I'm just now listening to "On the Turning Away" and realized that it's probably my favorite song of theirs. Although The Division Bell is my favorite album. And I was wondering what anyone else's favorite song/album by them is.

Ooh dang, where to begin? My favorite album is Wish You Were Here, which overtook Animals over the summer. Though the simpler sound of Meddle, which I only recently acquired, is giving WYWH a run for its money.

Songs:
Time The solo makes this song for me, but I love the lyrics, too.
Have a Cigar Love the lyrics and the crazy phased-out guitar sounds and keyboard interaction throughout.
Any Colour You Like Yep, the delayed keys are awesome.
Mother Sweet mellow vibe, and once again, the solo drives it home.
Run Like Hell I really like the guitar parts throughout this song and the "chant" style vocals.

On a slightly off-topic note, is anyone seeing The Australian Pink Floyd Show (www.aussiefloyd.com)? I saw them last week and oh my gosh, their show was perfect. I've never seen the real Floyd but I would wager that these guys have got it down. They played The Wall, front to back, complete with a ridiculous video, smoke, laser, and light show, and an encore of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Great Gig in the Sky, Wish You Were Here, some instrumental thing that sounded like it could have been from the song Sheep (while a giant inflatable pig with huge tusks and bulging red eyes floated over the stage), and Brain Damage/Eclipse. They nailed every aspect of Floyd's sound, from the vocals and guitar tones down to the most minute detail. If they are coming close to you, I'd recommend you check them out. Worth every penny of the $40 ticket.

Songs:
Have a Cigar I initially hated the song (D=) but it eventually warmed up to me. The lyrics in general are pretty sweet and the ending guitar solo is wicked.
Learning To Fly Another one that I had to warm up to before liking, amazing guitar parts and great meaningful lyrics.
Fearless This best early song in my opinion. The version from Works that I have includes some chanting in it from some soccer team. It really is sweet.

Favorite album is close between Wish You Were Here and Works. I'll go with Wish You Were Here because Works is really a compilation. Pretty much a Syd Barrett tribute as more than half the song is Shine On You Crazy Diamond, but the other three songs on it are quite amazing as well. Really makes the album amazing.

A lot of people say Animals was one of their weakest albums etc, but honestly, it's probably one of, if not my favourite. As for The Wall, no idea how everyone loves it so much. I found it depressing and lacking in the 'spark' that their prior works had. Probably too much of Roger, because all of the good tracks on the album (in my opinion) were co-written by Gilmour.

Pigs is my favorite song by Pink Floyd. I love the guitar distortion and sounds in this song. Echoes is also a great song. It's so damn long and has some really weird parts that I think are awesome.

So, where to begin?

In terms of albums, I think I'd say Wish You Were Here is my favourite overall. While Dark Side of the Moon is also masterful, and one of the best albums of all time, I think the former just edges it due to the pure beauty of songs like Shine On You Crazy Diamond and the title track. Animals has some amazing parts but I have yet to hear it in one go. Division Bell has some brilliant tracks but as a whole isn't as strong as the earlier albums. Last, but definitely not least, The Wall is up there with WYWH and DSOTM. It's one of those albums which is perfect from an album point of view - the songs fit together brilliantly and it could probably pass for about four tracks if you played it on vinyl/gapless CD/something.

Now for tracks (this might take a while):

Rather than listing entire albums, I'll go for certain magnificent tracks. For example, the standout on Wish You Were Here, in my opinion, is the title track (followed closely by the epic bookends). On Dark Side, Time and Any Colour You Like are probably my favourites, although as I listen through it I change my mind on every track. :P

Pigs (Three Different Ones) has the nostalgia, as it's one of the songs I remember hearing as a child - it's still just as good now. High Hopes is one I discovered recently but the chorus and slide guitar just make it into one of my favourites. Moving onto The Wall, The Happiest Days of our Lives is another nostalgic song, whereas Another Brick In The Wall (part 1) is almost tantalising, waiting for the next song to pounce. Comfortably Numb, famous for its guitar solo, is possibly my favourite song of all time, and Hey You is just beautiful. Empty Spaces/What Shall We Do Now? (or whatever you want to call it) is a great song; the second half was cut from the album, but Bryan Adams adds to it greatly in Berlin. Nobody Home has great lyrics to fit the soft music.

I can't help but feel I've left something out, but oh well. I still retain my view that David Gilmour puts the most feeling into his music out of all the guitarists that I've heard, making songs like Comfortably Numb and High Hopes even more brilliant.

I must say Dark Side is easily my favorite, followed by the Wall...Dark Side only wins because of the absolutely brilliant lyrics..

Time is hands down the best song ever written the lyrics, solo, vocals everything about it is perfect and fits together perfectly, and Brain Damage/Eclipse has sooooo many killer lines in it. Roger waters is truly the best composer and lyricist EVER.

In The Flesh off the Wall is heaven as well..that guitar work is stellar..

And i could speak for hours about Shine on you Crazy Diamond.

Pink Floyd are currently my favorite band i'd say

I really did think The Wall was pretty sub-par. Care to explain your reasoning?

Sub-par? At the time no one had ever really told a story with music..sure there were a few others but never as popular. I will admit it's over hyped, but I've just found that i listen to it a lot...i'll admit several bits of the second half is a little sub-par...and perhaps WYWH may be better, but i like the Wall a lot.

Quadrophenia, Tommy, various Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals and Thick as a Brick are all examples of albums which had a narrative element, not to mention countless others.

I'll just reiterate what I already said, but quite frankly it was too depressing and therefore it got boring.

it was very depressing, i'll give you that, and WYWH is probably the better album...i just listen to the wall second most I guess i should say.

I personally like Goodbye Blue Sky but Run like Hell is also very awsome.

I like Goodbye blue sky. Seeing as The Wall is the only album I have then It'll be a song off that album. Although I do like Mother the most.

Take your pick from the 70's. They were so prolific and progressive. One album after another and each was an evolution of the one before, but not an indication of what's to come. The bottom line is, I can't decide because once I do, it's bound to change because there's so much goodness to choose from.

My god, how can I really decide on something like this? Picking favorites for stuff of theirs is something I can't do without wanting to change my mind later. Oh, I guess right now I'd say my favorite album would be Meddle. Than after that would be Dark Side of the Moon, then a tie with Wish You Were Here and The Wall, next would be Animals, then Ummagumma, Obscured by Clouds, and last would be A Momentary Lapse of Reason. This all of coarse is bound to change around every now and again. Especially when I get around to listening to The Final Cut, Division Bell, and all their earlier work.

AMLOR has been the only one of their works I haven't been particularly fond of. I don't dislike it, but I thought it was a very boring album.
