View Full Version : When I Die Please Play ......

So I thought it'd be interesting to start a thread about what song you'd like to be played at your funeral and why. Don't post a song unless you're going to tell why you want that song to be played at your funeral and don't just say "because itz kool!"
This is kind of cliché but I'm going to have to go with.
The Great Gig In The Sky by Pink Floyd
The reason I'd choose this is every time I listen to it I always seem to reflect on someone I know that died. I think about good times with that person and making it through bad times and I usually end up crying because they're gone. I'd want people to do this at my funeral except for the crying. I'd want them to remember good times with me and making it through the tougher times. The songs also sort of a reassuring beauty to it too.

Higher by Creed.
Even if you have never heard the song, even the title is pretty self explanatory.
Can you take me higher?
To a place where blind men see
Can you take me higher?
To a place with golden streets
I don't want to go to Hell. I want to go to Heaven. (No more religion.)
Creed is one of my favorite bands, and Higher is a really good song.
And I certantly don't want Highway to Hell by AC/DC.

My friend and I have this agreement where if I die first, he sings Danny Boy at my funeral, whereas if he dies first, I sing Swing Low, Sweet Chariot at his.
However, I was doing one of those dinky Myspace music surveys where you put your library on shuffle and it gives you different songs for different scenarios, and All These Things That I've Done by The Killers came up for my funeral song. I was like, "huh, that's actually pretty appropriate." It seems like a song played when you look back at someone's life, and I just love the "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" refrain.
Another option is either Let Down by Radiohead. It's my favorite song of all time, and it still brings tears to my eyes when I listen to it. What better song to play at my funeral?

I'd want my family to play "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" but I think the humor would be lost on most people.

If you do that make sure that the guy makes reference to the fact that you are not restin', but pinin' for the fjords.

And if one half of the congregation could yell/refer to the other half as "splittuhs" I may just come back to life.

The Benny Hill theme. Reason is I would find it hilarious (if I were to see it) just because its so unfitting for a funeral. I'd also like the floor to be waxed so there's a zany line of people falling and running into each other while trying to view the body, and for the pallbearers to carry the casket while blindfolded and on roller skates (possibly having loaded mousetraps thrown at them).
I dislike funerals because of how serious and depressing they are. Even if I can't have it as crazy as I'd like, I'd still like to offend and hopefully humor people with a different take on something as grim as death.

Drink To The Dead -- Clutch
Despite about 2/3 of this thing having oddball, nonsensical lyrics.... I love the core of the meaning of the song. Drink to dead and mourn for them but don't let grief consume you because you'll be reunited soon enough.

Time by Pink Floyd, possibly a reminder of others to live by what the song says because it's so true. Not to mention that it's an amazing song and is quite godly.

Hurt, by Johnny Cash with Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd played at the end, timed correctly so that the ending solo starts playing when I get lowered into the ground.

Mentioning a Floyd song that hasn't been said yet, High Hopes would be epic. The ending solo fading out would be perfect for a funeral.
Of course, you could be mean and put "One Way Ticket To Hell And Back" by the Darkness on. Or TAAAD's suggestion. :P
Austin.

Yea bro , High Hopes would be awesome.

"Freebird" would be awesome, mostly b/c of the final scene from The Devil's Rejects, though I doubt I'd be going out in a blaze of glory. For me, I would chose "Motion Picture Soundtrack" by Radiohead. Something about that harp makes very dramatic.

Typical memory/ remembrance fair.
Flogging Molly- If I Ever Leave This World Alive
Green Day- Time of Your Life
Five for Fighting- 100 Years
Nickelback- Photograph
Yellowcard- Shadows and Regrets; One Year, Six Months
And for the fun of it:
The All American Rejects- Top of the World
Also: I'd post links to Youtube videos of the songs, but Youtube has a habit of crashing Firefox on me out of nowhere so I won't be doing that. If you want to here the songs, look 'em up.

"tell them that though my body is gone i am still living. and you'll see me again."

