I think he's one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters of this generation . . . and I think the Trio album and Continuum were brilliant. I used to hate him, thought he was one of those boring coffeehouse guys who only fingerpicked and sang softly to get girls, until I started hearing about how good a guitar player he was and I went to see him in concert about a year ago . . . now I'm sold. :)

Anyone else?

I happen to agree with you on this. He's insanely talented, and a great songwriter. I haven't heard too much by him, but what I have I liked. He'd be even better if he started writing harder stuff.

Did you happen to catch him on that sketch on Chappele's Show? One of the funniest skits I've ever seen.

although continuum has some great songs on it, i think i like heavier things and room for squares better.

did you catch 'john mayer has a tv show' on vh1 a few years ago? that was awesome. it was only a one-time show, but it was hilarious.

By no means is John Mayer one of the greatest guitar players of this generation. I am hoping that was a very big exaggeration.

I also used to dislike John Mayer. It was his lyrics and not his guitar skills that changed my mind though. I haven't heard any of the Trio/live album, but I enjoy his studio albums.

If you like Mayer's music you should definitely seek out Teitur and his album Poetry & Airplanes. His guitar work is more complicated, and his songs are lyrically the same if not better than Mayer.

I love John Mayer, but is it just me or does he come off as a light-weight version of Jeff Buckley?

Not exaggerating one bit. He's phenomenal.

Excellent, I'll look that up.

i think he's a good guitarist, but i don't think the stuff on his albums show off his guitar skills. he does a lot of good stuff when he's just messing around.
