So, the other day, my friend hands me two CDs, one being "The Soft Bulletin" and the other being "Clouds Taste Metallic" by the Flaming Lips, and he urges me to listen to both.

Now, I had heard of both before, and nearly every forum or blog said that the Soft Bulletin was the better album.

Well, I got home and listened to both the entire way through, and I have to say, "Clouds Taste Metallic" is by far my favorite one. It's odd and happy and strange and a bit foreboding at the same time, and it's so much more accessible to the new Flaming Lips fan.

If anyone's listened to either, I'd love to hear your opinions on them, maybe why I'm wrong or if you agree completely with better insight than, "Hyuk, I liked 'em both good!"

The Flaming List is one of my all time favorite bands. Both albums are pretty good, but I find all of their stuff fairly amazing. It's such an acquired taste that I've found a lot of people not interested in that's just so great. I think it might've been Kid_A that got me into them like 81275902 years ago, but I couldn't live without 'em now.

Haha, they're definitely the definition of "acquired taste."

I have to admit, I didn't really know about them until I heard "The W.A.N.D.", but after I heard it I was hooked. I've liked all of their stuff that I've heard, which is rare for me, with any band.

I LOVE The Soft Bulletin so much that I'm scared I won't like the others...I know that sounds stupid. I'll go get them soon though. My favorites are "The Spiderbite Song" and "Race for the Prize". I have At War with the Mystics but I haven't given it a real listen yet.

The whole Yoshimi album is probably my favorite. Do You Realize is a great song, I'm also a big fan of the title song(s). Moreso the first, but both are good.

That's the album I first listened to, and it was great. The songwriting on it was so funny and cool, and I quite enjoyed the title track (but I've recently lost my copy).

And "Race for the Prize" is probably my favorite off of the Soft Bulletin, that entire album is really well done, but it had more of that "acquired taste" kind of sound that I thought was a bit toned down on Clouds Taste Metallic, which I appreciated, being a new fan and all.

Guilty as charged.

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is above and beyond my favorite Flaming Lips album. Clouds Taste Metallic might be at a close second alongside Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell, also followed closely by Soft Bulletin.

If you ever get the chance to see them in concert, I highly recommend it. Giant beach balls, fake blood, camera tricks and audience members dressed up like animals and dancing---one of the more entertaining spectacles I've seen.

Them's my two cents!

I'd like to second that. Yoshimi is perfect in every way. The nuance in sounds and effect and thoughtfulness of the melody make it a true musical masterpiece in my mind. The hiccup is Yoshimi Battle... pt.2. I get it and understand why it's there, but it ain't easy to listen to. ;)

I strongly second this. I've seen them twice, once at Madison Sq. Garden on New Year's Eve and once at a smaller venue for a couple years later. The MSG show may have been the single greatest concert for me yet.
