I've been toying with this idea for a while now, and since there's been a lull lately, now seems to be the time to introduce it. Let's just hope it goes somewhere.
The name of the game is Musical Six Degrees of Separation.
You can name a song, a band, a band member, or an album. (I'll consider accepting concert venues if there's a difficulty with certain topics.)
Example:
Led Zeppelin
The Yardbirds. Jimmy page was involved in the project, and the band pretty much evolved into Led Zeppelin.
(next post)
The Yardbirds
Eric Clapton. Member of the band.
(next post)
Eric Clapton
Cream. Clapton's 60's project.
(next post)
Cream
Covered Rollin' & Tumblin, a Muddy Waters tune.
(next post)
Muddy Waters
The Rolling Stones named themselves after his song, "Rollin' Stone."
I realize this wasn't a great example, but hopefully you get the idea.
So, let's start off where I left off, I guess.
The Rolling Stones.

The Byrds 12-string Rickenbacker-laden sound was a huge inspiration on many artists, most noteably George Harrison and Tom Petty, whose albums with "The Heartbreakers" featured similar guitar textures abound.

Q-Tip the rapper is possibly more famous than Q-Tip, the cotton swap, as a google search brings up the former before it does the latter. Heh.
Q-Tip the rapper is best known for being a member of the group A Tribe Called Quest.

A Tribe Called Quest, despite numerous lucrative deal offers in their early days, wound up signing with Jive Records, at the time a small independent label specializing in rap artists. However, later in the life of the label, it wound up being the leaders in the pop resurgence of the 90's, bringing artists such as Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys to the scene. (I use the term "music" loosely in this circumstance)

The Backstreet Boys were founded by boy band mogul Lou Pearlman who also found other groups like O-Town, LFO and N*SYNC.

The only member of N*Sync to have a profitable solo career after the fact was Justin Timberlake, and while I'm not a fan, I must admit that he is on ONE song I really like... "Where Is The Love?" by the Black-Eyed Peas.

The Beatles, much like this thread, were victims of minimodding. Except theirs was by Yoko Ono. Yoko Ono was involved in the production of The Beatles: Rock Band.

Freezepop made a song dedicated to the webcomic Achewood, Here Comes a Special Boy. MC Frontalot not only wrote the "official" theme song for Achewood, Livin' on the Corner of Dude and Catastrophe, but that song is also featured DLC for Rock Band.
