View Full Version : Songs that sound alike (ripoffs or not)

Not sure if one of these topics have been made (ever, recently, whatever) but someone had me listen to a relatively recent Saliva song, and wow, they've fallen pretty fast... "Black Sheep" is a complete ripoff of "Animals" by Nickelback (a song and band I dislike).

This got me thinking of all the songs that sound "eerily alike", even if they aren't ripoffs per se.

I believe Bullet For My Valentine's "Scream, Aim, Fire" took a part of a song by Trivium or another band and used it...

Anyway, what songs have you heard that "blatantly borrowed" pieces or even lyrics from other songs?

Viva La Vida by Cold Play sounds a lot like J'en Ai Marre by Alizée, someone even took the liberty of making a video! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mv6OogsLsAY)

Also there are many songs (none of which come to mind now :P) that share very similar intros or riffs when it comes to guitars I think, but that's just the opinion of my inartistic, tone deaf ears.

For any metal fans there are like 30 editions of metal that sounds like other metal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adukrwHY09s)

It's actually really interesting to hear. I figured out a few on my own, but that guy has a ton of time on his hands...

As for lyrics Dragonforce admits that HammerFall is a huge influence of theirs and HammerFall has a line "On Wings of Glory we will carry on" in Legacy Of Kings and Dragonforce uses that same line on one of their songs (Fury Of The Storm I think but I'm not positive)

I used to listen to some emo music in 2003-2004 and I remember Brand New and Taking Back Sunday both used the lines, "Is that what you call tact? You're as subtle as a brick in the small of the back. So let's end this call and end this conversation." I can't remember the songs, but that stuff was always interesting to me...

Of course, nothing compares to Vanilla Ice ripping off Under Pressure. :)

Panic at the Disco's Nine in the Afternoon and ELO's Mr. Blue Sky, first one that springs to mind because I was just screaming about it in the car a few minutes ago.

I seem to recall that was deliberate, because they used to be friends but fell out over a girl... one was written in response to the other.

I've always thought that Doves' Pounding is essentially a terrible version of the Pumpkins' Stand Inside Your Love...

Nickelback are so terrible that they rip themselves off.

Stratovarius managed to rip-off a good song, and make it suck.

Just the beginning of Divide-Disturbed (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zY59s-FKjdM) and State of the Union-Rise Against (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im1tmCFpVWs) both are really good bands imo.

Staind = Right Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbMqi08g3YA)

Staind = Believe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMZF1v0Y7DY)

These songs follow the same damn structure and sound right down to the guitar picking. Disgraceful.

Blitzkrieg Bop by the Ramones and Last Caress by the Misfits have an identical riff played in the same style and tempo. Can't remember which song was first.

You're exactly at the two week mark, and this thread still has the potential for...well...potential, so I'll let it slide, and help continue.

I thought the guitar riffs in Rhianna's "Shut Up And Drive" sounded very similar to Orgy's cover of "Blue Monday."

I've heard a million times over that Dani California (RHCP) sounds like some Tom Petty Song (Last Dance?), but I don't hear it.

I remember listening to both songs a while ago, Kid_A, and in all honesty I only really found the guitar melody to be somewhat similar.

I've watched about 20 volumes of it. It's fantastic.

God, it seems Iron Maiden are the biggest metal thieves ever! Or Megadeth.

ugh...my quote is jacked up.

I thought the guitar riffs in Rhianna's "Shut Up And Drive" sounded very similar to Orgy's cover of "Blue Monday."

My wife says the same thing, and listening to both songs, I can see the resemblance, although I think the Rhianna song is more staccato than the Orgy song.

That being said, they're both really catchy and can be enjoyable. I blame her for me getting me to listen to the Rhianna song though...

I've heard a million times over that Dani California (RHCP) sounds like some Tom Petty Song (Last Dance?), but I don't hear it.

It's "Mary Jane's Last Dance" by Tom Petty, and I mean...honestly if you heard the intro guitar lines only, you'd be hard pressed to know which was which instantly.

However, the choruses of both songs are very dissimilar to one another. I can't picture in my mind how the instruments of the Tom Petty song chorus sound, but I can hear the singing in my mind, and it's nothing like the Chill Peppers'.

Also, anyone who cares to hear something a little fun, if not disquieting, should listen to a song that was put together by a guy named Mikey Smith, who once parodied Metallica's Saint Anger I believe...

It's called Rip Off These Songs (http://beemp3.com/download.php?file=380561&song=The+Big+Rip-Off) and it's a mashup of Linkin Park's "From The Inside" and Dream Theater's "These Walls". It's been pitch-altered, and sped up, and...well, I don't think the case is really made that Dream Theater ripped off Linkin Park, but it's interesting to hear anyway!

...Mod-to-Mod sidenote, I believe that link should be okay, because I don't believe this guy sold this song at any point, pretty sure it was just made for fun. If you don't like it, I'd be happy to remove it.

Blink 182 used the same chord progression in almost all of their songs. Linkin Park are also notorious for writing one song and then rehashing it over and over.

I just seen the video for Miley Cyrus's new single Fly On The Wall, and oddly enough it sounds a lot like Rock Lobster! :chuckle:

Blink 182 used the same chord progression in almost all of their songs.

Three-chord (pseudo)-punk bands tend to do that. Green Day have made a career out of three chord songs.

Linkin Park are also notorious for writing one song and then rehashing it over and over.

You'd have to not be a fan of them to actually say that.

Hybrid Theory had a lot of different sounding material, as did Minutes to Midnight.

Meteora? Well, there was a lot more samey-ness going on there. The lyrical content was all very similar, and some of the songs even sounded similar. So...yeah.

You're not completely off base I guess, but you're not exactly correct either.
