Top 3 Bands/Artists of '08:
Metallica (favorite band :D), Avantasia(The Scarecrow is probably one of my all time favorite albums), and Alice Cooper (his album wasn't anything great, but he put on a great show when I saw him)

Top 5 Favorite Tracks of '08:
1. Suicide & Redemption (Metallica)
2. From The Fading Screams (Borealis)
3. The Scarecrow (Avantasia)
4. Henchmen Ride (Testament)
5. Warriors Of Time (Black Tide)

Favorite Single of '08:
All Nightmare Long (Metallica). When I first heard this song I was amazed. I really wasn't expecting something this great from Metallica since their last few albums were pretty lame.

Favorite Album of '08:
Death Magnetic (Metallica). Again I wasn't expecting such a great album.

Favorite New Artist/Band of '08:
Borealis. I'm not sure how new they are, but I think their album came out this year, and I can tell you that they are gonna make it big. It's as great as any power metal album lately.

Best Live Performance/Favorite Concert of '08:
I haven't been to a ton, but Alice Cooper put on a hell of a show again. He beats out Edguy/Borealis & Slipknot/Dragonforce/Black Tide

Greatest Comeback/Improvement in '08:
Metallica. St. Anger was terrible and Death Magnetic is (imo) a Metal Masterpiece, especially since so many of those 80's bands are burning out (up until this year's resurgance).

Most Underrated/Overrated Bands/Singers of '08:
Kind of hard to pick anything specific so I'll leave this blank...

Most Anticipated Releases of '09:
HammerFall - No Sacrifice, No Victory. HammerFall are my second favorite band and I'm really looking forward to this release, even though it won't be as great as their older stuff.

Added Category:Most disappointing release of '08:
Definitaely Ultra Beatdown by Dragonforce. Their first 3 albums are stellar, but it's fairly easy to see they've been going downhill lately and this album is the first one I didn't like. Alice Cooper is a close second, but his album is still an imrprovement (vocally) over Dirty Diamonds and The Eyes Of Alice Cooper.

Ok, considering a majority of the bands (actually pretty much all of them) haven't released anything in a while, I'm just going to answer where I can.

Best Live Performance/Favorite Concert of '08
Saw Billy Joel in late November, so I'll go with that. The Mars Volta made their show 18+, which sucked, but whatever.

Meh, I'm finished.

Favorite Album of '08
I bought several albums this year, although only two were actually released this year, so the title goes to The Bedlam in Goliath by The Mars Volta.

Favorite Single of '08
Suppose I'll go with Coldplay's Viva La Vida, as we (years 10-12) got to perform that song live at Presentation Night and it was absolutely fantastic, not to mention I quite liked it.

Top 3 Bands/Artists of '08: Radiohead (always), The Killers (really got into them this year), Kanye West (same with him)

Favorite Album of '08: I would go with In Rainbows, but I've been hitting that up since '07, so I'll go with Day & Age.

Favorite New Artist/Band of '08: MGMT is pretty awesome thanks.

Best Live Performance/Favorite Concert of '08: RADIOHEAD ON MAY 9TH. THAT WAS AWESOME.

Greatest Comeback/Improvement in '08: David Byrne and Brian Eno's record Everything That Happens Will Happen Today.

Most Underrated/Overrated Bands/Singers of '08: Overrated: Britney Spears' comeback.

Most Anticipated Releases of '09: Tonight: Franz Ferdinand

WHOO, to flip the script on y'all, here's some hip-hop:

Top 3 Bands/Artists of '08: Immortal Technique (Released the 3rd World, got on a song with Ill Bill, began touring... He's back.), Crooked I (Completed his Hip-Hop Weekly, dropped two mixtapes, formed Slaughterhouse, got on a bunch of features, and generally killed it.), Nas (Eh, I'll toss y'all a mainstream cat for kicks. Stirred up controversy with the original title of the album, dropped the album and a mixtape, and hit some features.)

Shouts out to DJ Green Lantern for being damn near everywhere, too.

