Super Smash Bros. Wish-List
The 10 Non-Nintendo characters that shoulda made the cut.
by Phil Pirrello and Richard George

February 1, 2008 - Stars' extended Super Smash Bros. Brawl coverage continues, as earlier this week Nintendo revealed the game's official brawler line-up – all 35 of 'em! – and released the game in Japan. Needless to say, it's been a big week for anyone with a pulse and a Wii.

While the official list of Smashers is both epic and, for the most part, satisfying, we here at IGN couldn't help but wonder what characters should be on the list; we couldn't let our hypothetical mash-ups exist solely in our office conversations and imaginations. No, we think our list of shoulda been's belongs out there for you, the reader, to behold and/or belittle.

Stars' Smash Bros. Wish-List centers on non-Nintendo characters, and our picks are based on a variety of factors, including: Popularity, likelihood, skill-set and overall geek-out desire to see some of our favorite console characters get their shot at a Final Smash. We supply and rank ten dream hopefuls, then you cast your votes in the poll below for those you want in the game. With that said, let the bitching and moaning begin:

Honorable Mention: Master Chief

Yeah, we know the likelihood of Nintendo bringing an American-based Microsoft franchise character into their house is slim, but hear us out: Plasma grenade punch would make for one hell of a Final Smash. The Chief is currently the reigning badass of videogames, and there isn't a self-respecting gamer out there who wouldn't sell their lady friends for a chance to see Chief versus Samus, or versus Link, or Mario, or Ike, or…

It just be plain cool. 'Nuff said.

10. Bomberman

The star of many Bomberman games, whose signature move of throwing bombs at folk and making them go boom, is a little non-descript character who could go a long way. Created by Hudson, the same company responsible for the Mario Party games, Bomberman's inclusion into a Brawl would make sense at some point, as it would be a likely fit alongside Mario and Luigi.

9. Gray Fox

Technically speaking, Frank Jaeger has appeared in Brawl before, as a corner man for the fighters, but he has yet to see center ring action. This robotic ninja would unleash all sorts of TKOs on his opponent, and the prospect of him facing off against Snake is reason enough to get this guy in a game ASAP.

8. Leon S. Kennedy

Resident Evil 2 and 4's Leon is a unique breed of ass kicker; a rookie cop who earned his stripes firing round after round into pissed-off zombies, giant crocs and other terrors the Umbrella Corp. threw his way. He did so without breaking a sweat, and was one of the best things to happen to the Resident Evil franchise. The opportunities the game could mine with him in the melee, the double-bazooka blazing potential his offensive could bring deserves a spot on some future Brawl roster. And maybe his Final Smash could involve wielding zombies like he does so many hand-guns. The more we talk about it, the more we realize it is officially a crime against fandom to deny Leon his chance to Smash.

7. Ryu Hayabusa

Ninja Gaiden's warrior has been around for quite some time; his franchise's historical importance warrants his inclusion alone. A lethal, stealth fighter, Mr. Hayabusa and his Dragon Sword would go through combatants like a deli slicer. His offense would be a tough one to beat, and his Final Smash would make for one hell of a finishing move. Ninjas make any fight better, especially this one.

6. Ryu (Street Fighter)

Can't have one Ryu without the other. Street Fighter is one of the most popular fighting games ever made, and Ryu is arguably one of its better characters; we know he is a fan-favorite amongst IGN readers and staff. Ryu is the only Fighter who can make a sleeveless gi work to his advantage; this wandering warrior and his blunt-force fighting style would fit perfectly in the world of Smash.

5. Sephiroth

Cloud's arch nemesis, alongside fellow baddies Bowser and Ganon, would make for an epic triple-threat, and would help put the Brawl series closer to Legend status. Sephiroth is the type of combatant who could add a much welcomed element of surprise to Brawl game play, entering the fray with a wide variety of possible Smash combos and defenses. The character himself doesn't even know the full extent of his power; Brawl could be the perfect excuse to find out.

