Well its almost time for the second presidential debate. CNN says McCain may be at a disadvantage, simply because there are more registered Democrats, and there may be more Democrats watching, on top of that the top issue is the economy.

Based on the first question and the responses to Brokaw (both lengthy), I think they did about as good a job on both sides. Both tried to be empathetic and explain their ideas.

EDIT:

Wow... he's blaming Fannie and Freddie's abuse on Obama, and the reaction of uncommitted Ohio voters on CNN just fell severely... They really don't like this mudslinging.

~Mr. Indecisive~
October 7th, 2008, 08:49 PM
I noticed that, when Obama was talking the reaction peaked, but now both seem to be going after each other.

Dean
October 7th, 2008, 08:50 PM
I think Obama's done a much better job handling the questions overall so far. Just judging by both the Ohio voters and the actual quality of responses, Obama seems to be connecting more with voters' fears and concerns.

Oh man, huge spike when Obama said healthcare and began talking about energy...

Ryan!
October 7th, 2008, 08:52 PM
Huge spike when Obama started talking. McCain keeps spewing the same rhetoric. I also like how he avoided the first question and tried to talk about energy again.

Dean
October 7th, 2008, 08:56 PM
lol, it's bottoming out while McCain is attacking Obama... It's spiking toward the end when he goes back to the actual question and the topic, but still not as high as what Obama got.

EDIT: McCain didn't even freaking rank them. Obama at least put Energy as most important, and he got a great reaction from the uncommitted voters for that. I like that Obama is actually ordering them and explaining the importance of each.

Ryan!
October 7th, 2008, 08:58 PM
WAY TO PANSY OUT OF THE QUESTION!

Christ, he couldn't rank priorities? What a maverick.

~Mr. Indecisive~
October 7th, 2008, 08:59 PM
Looks like McCain is flat-lining again. Plus I he isn't putting forward much in the way of new policies. It seems like McCain is just talking about his record of "reaching across the isle, etc., etc., etc." I want to know what his plans are, instead of hearing about his record, while it is important, I feel he doesn't have much substance.

Ah, gfg. I'm expecting a spike for Obama here.

~Mr. Indecisive~
October 7th, 2008, 09:07 PM
McCain keeps talking about how he will cut a lot of programs, but won't cut spending on defense, but if you want to cut spending, then cut it across the board, no exceptions.

Also when it comes to increasing oil supplies, why does is seem like neither talk about other sources of oil, like algae, and other sources of gasoline, like I have read about a company called Virent Energy Systems, which is developing a way to produce gasoline from biomass.

Dean
October 7th, 2008, 09:07 PM
Obama is at least getting specific here at certain points. Both are padding their answers, like Ryan and I were talking about on MSN. But I think Obama is doing better at connecting with concerns and getting specific, whereas McCain is being pretty vague and ineffective at some points. He can deliver a few good attack lines, but overall, so far I have to give this to Obama. There's still an hour to go, though.

EDIT: Actually, Mr. Indecisive, in the past Obama and McCain have both talked about bio-fuels. They didn't here, because right now I don't think it's a big enough market. Same with compressed natural gas. You have to invest in improving them first, I think.

And here's another big attack line from McCain... "Obama will raise yer taxes! Oh no!" and the numbers crash for McCain.

People aren't buying this crap from John at all.

~Mr. Indecisive~
October 7th, 2008, 09:10 PM
Here we go with the "Obama will raise taxes" again, and the undecided don't seem to be buying it, well they weren't until he brought up the child exemption tax.

Dean
October 7th, 2008, 09:17 PM
I wonder how many times each candidate has said "special interests" and "lobbyists."

Haha, numbers tanking when McCain lied about Obama raising taxes...

here in tennessee? they're in north carolina

Dean
October 7th, 2008, 09:28 PM
They're in Tennessee, Kut.

Obama's healthcare plan is so sound that McCain just looks bad by attacking it instead of talking about what HE wants to do. I think Obama is definitely winning this debate, and it's been an hour. We've got half an hour left, and I'd put Obama ahead on the majority of the questions.