Top 5 Favorite Tracks of '08: "The Third World," - Immortal Technique, "War is My Destiny" - Ill Bill ft. Immortal Technique and Max Cavalera, "How We Rock," - Termanology ft. Bun B, "Trail of Lies" - Jedi Mind Tricks, and "Onslaught" - Slaughterhouse (Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Royce da 5'9", and Crooked I).

Favorite Single of '08: "The Third World," - Immortal Technique

Favorite Album of '08: The Third World, Immortal Technique

Favorite New Artist/Band of '08: Nobody in hip-hop is ever as new as ya think they are, but for me, three young cats who deserve respect are Cory Gunz, Termanology, and Hasan Salaam

Greate st Comeback/Improvement in '08: Immortal Technique (JoeIt's been 5 years since Revolutionary Vol. 2)

Most Underrated/Overrated Bands/Singers of '08: Underrated- Any underground rapper for the most part.

Overrated (I'll cut down my list CONSIDERABLY)- Lil Wayne (Throw Lollipop in the trash and he woulda just hit Plat; Goes to show how hideous hip-hop can get these days, as that was the worst song on the album.), Kanye West (He can't actually sing, people...), Ron Brownz (How do you come into the game with the legendary Big L, produce "Ether" (Yes, THAT "Ether"), and then jock T-Pain's dick on some bullsh*t?), Jim Jones (Who told you you could spit; they were f*ckin kidding.), 50 Cent (He charted. What the f*ck?), Soulja Boy (YAHH TRICK YAHH!!! oh wait...)

Most Anticipated Releases of '09: Detox, Dr. Dre; Only Built For Cuban Linx II, Raekwon; Kiss My Ass/Last Kiss, Jadakiss; B.O.S.S., Crooked I (AND IT'LL BE FREE TOO); Blueprint 3, Jay-Z; Venom, Chamillionaire.

1) Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians - The Sword
2) Aberinkula - The Mars Volta
3) The Day that Never Comes - Metallica
4) Black River - The Sword
5) Consoler of The Lonely - The Rancontuers

Besides a few exceptions this year really sucked for new releases. Old bands doing stuff and reuniting is cool, but I remain unimpressed by most of the new bands of this decade and they're dry, worthless pop.

The they're should be their*

Furthermore. Except for Parachutes I loathe Coldplay; not only are they convicted plaguerist but they took the great formula Radiohead managed to put together and sucked it like a parasite till it was dry. Emulating and Emulating like the slur of bands that arose after the grunge phenom.

Powerslave

Top 3 Bands/Artists of '08:
1) Blaze Bayley. in 2006, it looked like he was sunk. he had no band and no money. However, his new wife became his manager, and got him going forward. he now has a great band behind him, he released what was for me the album of the year, and he has put on some brilliant live shows too. It's just a shame that his wife won't be able to enjoy any of the success she helped create, as she passed away in September after suffering a massive brain haemorrage.

2) Metallica

3) Tobias Sammet

Top 10 Favorite Tracks of '08:
1) Blaze Bayley - Smile Back at Death
2) Metallica - The Day That Never Comes
3) Firewind - Into the Fire
4) Metallica - That Was Just Your Life
5) Avantasia - Lost in Space
6) Blaze Bayley - The Man Who Would Not Die
7) Avantasia - The Scarecrow
8) Dragonforce - Heroes of Our Time
9) Firewind - Mercenary Man
10) Testament - More Than Meets The Eye

Favorite Single of '08:
Metallica - The Day That Never Comes

Favorite Albums of '08:
1) Blaze Bayley - The Man Who Would Not Die
2) Metallica - Death Magnetic
3) Firewind - The Premonition
4) Avantasia - The Scarecrow
5) Testament - The Formation of Damnation

Favorite New Artist/Band of '08:
Alestorm i suppose. their debut album Captain Morgan's Revenge is one of the most fun albums in my collection. sure, they have to go down as a novelty band, but their music is damn good.

Best Live Performance/Favorite Concerts of '08:
1. Iron Maiden, Lisbon. basically the same gig as the Twickenham one i also went to, but with added Slayer. got flown out on Ed Force One by Bruce Dickinson as well, which was more than a little cool.

2. Queensryche, Wolverhampton Civic Hall. it was a dream come true to finally see the full Mindcrime show, the first album remains one of my all time favourites. the stage show was jaw dropping, superbly choreographed.

