What the f*ck is this guy's deal, exactly? My Mom was watching Ellen DeGeneris the other day and I was on here, listening and apparently this guy has 23 top 10 hits or some sh*t like that, and then he starts to "singing" his new song to a bunch of middle aged white ladies.
Now, normally that would be expected, except that this guy can't even sing. Like, especially live, I'm sure in the studio they polish it up, but his live singing sounded like Sting with cold or something. I felt like a POW Iraqi insurgent being tortured with sound, and I would have revealed any secrets I had to make it stop, I assure you.
What is up with this guy? He can't even dance, his lyrics are so unimaginitive he makes The Wiggles look like geniuses, I don't get it. His dancing evoked images of Taylor Hicks from American Idol, the old white guy moves, and then the lyrics were just so damn obvious, I'd never heard the song in my life but somehow I knew it already.
I'm not guessing we have any Akon fans in here (hopefully), but this is just killing me, I had to vent.

It's like all mainstream music. A majority of it is terrible.

Yeah... He has a funky voice that the mainstream dug. But I think he uses Auto-tune, which would explain the live performance gaffe (ala Kanye on SNL.)
And he's not a dancer. He sings about love (the pop-sh*t), an exaggerated criminal record, and being an immigrant.
He's also started to fade away. His recent album dropped in like December, and it flopped. Not as bad as Soulja Boy, but he only moved 100K units after the first week. (The earlier album was like 2x Plat and re-released.)
Without Auto-tune, he's definitely better than T-Pain, vocally at least.
I don't listen to Akon straight up, but he gets on hooks for hip-hop songs, and in that role, he's not bad.) Songs from that frame are "Ghetto Gospel" (2Pac), "Soul Survivor" (Young Jeezy), "Dream Big" (Crooked I), and "Never Gonna Get It" (Sean Biggs; also featuring Topic).
I would have to say that he is actually better than T-Pain, vocally.

All albums sales have dropped.
The new fall out boy hasn't even broke 300k yet.
But yeah, I think Akon was actually charged and sued when the threw that kid off stage. Good for him.

At least he has a fresh sound, imo no one sounds like him. But I liked him most in Soul Survivor, that was a good mix with Jeezy. And Smack That is catchy, other than that I never listen to him.

Really? Because all that mainstream "R&B" stuff sounds exactly the same.
His voice is definitely unique, but that's still not saying much.

Well it is his, they just pitch-correct/rape the hell out of it to try and make it sound better.

The two songs I mentioned aren't R&B.

I'm on the verge of saying "So does all your metal," but I'll avoid the flame wars. After all, "YOU MUST NOT KNOW BOUT ME... I'M IRREPLACABLE" (Yes, I f*cked the lyrics up.)
But is his voice kinda fake? Cause I think he started the pitch correction after T-Pain's success.
"Soul Survivor" is mad dope.

Hell, at least I diversify more than most metal heads. I'll listen to any metal that I can understand the lyrics (unlike the scene kids, I hate the screaming crap), but I'll listen to just about anything with the exception of rap, hip hop, and r&b, and emo/screamo. My music catalogue includes the likes of Bob Marley and some other reggae stuff, some techno, Irish/Celtic music, folk music, alot of classic, southern, modern, and hard rock, beethoven, mozart, mostly metal, hardcore punk, neoclassical, country, bluegrass, blues, etc. At least I don't only listen to 1 type of music, which I hope is more than what you can say for yourself, X.
Anyway, yeah, he really does sound like everything else out there in his genre anymore.

Meh. His music is pretty good for parties and clubs. I don't mind some of the melody he adds to some of the newer rap songs either. I don't really like anything he does individually, but he works well with other rappers.

Your opinion sounds like one from a person who only watches MTV...
What exactly is Akon's genre anyways? I bet you can't find someone who sounds like him.
P.S. Your little rant about how much music you listen to didn't really have the slightest to do with what were talking about.

Uh, I bet, if you go back to our Visitor's Messages, I told you what I listen to.
It's hip-hop, Hindi music (Bollywood), Traditional/Spiritual Hindu pieces, RnB, and Reggaeton, in that order.
Any arrogant dick can generalise anybody else's music. Considering that I haven't started to do it, I hope you don't start either. There are a lot of good (and distinct) voices in RnB. You can EASILY differentiate between Chris Brown, T-Pain, Akon, Ne-Yo, and R. Kelly, if you ever listened to any of them.
And there's one other song with Akon that's aight. "I Tried," by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.

Haha, I'm a fan of Minor Threat and Have Heart, and even that gave me a laugh...
I've never liked Akon from the moment I heard him. I remember when I first heard one of his songs on the radio, I thought it was an aAsian dude who got caught up in the African-American culture.

I hated him the moment I saw he used Eric Roberts in a music video of his... Didn't actually hear the song but then again I didn't need too to hate it. After hearing his song"" I hate it more. He has no orginality and nothing that makes him stand out from the crowd. His beats are pretty poor and the lyrics are like nails on a chalk board. Give me Jay Z's Black Album over his crap any day.

Hm... Jay-Z's Black Album... It's aight. I'm just missing the connection to Akon. :D One raps, one sings, and hopefully, it stays like that.

They're both black... Yea that's the best connection I had :(
Still, Akon sucks and I'm glad we can all agree on that point... though he did bring us Lady Ga Ga so I can cut him some slack... not much but some.

This is a thread to complain about Akon, get over it.

Also no idea where you got this crazy idea from. I listen to what I like and do everything in my power to avoid "artists" like Akon but I am forced, on occasion, to listen to that what I hate. Not my falult Akon takes up way to much air time on the "music" channels.

I can say I sort-of like Akon. The pitch of his voice does get to me though, so I take him in small, small doses. I always liked "I Wanna a Fu*k you" with Snoop, good one for the ladies. "Ghetto" is a classic as well. The new single is ok, but definetely is far from great.

1. You're a lady? :P I don't like this one, but trivia: Prior to the Snoop Dogg version (and months before he blew up and hit the mainstream), who was the original rapper in "I Wanna F*ck You?" He got replaced by Snoop because of an arrest he got for Illegal Gun Possession.
2. What's Akon's current single? Is it "I'm So Paid?"

Suburban Reject

Nah, I don't know if he released another single/video after the second one (I'm So Paid). And that's because I don't listen to him unless he's bringing features.
The first part is trivia.
The new single is ok, but definetely is far from great.
This is why I asked. I wasn't sure about what song SS was talking about. And there's a possibility that I might have heard the song if it's "I'm So Paid" or if it has features and I didn't realise it was for his album.

I typically don't mind R&B, but Akon just doesn't do anything for me. After the atrocity that was "Smack That"...good God. The guy can sing okay, but lyrically he's the equivalent of a one legged half brained leper baby.

Wow talk about ironic. One of the ad's at the top of this page for me right now says:
"Do you like Akon?"
Personally I don't mind some of Akon's stuff . After having to listen to a lot of it at work for hours on end you kind of get used to it, even start liking it.
