Jamie and I are talking about this in the vgb forum.
Which of the series do you prefer/ think is better?

I played Pro Evoat my friends place once and I didnt go back there ever again (since thats allhe plays).
Why FIFA is better:
1. Controlles
2. Graphics
3. Gameplay (miles ahead)So let me get this straight. You have been playing Fifa since 1997, then you played Pro Evo once and decided that Fifa was better? The games play differently. Did you expect to be suddenly fantastic at Pro Evo playing it once?
The current set of games aside (because I have played neither of them), Pro Evo has always been streets ahead of Fifa in terms of gameplay. The game plays like real football. The ball is a separate entity in itself. It doesn't stick to players- it moves like a ball should. Graphics, fair enough, Fifa has the edge there. But football games are not about graphics. They are about gameplay. And Pro Evo has always been ahead in that department.

The physics of Pro Evo are also far superior - contesting for headers, no two goals the same, etc. There really isn't anything FIFA actually beats Pro Evo on except licenses, and that really doesn't matter. Also, Pro Evo has a few little things which help - PES Points/shop, edit mode, Master League (which I still haven't managed to get the hang of yet), original soundtrack (listening to the same songs on FIFA gets annoying, the best one is Tei Tei Tei), more options before matches (rainbow trail on replays, different refs, different footballs, different amounts of fans including separate for each team), the list goes on. I always used to like FIFA. Then I bought Pro Evo 4.
To be fair, FIFA 08 isn't as abysmal as the others, but Pro Evo is a lot better. Still, I generally prefer Football Manager to both of them. :P Except maybe Pro Evo...I really can't decide.
EDIT: Actually, I do prefer FM, ignore the sentence after the :P

This year's PES was pretty damn poor, but it's still more enjoyable than Fifa. : /

I've rented Pro evo 5 and 6, which I also regretted.
The thing that puts me off on PES is the liscensing. You may say it doesnt matter, but it irritates to me to see teams not having the correct kit and and name.

Not that the licensing has anything to do with the gameplay. You can edit the teams, as well, if you really want the names.
Also, what didn't you like about PES 5 and 6?

I was a Fifa fan for years then I gave Pro Evo a chance and have never looked back.

I hated everything about it. From the graphics to the gameplay. I dont see how the physics of pes are better than FIFA. Also, You cant beat FIFA's engine.

Yeah but not the kits.

Pro Evo would be perfection if they had the licensing, I do like having the real names but certainly not at the expense of gameplay.

They can and they have. For example, when a ball is cleared by a CB or GK, and two players are trying to head it, one of two things could happen. On FIFA, it will either go to you or your opponent. In Pro Evo, you have to contest for it and it could go anywhere - much more realistic. Also, the ball is a completely separate entity from the players, unlike where it's practically stuck to their feet on FIFA. The goals in FIFA are repetitive, whereas on Pro Evo you'll rarely score the same goal twice.
What specifically didn't you like about the graphics/gameplay? Those are two very wide terms.

It's been like this for ages:
Pro = Better gameplay, graphics (IMO)
FIFA = They just have ther money to buy the licenses
my first football game on the ps1 was fifa 1998 now that was good seeing as it had no pro around lol

I dont see how the physics of pes are better than FIFA. Pro Evo physics are very close to the real thing. FIFA's physics aren't. It really is that simple.

Well thats not completely true.
They can and they have. For example, when a ball is cleared by a CB or GK, and two players are trying to head it, one of two things could happen. On FIFA, it will either go to you or your opponent. In Pro Evo, you have to contest for it and it could go anywhere
In FIFA you DO have to contest for the ball. Probably not the same way as in PES, but you still have to. In Fifa its all about the timing. The ball can also go anywhere. There have been countless of times where the ball have flown over both players heads.
FIFA's physics aren't.
I havent played PES for long enough to really judge the physics of it. What I do know is that the physics in FIFA is great and I just dont see how you can beat it.

Yes, it is. In Pro Evo you aim for the ball to tackle, not the player.

I've only played FIFA so I won't offer comparisons. But reviews I've read have said that Pro Evo was far better up until this year. They feel that Pro Evo might have the slight edge but FIFA is catching up in a serious manner. I don't like the no-licenses on Pro Evo. But like I said, I've never played it, but I did vote FIFA.

Reading the thread in the VGB made me realise that Winning Eleven and PES are the same. Turns out that I have Winning Eleven 12 (or so it says). Im pretty sure that it corresponds with PES 2008 cos when I checked the squads Henry wasnt in Arsenal. What seemed weird is that the menus are completely different.
The game is AWFUL. I played it once before and it never take me long to switch off the console. The controls are just plain down weird and dumb. The graphics are terrible compared to FIFA and gameplay truly does suck. The shooting is strange (every shot inside the box is a goal). The AI is really miles behind.
Note: I had to re-connect my PS2 to play it. Dont worry I was comparing it to the Ps2 version of FIfa.

Should try the PS3 version. It'll knock your socks off.

Maybe because you spend such little time with PES compared to FIFA, you don't see what PES has to offer. The controls are just plain down weird and dumb. They're hardly different to FIFA, really, what's wrong with them? The graphics are terrible compared to FIFA Debatable. and gameplay truly does suck. You still haven't explained exactly what it is about the gameplay you like. The shooting is strange (every shot inside the box is a goal). As opposed to FIFA 06, where any shot in the blue area of the bar was a goal, or the free kicks in 04 and 05. If you find it too easy to score, play on a harder difficulty. The AI is really miles behind. It's really not.

As I already said, the shooting is is plain down weird. Tried it on another harder level and it still hardly makes a different (except for the keeper occasionaly saving it). PES somehow has the feeling of Fifa street 2 (which for a street soccer game would be good).

I'm comparing PES 08 to Fifa 08.
As for the AI, I dont see much wrong with the cpu team's players. I am however disgusted with the AI of your own team players. They run backwards when I run forwards leaving me alone completely. Many times I was stranded in the oppositions box with defenders completely disabling me to run forward, and there is no one to support me. In Fifa you'll never have this problem.

PES in recent years has had much improved AI however you can never get quite the unpredictability of playing a friend which is how I always play football games.

Actually there were some games over here a few years ago, for football, where the game learns your friend's tendencies. And when he's gone, you can practice against his moves.

I was reffering to the AI of your own team not the opposition's team.

Ah...how the zero tactics invovled in Fifa can spoil you. Go to the formations and strategies, and set how and where you want particular players to move, and you'll find it a lot more flowing.
Tried it on another harder level and it still hardly makes a different (except for the keeper occasionaly saving it).
I don't know what on earth you're talking about. Play on 5 star difficulty, and beat the game on that then move on to the 6 star difficulty. You won't be complaining about how easy it is to score after that.
I love PES because of its realism. You have to be able to judge how well you can strike the ball depending on where it is in relation to you. You're not going to be able to strike a pildriver from 30 yards if the ball is right next to your left foot. Same goes with crossing and passing.

I dont see how that is different from FIFA.

On ANY level, it should not be so easy to score every shot within the box.

Well, it depends on who you're using. Someone like Henry or Van Nistelrooy should be expected to score a lot of shots in the box.
In response to the first point, it is different. On FIFA, it doesn't matter where the actual ball is, as long as the player has it. On PES, the ball is completely seperate.