3. Metallica, the London o2 Arena. it's not often you get to see any band for £5, especially one of the biggest bands at one of the biggest arenas in the country. they were very good, and the setlist was full of nice suprises.

4. Bloodstock Festival. would have been higher on this list if i'd wanted to see any of the headliners. in particular, i'd been looking forward to Iced Earth, Helloween and Primal Fear, and they were all excellent. Alestorm, Soilwork, Overkill and Evile also provided great entertainment in their slots.

5. Kamelot, Wolverhampton Wulfrun. had always been more of a casual fan of these before the gig, but that changed after seeing them. everything worked so well, and the setlist couldn't really have been bettered. it's a shame that the sound guy was asleep for the first 3 songs though. Firewind's top notch support put the cherry on the cake.

Greatest Comeback/Improvement in '08:
i've already mentioned Blaze earlier, so i'll say Metallica. i don't think many people expected their new album to offer anything much in the way of quality. but it did, in spades. their live performances even seem to have gotten better.

Most Anticipated Releases of '09:
there's quite a lot to look forward to:
Alestorm, Anthrax, Dream Theater, Hammerfall, Kreator, Megadeth, Paradise Lost, Primal Fear, Slayer and hopefully Savage Circus.

Top 5 Live Albums of 2008:
1) Dream Theater - Chaos in Motion
2) Paradise Lost - The Anatomy of Melancholy
3) Metallica - Rock Am Ring (yeah, i know this isn't a "release" so to speak, but it is official, and it's damn good)
4) Gamma Ray - Hell Yeah.....
5) Firewind - Live Premonition

Biggest Letdown of 2008
this is a tie between Judas Priest and Iced Earth. given that i'm a big fan of both fans, and that i like concept albums, i'm not entirely sure how they managed to get their albums so wrong. Nostradamus was so bloated with useless filler tracks that it was more or less ruined. The Crucible of Man was decent, but not nearly as good as they can do. it was far too bland for a start.

I might have to think about this for a bit, the only 2008 album I can recall buying right now is Naturkraft by Horn, and it would be quite dull if that won everything.

On the whole 'adding unnecessary categories' thing though:

Best Music Video of 2008
Shaped by Fate ~ They Told Me You Were Dead. It just doesn't get any cooler than this. No competition.

December 23rd, 2008, 01:59 PM
Top 3 Bands/Artists of '08:
Cynic: They make an album 15 years after their last masterpiece. And that album is probably the best album of this year.

That is really the only band that blew me away. Other bands just played what I expected, though some were good albums like Opeth's Watershed.

Top 5 Favorite Tracks of '08:

King of Those Who Know - Cynic
The Space For This - Cynic
Goliath - The Mars Volta
Hessian Peel - Opeth
Mosaic Devours - Snoras

Yeah, Cynic pretty much owned this year. I could have put the whole album on that list.

Favorite Album of '08:
I will rank them:

[LIST=1]
Traced in Air - Cynic
Shadows of the Sun - Ulver
Eternal Kingdom - Cult of Luna
Bearing and Distance - Ghostlimb
Watershed - Opeth

Greatest Comeback/Improvement in '08:
Cynic's new album.

Most Anticipated Releases of '09:
I am Chipmunk - Chipmunk
Ritual of Names - Circle Takes the Square
The Ecstatic - Mos Def
A new Cool Kids album
A new Isis album
LupE.N.D. - Lupe Fiasco
Maybe, maybe, maybe a My Bloody Valentine album
A new Porcupine Tree album
A new Red Sparrowes album
A new Rx Bandits album

Next year should be good if all of this does come out.

Oh and the biggest let down of this year is Draconian's Turning Seasons Within. That album was horrible and they were a good doom metal band.

Top 3 Bands/Artists of '08:

1. Rihanna - Now I'm not the hugest fan, but it certainly was a good year for her overall. Seemed she had constant airplay and enough new material to stay on top of the game.

2. Lil Wayne - So The Carter 3 was nothing special IMO, but this guy kept it hot through the mixtapes and guest spots like on Let It Rock and My Life.

