I took one of my screenshots from Halo 3, where I nailed someone in a Ghost following me and a friend on a Mongoose with a Spartan Laser, and used it as a base to paint over with the oil paint tool in Artrage.

It's definitely not as detailed as the original screenshot, as I didn't put much time into the texture of the concrete or sand. The beam from the Spartan Laser was also pretty hard to do, and wound up slightly lopsided I think. Also looking at it now, I didn't put as much curve on the wing of the Ghost as there should be.

Overall, for about 30 minutes work with my graphics tablet I'm fairly happy with it.

I like how you focused less on the ghost and more on the mongoose with the two spartans, almost as if to point out how close they came to getting murdered. It sets the mood well.
Also, the windshield on the 'goose is done very well. The transparency is quite clear (lol pun). And the shading and textures on the Spartans is excellent, for the style of oil painting I could tell you were going for.
Nicely done.

This was actually done pretty well. Damn well, if I do say. You sir, do not fail!

This one didn't feel like it took as long, and as a result I don't think I put as much detail into it. It probably wasn't the easiest screenshot to work with, because explosions are really freaking hard to paint.

It doesn't help that Halo 3's bloom reduces that Warthog to a mass of white and subtle orange. Still, this is an interesting idea. It reminds me of when I was playing around with vector graphics. I'd love to see one with more detail.

A little dark, and that texture on the wall in the top right was a bitch to try to replicate. The only thing I could think of to match it was using charcoal over the top, but that wouldn't have fit with the rest of the image.

I thought that you accidentally posted the screenshot twice for a moment there.
That's amazing. Only the wall of the shaft looks off.. How long did it take you to make that?

I might go back and try to fix that wall at the top of the pipe. It looks horrible, but I'm still not sure how to fix it.
Edit: I added some stippling to the back wall and metal girders. Looks a little better, but still not perfect.
Mergdit: For posterity, here's the bigger version of that last painting. I'm actually using it as my desktop now.

This is something I did a while ago using Gimp. I don't use Gimp all that often though, so it isn't that great, but I did fool a few people with it.
Also, I would post the original picture, but I have no idea where it's at.

Damn Ben, nice. Personal favorite is the first image. I really like how well done the Spartan Laser was. The second one looked a little bit weird to me, did you not paint the part where the second image was? It looks real big and white, unlike the actual screenshot.

The explosion was painted with white paint, not left as a blank spot. I did make the explosion far more vibrant than it originally was, but it was a rush job and I didn't want to spend much time trying to get the warthog to stand out through the blast.

heh. When I saw the thread title, I thought: "Holy sh*t! Ben is working in oils?!?"
That's an interesting tool with an interesting effect. And "clean-up" must be a breeze. :link:

Yeah, I suppose it's kind of cheating because you don't have to be as careful, but that's one of the pleasures I enjoy about working digitally. If you make a screwup, it's much easier to reverse or hide than working with a physical medium. Some might argue that that takes all of the skill out of painting, I suppose it does in a way, but the image itself doesn't suffer from it so who cares..?
I was actually considering doing some more stuff like this with some other game screenshots. I'm thinking Left 4 Dead could have some nice outcomes with it's dark palette.

Great idea, they look really good. The third one looks almost like the real game, I'm impressed.

damn, that was a sick laser.
Oh right, artwork.
The detail on MC in the last picture was extremely well done. If I may ask, what kind of tablet are you using?

Just a Wacom CTE-430. It's only about 6x4", but it gets the job done. I really want one of those $2,000 ones with LCD screen on the actual tablet area.