4. Pac-Man

Who better to stand alongside such classic videogame characters as Mario, Link, and DK than the Pac? If the message boards are any indication, Pac-Man has been the stuff of hypothetical Brawling since the series premiered. The character is prime for a comeback, and what better way to do so than through this platform release. To all the naysayers out there, imagine for a moment Pac's Final Smash: He devours the Smash Ball like it were an oversized power pellet; his jaws distend to Cloverfield-monster proportions, his opponent goes all blue ghost, and Pac-Man does his best Jaws impersonation. Hell. Yeah.

3. Simon Belmont

We are surprised that this vampire hunter and Big N mascot has yet to receive a formal invitation to the Brawl. For years, Belmont has proven his mettle, slaying various vamps via various means, and thus becoming an icon in the gaming world. The guy deserves a shot to stand along side Mario and Link, and fans deserve a chance to have their dream of fighting with Belmont realized.

2. Cloud

Final Fantasy's hero supreme was rumored to appear in the game for quite some time, but did not make the list. Square Soft's mascot appeared previously in a Nintendo game before, but he deserves more than an easter egg-worthy appearance. Cloud's participation would change the Brawl landscape forever and would give gamers the fight they have wanted to see for a long, long time: Cloud vs. Link.

1. Mega Man

Capcom's blue bomber is a character who needs no introduction, and his absence in the franchise thus far is downright mean. Classic Mega Man, with a few upgrades here and there, is the type of character games like Brawl are made for; his crazy, eclectic fighting style and environments guarantee good times and great gaming. His long-standing history with Nintendo makes Mega Man the most likely potential contender to see his Super Smash number get called, and we can't wait.

Got issues? Gripes? Suggestions? You know where to put them – Drop us a typo-filled opinion or two in the Comment section, and don't forget about voting in the poll. Stay tuned to Stars for more glorious Smash Bros. action.

For the most part, I like the list. The only gripe I really have that turns me into one of those flamboyant fanboys like in the IGN comment section is the suggestion of Leon Kennedy from Resident Evil. Honestly, why him? Of all the Resident Evil characters, Jill Valentine would work much better. She's also a much better character overall.

Ryu Hayabusa would be an awesome character to see. I was hoping to really see him in Brawl actually. I just want a ninja character is all. Hell I'll take Shinobi if I can.

Readers Go Smash
Top 5 wish-list from you, the fans.
by IGN Stars

February 7, 2008 - Last week, Stars provided ten Non-Nintendo characters we most wanted to make the official list of Smash Bros. Brawlers. And, as expected, the game's fan-base came out in full force, flooding the Comments section with a wish-list all their own. Stars culled through all the bitching and moaning to find five premiere characters, five really promising candidates that would make the Brawl arena that much more epic.

From our remote office in Denver, here is the list of the Top Five Reader-Requested, Potential Brawlers:

5. Geno
4. Crono
3. Crash Bandicoot
2. Kratos
1. Dante

We knew IGN readers had a bias toward Dante, but we didn't realize it was such a prevalent one...More than 70% of you cried for the Devil May Cry badass, so let's hope the Big N is listening so that maybe, some day, we'll see Dante and the other fantastic, hypothetical four on this list see their day in the Brawl.

Stay tuned to Stars for more Smash Bros. coverage.

Why on earth would anyone want Kratos is Brawl?

If I could pick any 3rd party characters for Smash Bros., I'd go with the Ninja Turtles (I grew up with the original cartoon.), although they'd probably have to be a 4 in 1 character kind of like Pokémon Trainer is 3 in 1., Darth Vader, and Yoda.

Megaman wouldnt be a Samus clone. I mean if touch her power suit, he would have data on it. Than maybe increase the attack power of his Mega Buster.

