Except I'm just asking what you'd say is a better purchase (for the Xbox 360). I've heard Winning is still quite good, but FIFA has improved greatly. Still in a fix about which one to buy though. Any recommendation?

PES 2008 (I wish they'd called it 7 tbh) is worse than previous incarnations but better than FIFA. I'd personally either rent it and see what you think, buy it regardless (it's probably really cheap now) or wait for 09.

I haven't played either of the current incarnations enough to say. It's widely held that Fifa is much closer this year though.

I've been playing the Fifa 09 demo on my 360 in the past couple of days and it's actually quite decent.

I like the fact that I get FIFA a day before Europe and a fortnight before North America.
I can get it and give you'll a review on them if you like.

You shouldn't buy one just yet as both FIFA and PES are releasing their new games in October.

As for which one to go for, I'd say PES provides a lot more enjoyment and satisfaction. The PES demo is not yet out, but from what I've seen from trailers and what I've read, this years version is looking great, everything that PES2008 should have been.

You'll be happy with whatever decision you make, like Jamie, I also played the FIFA 09 demo and I'd share his opinion on it. It's the first time in many years that I actually enjoyed myself while playing a FIFA game.

I'm not sure how much time you've got on your hands, but you should have a look at some gameplay trailers of both games and perhaps get your hands on the demos. I'm not sure when the PES demo is out but I'd imagine it would be within the next two weeks.

Well I'm kinda surprised by what both of you think. I downloaded the Fifa 09 demo and I didn't think it was that good at all. It seems a bit better than Fifa 07, but its still too mechanical for me. I just don't find it very free flowing. The last Pro Evo I played was the one from two years ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed that one. I hope there hasn't been too many changes from then. Definitely not purchasing Fifa 09 though.

Yeah I know it doesn't come out yet. (I guessed you were talking to me)

I decided I'd download the Demo for FIFA 09 and I agree with you it was quite enjoyable.

I think I will probably end up getting them both anyway

Well, IMO 08 was pretty smooth..dunno about 07.
The Fifa 09 demo was..wierd, tbh. Felt too realistic. As in the guys didn't feel slow, but they didn't exactly feel fast either.
Maybe it was something with the settings.

But yeah, wait it out till about November, and then I would recommend renting them if you can.
Me personally, I'll be buying Fifa as i bought 08 and loved it. (Manager mode was fun as always, and I can't wait to play more of the "player mode" Where you play on the field as only one guy.)

Fifa 09 has slowed down, which is the trend it seems. Even though it takes some getting used to, once you adapt to the pace of the game you can put together some very satisfying moves. I think the strength of the game is the runs that your own team mates make. At times I think the runs they make are just a little too good, and the through ball to the wing gets played too often by the AI (it also seems to be impossible to defend against it). On the whole though it's better than any previous Fifa incarnation in the past five years for me.

That through ball being too perfect is what I think the problem with this game is. Now from what I gather, you haven't consistently played FIFA for many years. The thing is, you can figure out FIFA. You'll know exactly when to hit the through ball, and you'll be scoring the same goal over and over again. There's this thing called the finesse shot in FIFA, and we became so perfect at it that it meant we'd score any time one of us reached the edge of the box. It just get way too boring. Its the same shot, same attempt by the keeper to save, and the same goal. Its just no fun after a while.

Ah, well if that long standing Fifa fault is still the issue I think I'll give the full game a miss. I won't be able to go back to scoring the same goal over and over again after playing PES for so many years.

Yes I more enjoy playing against my friends in FIFA but I liked last years Manager Mode.

Much closer THIS YEAR? Its widely held that Fifa 08 was a better game than PES 2008.
It sounds like you are implying that PES beats Fifa every year. Sure mostly PES has beaten Fifa but that was not the case last year.

As terrible as PES2008 was, I still found it more enjoyable that FIFA.

PES was still the game being played, in general the only people who play FIFA are those looking for the licences. Not too bad for a game that was essentially incomplete...

With the exception of last year, where both games came under criticism and things were considered to be closer, PES does beat Fifa every year. And from the demos this year will get that trend back on track.

i wonder why on the xbox 360 version of pes you get a nike ball and actual addias branded player shoes, but not on the ps2 version..?

Then I guess this is one subject we will never agree on.

Probably not.

I finally managed to play Pro Evo 7 (I'd rather not call it 08) for a bit longer and it's actually a lot better than I thought. Not as good as 6 or maybe even 4, but it's still damn good and better than Fifa.
