these artists are your favorite, or, at the very least, songs to check out by the bands that you enjoy.

Oh, golly . . . this was a great time for music, in my opinion.

Probably comes down to Soundgarden and Model Engine. I love Soundgarden's complete disregard for the "rules" and Chris Cornell's voice back then was just UNBELIEVABLY awesome. And Model Engine, for the awesome lyrics and oddball compositions that still sounded very melodic and hook-y.

Yeah. This was definitely a great time for music when it was creative and original. A lot better than what's out nowadays.

Though the grunge genre has been milked real bad, I think it was at its best when these bands were in their height of success.

R.i.p Layne Staley - to me he had the most talented voice in grunge. Nobody could sing like him and hit notes like he could.

Alice In Chains for the win. Layne Staley was a vocal god, and Jerry Cantrell is an insanely good guitarist. He might not do super crazy shredding solos, but his work had more soul, emotion, and technique in it than most of what was coming out at the same time.

On a side note, it's good to see that AIC are continuing with making music. No one will ever be able to replace Layne, but I like how they're still out there trying to honor his memory by doing this. The rest of the band has even said that he would have wanted them to continue. I also haven't heard theri new singer yet, but I hear he's pretty damn good.

Radiohead and Soundgarden. They were both were the pinnacle of 90's grunge (or in Radiohead's case, alternative). I particularly loved Cornell's vocals. They were brilliant.
I wish Radiohead hadn't sold out and Soundgarden still existed, though.

As if Radiohead sold out ;\. Taking the electronica direction with Kid A, Amnesiac and (partly) Hail To The Thief was anything but selling out. Oh and In Rainbows was a fantastic album with barely any weak points.

Mine is definitely Radiohead (for alternative). They are honestly like no band I've ever heard, every album is different, and so on.

As for grunge, probably AIC (the four parts meld very well together).

"Alternative" is a misnomer for a music genre if you ask me, but that's an old issue.

At that time I was listening to a lot of The Tea Party because they had atypical instrumentation, Middle East influences here and there, lots of sitar; just a different sound.

That's how I see it.

I personally liked Alice in Chains, for the guttural feeling of their music, and Rage Against The Machine spoke to my mind, for the subject matter and power of their political arguments.
