Your character is the one that has to do it. Your other characters can't do it for you so don't worry about that. And when the game is over it's over. You can only start a new one.

Actually they were suppost to either already put out a patch or there is one coming out soon with one of the DLCs (For the 360 at least I dont know about PC) that lets you contunie playing the game after you have beaten it. I already have one patch they had put out and I thought that was what it was suppost to before, so get that if you havent already.

There was talk that one of the Brotherhood of Steel DLC packs would extend the main storyline and allow people to continue playing after they'd completed the main quest. I don't know how they really plan on doing that, though.
There are a few PC mods that claim to be able to extend gameplay after you complete the main quest, but they were fairly glitched when I tried them months back. I don't know if they've been improved by now.

When does the game end? I want to continue that main quest, but don't want game over. When should I know to stop? I'm supposed to get into Vault 87 right now.

I don't remember the name of the quest, but it's after you storm the water purifier on the heels of Liberty Prime. You can do that part, but don't enter the Jefferson Memorial building or else you'll have to finish the game.

I wonder how they're going to explain continuity. One of the missions in the upcoming DLC is to help eliminate remaining cells of the Enclave after Project Purity is a success, right? So, will you be taking over as a new character or are they just going to break continuity and just add the missions?

I assume that continue the game after project purity with your character, you'll have to send in Lyons to get radiated to death...that'd make the most sense anyway

They'll probably retcon the ending (either way) so that you never actually died from the radiation in the chamber. Say such as Fawkes fishing you out just in the nick of time.
Or you'll play the rest of the game as a feral ghoul.

According to an interview I read with Bethesda employee(I don't remember where so I won't have a source) they're going to allow the player to continue the main quest after the end of the game by changing the ending of the game. How they will do that will probably remain a mystery until the DLC is released, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has to do with Fawkes saving you or something like that, as Ben said.

I think the Fawkes thing makes the most sense. And, I don't want to have to send Lyons in. I like her.

wouldn't the brotherhood of steel kill Fawkes on sight though? I mean she is a super mutant after all.

No, people tolerate him because he's your companion. You can take him into the Jefferson Memorial and ask him to go and turn off the purifier, but he'll tell you that it's not his destiny and that you have to do it.

I completely forgot you can have Fawkes as a follower, I was a bad boy my first time around so I never got to have Fawkes :( On a side note, I think that you should be able to send in Dog Meat. Dogs are supposed to be largely unaffected by radiation right? :P
