Megadeth vs. Metallica- who's better, in your opinion? Undoubtedly Metallica are more popular than Megadeth, but surely you can't deny that Dave Mustaine could shred circles around Kirk Hammet and James Hetfield anyday of the week and his songwriting does normally tend to be tighter and better put together.
In your opinion, who do you like better, and why? When it comes down to it, I think I'm going to go with Metallica, because as a band, they're better than Megadeth, but if we were talking about individual musicians, I'd go with Megadeth. The reason why I think Megadeth aren't as popular as Metallica is because they aren't as "radio friendly", and therefore haven't gotten the same amount of exposure as Metallica. Let's also not forget the fact that almost every metal band out there that came out after them cites them as one of their main influences.

Metallica. I'm not a fan or Megadeth's lead singer, so it turns me off.

Exactly my thoughts.
Metallica's songwriting and singing is much better, but outside of that, Megadeth wins (Guitars, Bassist other than Cliff, Drumming ect), but to me the most important things I look for in a band are songwriting and singing so Metallica wins by far.
Edit: I didn't see the option for Slayer...Still sticking with Metallica but:
Metallica>Slayer>(Anthrax)>Megadeth

They're both really corny.
But I like some of Metallica's older stuff.

Neither.
I'll second that. I'll take Anthrax any day over either of those bands. I can't handle Hammets' wah abuse and Mustaine's voice ruins everything.

Metallica as I've heard a few songs of theirs (Nothing Else Matters and The Unforgiven) that seem more mellow than the shred fests of Megadeath. I've not heard any songs from the other Big 4 so I can't really compare. I'm not a metal fan, very much.

I personally can't stand Metallica, Megadeth, or the entire genre of metal, really. I mean, I'm a fan of some Iron Maiden, but that's just about it for me.

None of the above.
And I think the Madden soundtrack has given me an exposure to both.

Metallica and Megadeth have both been in Madden?

Old metallica is better by far. Newer metallica is borderline. Some new metallica songs really don't cut it for me.
The instruments just sound weird to me, though I am starting to like some of the vocals.

Maybe not Metallica, but I think Megadeath has. Regardless, I'm sure I've heard both groups.

I've shamelessly bought every Madden since Madden 2001 for the N64 and I can say for a fact that neither Metallica nor Megadeth have been in any.

I was gonna say I didn't think they would have been in any of them as they only put sh*t in the soundtracks for the madden games.

I don't like Metallica's really early stuff, Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning, sans a few songs, where as MegaDeth's early stuff isn't too bad at all, except for the fact I don't like "Mechanix". The real clincher here for me is that Metallica penned the album "... And Justice for All" and that right there stands above most albums I've ever heard, even the mighty "Seasons in the Abyss".
Metallica gets my vote in this simply because of that fact, and I enjoyed "Master of Puppets" and The Black Album thoroughly as well, the Black Album songs such as "Sad but True", "Don't Tread On Me", of course "Enter Sandman", "Nothing Else Matters", and "Unforgiven" were all huge hits during my early childhood that make me pretty nostalgic.
MegaDeth's "Angry Again" is the only song that really does the same thing for me as those songs do, so it's pretty academic.

Slayer kneel down, tense up, capitulate, then spew forth a volley of dense, dank excrement over the both of them.

Actually, I can. Sure, Mustaine is a more accomplished guitarist than Kirk Hammet, but in my opinion Hetfield is the best rhythm guitarist in the world currently, and Mustaine can't match him in that respect. The latter can solo very well, but Hetfield has some stuff like Nothing Else Matters.
I also disagree that Mustaine cannot sing - I don't know why everyone says that, I think he fits the music really well and is fairly unique.
For the record, I voted Metallica. But Megadeth are still great.

Uh, well, if Max Cavalera weren't alive, that might be a true statement.

Max Cavalera?... Why do I know the name?
That dude's gutteral sh*t is tight. He got on a song with Ill Bill and Immortal Technique, "War is My Destiny." It is sick.

It's not whether he can sing or not, it's how he sings that gets annoying after a while.

I've never been a big fan of Metallica-aah! I choose Slayer, they are far more entertaining. Maybe not as talented mind you, but I just got sick of Metallica faster than any other band. They are just well past their prime.

Metallica has two good decades to Megadeth's one. Death Magnetic is mild (I don't mind the production unlike everyone and their mother) but the production on St. Anger just drags them down in this current decade so damn much. Not to mention Metallica expanded their walls of sonic unlike Megadeth where the songs all equivilate to a couple solos that are nothing but triplets up and down the neck of the guitar. Fun to play on Rockband but not exactly a godsend to the ear all the time. I do find it cool that Megadeth did a cover of "I Aint Superstitious", and it's probably better than anything on Garage Inc. but Metallica still wrote a lot of better songs, including the one in my sig. My vote should be obvious.

my view is the complete opposite of this. i'd say Slayer were definitely more talented that Metallica (in terms of musicianship anyway) but i'd take Metallica every time.

I don't know about that. I mean Jeff Hanneman is definately a lot better lead player than Kirk, and Dave Lombardo is better than Lars, but as a Bassist Cliff > Tom and I've never been fond of Kerry's solos (they're all whammy bar, whereas Jeff's are all shred) and James is clearly the best rhythm player (out of the 4 guitarists). The vocals are a matter of preference but as an actual singer I think James is more talented. Slayer are no doubt very talented but I think Kerry King brings them down a bit.
Still Metallica will always be better song writers :D