Dean

Holy sh*t, did you see the plateau Obama caused when he was talking about healthcare? The reaction for women just spiked and stayed on the very top line for a good 25 seconds.

Obama is crushing

Somehow Obama even beat McCain on foreign policy, again. Incredible. Obama is just... crushing McCain in this debate, even with John's lies.

I think we can go ahead and put this debate in the win column for Obama... I can't see him losing when he just beat McCain on his own strong suit. His answers are so much better, while McCain is sticking to his failed game plan of "Obama doesn't understand."

This has become kind of one-sided now...

Oh, yeah, McCain... Obama is the one who "talks loudly." Obama will consider meeting with world leaders, even enemies. You make jokes and songs about bombing Iran.

obama said "kill bin ladin" and support from men skyrocketed. both of them stayed near the top. mccain went negative for a bit on that scale, now he is hovering above neutral

:rotfl:

oh, mine. actually i decidded to just not stop

Dean
October 7th, 2008, 09:47 PM
How about each time McCain speaks, you just down whatever's closest to you? :P

They're going to use that tidbit of Obama saying that McCain wants to say Obama's green behind the ears and McCain is somber in an attack ad, and it won't work, just like the one from the first debate where Obama agreed with McCain but specified where they were different.

But you know they'll use it in an ad by the way McCain reacted with "thank you very much."

Ryan!

tom brokaw is pissed. mccain can barely get above the neutral line now. he is losing women now.

Dean
October 7th, 2008, 09:56 PM
Every time Mccain attacks Obama on either being "inexperienced" or "wrong", his reaction lines suffer... greatly.

McCain said Obama was right in some respects. Put that in an ad. ;)

McCain finally gets a great reaction, whether he deserves to or not. But he got a great reaction due to his knowledge on Russia and the Cold War. However, in a lot of cases, he's talking too much about the past.

I like Obama's point about anticipating instead of being reactive. I thought that was a good perspective, but McCain is more of an expert on Russia. I like that Obama made sure he explained the role of energy in becoming self-reliant and avoiding conflicts with Russia.

lol, "Maybe."

How can you give a one-word answer to that question? Silly, Brokaw...

The Eye in the Sky!
October 7th, 2008, 09:58 PM
I'm not much for politics but from what I've been seeing, Obama looks so much smarter than McCain that its just sad. I'm not sure if I'm seeing things like other people, though, so I could be off. I'd like to hear more about energy as that is my big concerns and Obama seems to be more on point with me.

I'm not really sure about foreign stuff so I dunno who sounds better but the domestic stuff has me liking more of Obama right now.

Dean
October 7th, 2008, 09:59 PM
McCain really lucked out that the final questions in the debate have been about foreign policy, McCain's strong suit. However, once McCain attacked Obama over semantics, he got a bad reaction from the uncommitted Ohio voters.

If the topic changes on the final question, particularly back to the economy in some way, I think Obama will end strongly. But I give the debate to Obama thus far.

EDIT: Nevermind, Obama just owned him on foreign policy... incredible.

9:29 PM [Sean] The dials love Barack Obama. I'll be surprised if he didn't win the focus groups.

9:31 PM. [Nate] Well, Sean, since you broke the seal, I guess I'll just say that I think this was a clear win for Obama -- much clearer than Round 1 -- and that I expect the polls and focus groups will reflect it. Again, it's all about tone and body language ... if you read a transcript of the debate, it might be a tie.

I agree that I think most media pundits are trying to play it as a modest win for Obama or a "too close to call," but the American people, especially those undecided voters on CNN, responded MUCH better to Obama.

I disagree with Five Thirty Eight, however, that even reading a transcript of the debate would be a tie or MIGHT be a tie. I think Obama's explanations and responses were better, even without the difference in delivery and composure.

Ants!
October 8th, 2008, 12:18 PM
However, in a lot of cases, he's talking too much about the past.

That's true, but Obama did use the "you agreed to go into Iraq" line again.

Dean
October 8th, 2008, 12:21 PM
What I hear from McCain over and over is that Obama is wrong on Iraq and that McCain is right because he was for the troop surge. I think Obama's greatest defense to that is McCain was wrong on going in there in the first place, even if he was right about one specific tactic.
