Sorry if this question has been brought up before, but what do you guys think. Does your mood affect the music you listen to, or does the music you listen to affect your mood?

Both for me. What I'm feeling at the time normally dictates what I listen to when I'm on the computer (anger, frustration, hate=Rammstein, Lamb Of God, Unearth, happiness=Ozzy, Godsmack, depressed=alice in chains, horny=bloodhound gang), and it works the opposite way as well.

Yeah, mood is everything for me. A day when you're depressed, you need that grimey street sh*t; old-school DMX, Mobb Deep, Onyx. If you're brooding over stuff, you need that Immortal Technique, Ill Bill, or Hell Razah. If you're in a celebratory funk, you just want the bass to boom.
There are somber days where I like nothing better than to go all black-on-black, scowl, and march through the suburbs, blasting "The Third World" and "Bin Laden" through my phone's speakers (Voyager; it has some GREAT speakers.) :D

If I'm in a good mood, I'll listen to Hard Rock stuff.
If I'm in a bad mood, I don't listen to music. Because most of what I listen too will only make me madder...

I think your mood and current emotion has every effect on the music your going to want to listen to. I don't mean to be a philosopher here but I believe music bridges the gap between mind and soul. whatever mindset or mood I'm in is going to determine what the music I write or listen to is going to sound like.
I think your question is difficult because it's hard for me to differentiate between the two. If I'm about to hit the stage for a rockin show that I know is gonna have a great high energy atmosphere I might be getting myself further in the mood by listening to megadeth- tornado of souls or In flames- crawl through knives. My mood dictates what i WANT to listen to while the music also affects my mood. They are intertwined for me.

Definetely both for me as well. There are times I'll listen to dance music to make myself feel happier or more energized. Dance music is just "my high". Theres also times when I'm feeling nostalgic and with that I'll listen to Avenged Sevenfold, Sublime, or Nirvana to name a few. When I'm in the mood for a good laugh I'll turn to Turnonegro or some crazy hip-hop like Lil Jon and Eminem. Other times when I'm depressed and I just want to ride it out I'll put on country music...but thats not often. Its worth mentioning too that with any of the rap/hip-hop I listen it really does empower me :chuckle:

None of the above are true for me, usually. Sometimes I get nostalgic listening A Perfect Circle, or the song "A Daisy Chain 4 Satan" by My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, but otherwise, I'm usually just jamming to something wicked cool and it'll pretty much fit every mood or state of mind. It's usually just a question of do I want hard stuff or do I want extremely hard stuff, or do I want pschedelic stuff, or if I'm trying to freak somebody out or blow their mind.
I drive and listen to music a lot, with various people, so that's where those states of mind come from.
*EDIT*
Every once and awhile, though, I'll throw in the Lil' Wyte. That's just a random streak.