3. Avenged Sevenfold - One of my favorites deserves some regonition, with the release of a B-Sides album and new DVD. Not to mention they killed it on tour this year.

Top 5 Favorite Tracks of '08:

1. Now You're Gone - Basshunter
2. Going Wrong - Armin Van Buuren
3. T.I. - Whatever You Like
4. Shogun - Trivium
5. Sex On Fire - Kings of Leon

Favorite Single of '08:

Just Dance - Lady Gaga - Mainly because it reminds me of the summer. B!tches be wildin to this one. :chuckle:

Favorite Album of '08:

Shogun:Trivium - After The Crusade I had lost a little respect for them. But with this album I feel they have finally reached the peak of their sound. Fresh riffs, deep lyrics, overall everything has improved here.

Favorite New Artist/Band of '08:

Lights - The singer, Valerie, is just simply stunning, gorgeous, and angelic sounding. I got to meet her at a show and I fell even more in love with her. Her musics very innovative and emotionally charged. And she's Canadian!

Best Live Performance/Favorite Concert of '08:

Avenged Sevenfold at The Sound Academy, Toronto. All hit and no miss show here. I even got pulled on stage by Syn. They bring out some of the best crowds as well I must say.

Greatest Comeback/Improvement in '08:

I racked my brain here on this one and decided to just go with The Game. His last album LAX dropped and it was way better than his last go at er with The Docs Advocate. Instant classic written all over this one. He will be missed. Although I have a feeling he'll be back soon enough with somethin new.

Most Anticipated Releases of '09:

Before I Self Destruct - 50 Cent (lets hope takes us back to his classic sound here)
B.O.M.B. -Busta Rhymes
Last Kiss -Jadakiss
Untitled - Kiss is also comin out with a new album I heard Gene saying on an interview.

Best Live Performance/Favorite Concerts of '08:
1. Iron Maiden, Lisbon. basically the same gig as the Twickenham one i also went to, but with added Slayer. got flown out on Ed Force One by Bruce Dickinson as well, which was more than a little cool.

Heh, I was at that one too Powerslave! And did get to chat with one of those who flew with the band right before their set about the setlist of the show he'd attended the day before or so. Wonder if t'was you! :D

Top 3 Bands/Artists of '08:

1. Nine Inch Nails - Discovered them with The Slip coming out...Just amazing intensity to their songs, kind of the same feeling I get from Tool, only more groovy.
2. Metallica - Always stood by the band, even with St. Anger, even if it was their worst album so far...But DM is just awesome, back to their roots stuff.
3. Radiohead - Still enjoying In Rainbows. What an awesome album it is.

Favorite Single of '08:

Nine Inch Nails - Discipline - The first song I heard by them...Just blew me away. Lots of depth to everything in this song.

Favorite Album of '08:

Metallica - Death Magnetic - It really warmed my heart to see these guys back in proper form. DM is an awesome album that in my mind, at least, ranks along the Black Album, if not higher even.

Best Live Performance/Favorite Concert of '08:

Iron Maiden, Lisbon. Just the best live show I've ever attended. I mean, I'd heard Maiden were great live, but...Is Bruce really as old as he is? He looked like a friggin' 10 year old jumping around on stage.

Greatest Comeback/Improvement in '08:

Metallica (Explained above)

Most Anticipated Releases of '09:

Iron Maiden's 15th album. Can't wait, as usual, hehe.

Greatest Comeback/Improvement in '08:
Metallica

Most Underrated/Overrated Bands/Singers of '08:

Completely, utterly, and totally overrated- Nickleback, Fallout Boy, MCR, and any other crap like that. Seriously, how did any of them ever get famous? Everything they've put out is the same exact song in a nutshell. This also goes for any mainstream radio rap and hip hop. I'm actually starting to agree with Suburban Reject on this one, that the underground, politcally motivated stuff that actually has a message other than "I f*ck hundreds of girls and my ride is flashy" can be rather thought provoking. I still wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it, but I can tolerate the stuff that he likes FAR more than the stuff that's on the radio.

Underrated- Firewind. These guys are just the pure embodiment of the word EPIC, and they haven't gotten anywhere near as much attention as they should have, especially considering that they've been around for almost a decade.