Yea. One Last Breath by Creed would be a very good death song.
Can't believe I didn't think of that song considering Creed is in my top 5 or so favorite bands..

Iron Maiden's "Only the Good Die Young" because that title fits and I don't want a somber wedding. I want there to be a band playing this and everyone gets into a big pit and my casket crowd surfs.
That would be pretty epic. Other than that I'd not really have any idea for a song that would be good for a funeral. I'd want the Transiberian Orchestra discography looped. At least everyone likes them.

I want Selkies: The Endless Obsession by Between the Buried and Me to play, with the sweeps playing as my casket goes into the ground and the fade out to finish just as the last shovel of dirt goes in the hole. THAT would be epic.

That's exactly how I feel and I've thought about that song myself. But it seems that if I die my family will play "Carry On My Wayward Son". A great song but I want to go out with a bang.

"As the Footsteps Die Away Forever" by Streetlight Manifesto seems most appropriate, but I've never been one for somber anything.
So, I'm gonna have to go with "Today" by Smashing Pumpkins.

I would probably want Song About Old Roller Coaster by Bear vs. Shark played at my funeral.

I think he meant they'd cry as a result of sitting through an hour long song, and at a funeral nonetheless.
For me, it would be the greatest funeral ever.

Well, I don't doubt Sleep's awesomeness (I personally like Holy Mountain better,) but as for that really drone-y stoner doom I have to go with Absolutego by Boris.

"Don't Stop Dancing" by Creed because it just has that "otherworldly" vibe as a lot of their songs do.
"Who Wants to Live Forever" by Breaking Benjamin because it's so different from Queen's version.
"No More Mr. Nice Guy" by Alice Cooper or Megadeth because, strangely, I think a lot of folks at the funeral would be relieved.
"Welcome Home" by King Diamond just because I would like an awesome mosh to happen at my funeral. This one is strictly for the moshers.
"Big Rock Candy Mountain" by Harry McClintock because, though it's not actually about death, it lets the folks at the funeral know I have plans for the afterlife.
The list could go on forever, and I'd absolutely love some by Elton John to be playing as well.

It's tempting to make everyone sit through WITTR's I Will Lay Down My Bones... but I think right now the frontrunner would be Skin of the Night by M83. I'd hope it would leave everyone incredibly distraught. That would be perfect. Also Still Light by The Knife. That would work.

I'm going Viking, for religious reasons. Getting burned on a funeral pyre, and my wife's going with me. No need to scatter my ashes in the sea, because, technically, they'll already be there.

I've seen you say so much about him recently that I finally decided to listen to him. I absolutely despise rap but, I've got to say he's amazing. It's nice to hear rap that doesn't just repeat the same thing over and over again and is intelligent instead of just about money, hoes, you know the typical rap subjects....

Cremation. My ashes then go into the Ganga (Ganges). Purity :D.
And glad you liked Tech, Indiana. If you go to the Best Rapper Alive Thread in the Voting Booth, I've doled out a plethora of rappers, 90% of whom don't talk about hos and bling. Hip-hop in its essence has nothing to do with either, and this is best reflected in the underground and the classics. The game has sadly been pimped by record company execs who control their big artists like f*ckin puppets.

I can't think of anything right now that I'd like played at my own funeral, but for others, if they died prematurely, by accident at a young aged, I think "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton is appropriate.
Some time down the road when my dad eventually dies, I'm sure there won't be music at his funeral but I'd probably be playing "Desperado" by The Eagles a lot while I'm grieving because it makes me think of him.

As well as what I said before, I'd also like the first movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata to be played. Why? Because I want every single person at the funeral to be crying (yes, it's kind of mean, but I'd like to go with a bang :P), and that song, in my opinion, is the best for the job. Also other depressing songs like Wires by Athlete, Leaving New York by REM and Nobody Home by Pink Floyd.

I would like to add another song to my list, "Dreamflight" by After Forever because it evokes alot of emotion, and will make a powerful statement.
