what is this game?

its a side scrolling game/platformer where u are this tank and it jumps and what not and you can leave the tank and your teeny tiny and if u get hurt by the flying aliens or any alien you basically die and your useless outside of your tank....but the purpose of leaving the tank is to go inside these small doors and go kill this huge boss and u play it that way like old zelda style. this has bothered me for along time now and i need to know what this game is

it is indeed blaster master thank you for all your help.....ive been looking for the name of this game for like 3 years and it didnt occur to me until now to post in the forum...im going to look for a copy of this game and relive what ive been missing
