View Full Version : What to call the flourishes at the end of pop songs?

Towards the end of most pop songs, the singer will start doing his/her own thing over the other vocals, does anybody know if there's a technical term for that? You know, when they're trying to show emotion and improvising their own "oooOOooOOoo" and stuff like that instead of the regular verse/chorus.
For example in Nsync's Bye Bye Bye (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JoJqID-wJY#t=3m10s) that dude just starts yelling BYE BYE BABY around 3:12.
Or like Chris Brown and Jordin Sparks do for pretty much the entire length of No Air. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxBdQs10FEI) They start doing it less than halfway through the song. Somebody got lazy writing those lyrics.
Anybody know a concise name for that?

I know what you mean, it always comes with the key change at the last chorus repitition. Usually beginning with a big "Ayyyyyyyyy" right on the key change, followed by the flourishes you mention. I would call it "vocal improvisation" if it didn't give the "artists" involved too much credit.
Edit: it could be considered part of the "truck driver's gear change" (http://www.gearchange.org/index.asp) method of stretching out a limited idea to fill out a 3-minute pop song.

Thanks guys, not a definitive answer, but hey better than "flourishes at the end of pop songs" so I'll take it.

Also, thanks for introducing me to that, that's hilarious. It's done well sometimes, like when it's only used for the last chorus. Most of the examples on that site are pretty horrible though haha. :D

What about a crescendo? While not altogether relevant I really just wanted to say that so I could bring "Fake Plastic Trees" into the topic. Man, what a good song that is.

I know this is a little old, but a Crescendo isn't really....what you're talking about. A crescendo can occur anywhere in a song, as it's just a musical term written on sheet music to tell the musician to get louder.
I'd call it a vamp.
