So I had my wisdom teeth taken out this past July and the doctor told me I could listen to music while the procedure was going on. I wasn't put all the way under like some people are just put into that twilight stage. Well anyways I spent the week before surgery trying to figure out what I wanted to listen to during the procedure. After debating over several things like Porcupine Tree, Several Psytrance bands like Infected Mushroom and Juno Reactor I came to the conclusion that Coldplay's new CD would be a good one to listen to while I was under the blanket of twilight. So I get into the chair they tip me back he sticks in the IV and 5 seconds later asks me if I can feel anything? I said no I feel just normal then I hit my play button on my iPod and it starts....apparently at the very beginning when Life In Technicolor was playing and they hadn't started working I said, "Is this what it feels like to die?" other than that the music from what I can remember sounded more than amazing to me. So the point of this thread is those of you who have had this done what did you choose to listen to? If you didn't listen to anything what would you have listened to? Those who haven't had it done at all yet what are you going to listen to?

When I got my wisdom teeth out they put me under. I started counting back from 100 and I think I didn't even hit 85 before I was out, so the prospect of listening to music during said procedure would have been pointless for me.

If I were in the situation, I think something psychadelic would be interesting, considering the effects of the anaesthetic.

Immortal Technique. :D

I think the only time I choose anyone else is in the morning, where I'd like Hindu spiritual, or just at whim (when I have my Ipod on shuffle.)

I've done this a few times. Nothing amazing happened. It depends on what you're given though; few years back when I was 11 they gave me some f*cked up sh*t. I was (in my mind) literally "surfing through static with a surfboard" at one point. It honestly sucked and was pretty nightmarish. :-\ Oh, and the f*cking spinning wouldn't stop for hours. That was the last time they used whatever it was they gave me. Yeah.

It all depends on what you're given. With gas, you basically just "white out" within seconds and you're out cold.

I would choose [insert my favourite band here] because [qualities of said band] would sound good during anesthesia.

It wasn't for wisdom teeth, but some operation. But I was younger and I had Kill'em All in my CD player, it was fun.

I'd probably listen to Dave Matthews Band. You know, something a mellow but also upbeat with a ton of vibe. I doubt this will ever happen for me when it comes to wisdom teeth as I've had mine for three+ years, and doubt they'll ever get pulled. Would be nice to actually listen to music at the dentist office, though. My dentist seems cool enough to probably let me do it, but I haven't seen that bloke in a few years. Lol.

I'd go for something by Tool, maybe 10,000 Days or Vicarious. Sometimes their songs already give me weird experiences.

I'd go with the Shins, probably Wincing the night away. That would be interesting to say the least.

I'd see how far I could get into "The Wall" before going blank.

I'm not sure what they gave me h said it was in the benzodiazepine family which is what Xanax is, I don't know what it was but like I said it was IVed into me. I think listening to metal would be disturbing under the influence of something like that. The whole point is to calm yourself which is why it came down to In Rainbows or Viva La Via o Death and All His Friends for me.

I can imagine some good ole King Diamond or Motorhead messing with one's psyche, causing them to be afraid to go to the dentist, or even sleepfor that matter, without some psychological help. It's plausible.

Yeah, music will calm you. It doesn't really sound any different, which I think is what most people who haven't tried it yet are thinking it would do. It's just you're so relaxed while listening to it. I'm not exactly sure what it was I was given but I know it was a c*cktail of sorts. Heh, I remember they said I was allergic to morphine (slight rash on my arm) so I guess that was a part of it. Very relaxing, the point where you're hitting on the nurses and everything else regrettable.

Also some of that sh*t can make you sick afterwards; I had major headaches after the gas.

Comfortably Numb.

Or ask if they could put "The Wall" on the TV while you're getting them pulled (the 30 minute animated movie, not the album).

Also, anything by:

Caspian, Joy Wants Eternity, American Football, His Hideous Heart, Radiohead, or Mogwai

They numbed my face like crazy, the doctor said he doubled all the numbing I remember it feeling like there were so many pokes from the needles. I didn't say anything the whole time except at the beginning when i kind of thought out loud and said "Is this what it feels like to die?" Yeah the music isn't going to sound any different obviously but when you're in a relaxed state like that it kind of throws you into that euphoric sunny day kind of feeling. That's why I'd suggest listening to something "relaxing" not like some crazy metal shred fest that would probably just raise your blood pressure during the surgery.

I liked the suggestions of The Shins, Radiohead, Coldplay, and Explosions in the Sky. I'll add Bear vs Shark, Rush, and Modest Mouse.

Radiohead and Muse. I reckon "Hysteria" would be the coolest thing ever while under. And it fits pretty neatly too.

Explosions in the SkyMan, I thought my post was generic enough, maybe it should have just been [insert my favourite band here].

I could go for psychedelic music. Probably some Pink Floyd from their earlier days.

I'd listen to Kaddisfly's Buy Our Intention; We'll Buy You a Unicorn album . . . but I had a similar experience when I accidentally OD'ed on oxycodone (sp?) and listened to Sgt. Pepper's.

Everyone is saying all these psychedelic bands but the gas just relaxes you. It doesn't trip you out or make you hallucinate.

When I got my root canal, and with all of my dental procedures, I've gone under with the NO2 and most of the time they either had Cartoon Network or Animal Planet on TV that I was watching as the procedure happened from time to time, as nobody told me I could bring music.

All I know is that I'd of liked to be listening to some Jethro Tull.

I go with In The Air Tonight by Genesis. That would be cool.

haha, call me an odd child, but metal can calm me at times. My iPod is dominated by metal/rock.
But I can understand what you mean. Although, If I was trippin out like that, I'd probably listen to some Nine Inch Nails, or Blaqk Audio. I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled in a month, too. ButI I'm gonna be unconscious during the whole thing, so.... yeah.

I don't think that's odd, because it's the same for me. Some metal can relax me, all depends where i am and what state of mind i'm in.

Fortunately, I don't need to get my wisdom teeth out.

I listened to Underoath's Define the Great Line when I got some sort of brain scan thingy.