Megaman would have been epic on there. I got Legends of Legends on Brawl. We got Mario, Link, Sonic, DK, Fox, Kirby and the list would go on. Megaman should have made it to brawl this suck so much. :bashhead: I wouldnt care what version of him made it he would have been EPIC still

That's not that bad of an idea. It's like in the original NES game where you could switch which Turtle you wanted whenever or where ever. Too bad the Ninja Turtles aren't video game characters though :(

Maybe if they get the Battle Toads though... oh wait :(

Too bad the Ninja Turtles aren't video game characters though :(Do you realize that you just stated an example from a TMNT video game then said the Turtles aren't video game characters? Why are you even mentioning that terrible first TMNT NES game? Talk about the great 2nd one or the godly third one (Why haven't they come to Virtual Console yet?:() The SNES and Genesis games were great, too, and even the first GameCube TMNT game based on the newer cartoon was good, although the 2nd GameCube one was terrible and kept me from getting the 3rd GameCube one. I'm not sure about the current-gen game based off of last year's CGI movie. Anyway, don't tell me the Ninja Turtles aren't video game characters.

It would have been nice to have Pac-Man in. His FS could be that everyone turns the color of the ghosts when Pac-Man gets a big dot in the normal game. If Pac-Man hit them, they would be sent flying around the screen, with damage and a chance of being sent down off the stage.

It would have been nice to have Master Cheif . Think about it, him duel weilding a Spartan Laser and Gravity hammer running around destroying everyone.

No, it means they were popular comic-book characters who were given their own shows and games. Like Spider-Man and Batman before them. They didn't originate from video games, so they aren't video game characters. Which is a requirement for the SSB series. Can you honestly not see and understand that?

Smash Bros. Wish-List: All Nintendo Edition
Stars scouts out ten potential Brawl-ers from the Big N.
by Phil Pirrello and Richard George

February 8, 2008 - With Super Smash Bros. Brawl a little over a month away, we here at Stars are as excited as you are to get our hands on some quality gameage. We've ranked the Vets, the Newbies, and the non-Nintendo brawlers that shoulda made the cut and hopefully will in a future Brawl.

Now, Stars goes to the Big N's vault of characters for our list of ten Smashers that should have not only made the most recent line-up, but should someday find their way into the next installment of Brawl.

As always, IGN Stars weighed several factors before committing to this list. We considered popularity, likelihood, potential game mechanics, fighting style and editor's preference. If there's a name or two on this list you love, or downright loathe, tell us all about it in the Comments section. And also vote for your favorite character in the poll below. Remember, this list is partially compiled by what you, the reader, want to see and play, so your vote counts.

Let's do this:

10. Bowser Jr./Shadow Mario

Bowser's son is a popular character from recent Mario games and seems like a logical inclusion, seeing as how Nintendo gives a lot of Brawl love to the Mario franchise as it is. Because the Mario franchise is well-represented, and because we have a soft spot for Bowser Jr.'s siblings (we're getting to that last part), we place the latest son of Bowser in the tenth spot. We'd like to see others outside the Mario sphere get their due. But that's not to say his potential moves (borrowed and complied from those of Bowser and Mario) wouldn't be fun.

9. Tom Nook

The devious, diabolical, sinister mastermind of retail and real estate, Tom Nook is the bane of all homeowners in the world of Animal Crossing. His character's passive origins and Sim-esque, dress-up world make him an unlikely candidate to pop up in a Brawl, but we like the idea of this raccoon getting body smashed by Bowser, or lit up by one of Snake's rockets.

8. Samurai Goroh

One of Falco's most infamous rivals and currently an Assist Trophy in Brawl, the character's potential contribution to the game (fighting-style wise) is worth giving Goroh a promotion to fighter. He would add considerable diversity to the game, and make many gamers happy in the process.

7. King K. Rool

We include Rool for the simple fact that it is time to expand the Donkey Kong universe, especially in regards to DK's role in the Super Smash franchise. We think the best way to do that – and keep fans happy – would be to elevate Rool from Donkey Kong nemesis to center ring fighter. If he ever gets his shot at a tight fight, we hope his brute, blunt-force fighting style is distinguishable enough from the likes of DK's, or else this character's potential would be wasted.

6. Geno

Ok, just pipe down already: We know Geno appeared in Super Mario RPG, a game made by Square Soft but published by Nintendo, so we (and others) consider it and the character Big N property. Now that that's out of the way, this wooden, Pinocchio-esque puppet would be a fun, unpredictable combatant. Geno is arguably the most popular character from RPG, and that popularity should carry over into a nostalgic and inspired Brawl someday.

5. Mewtwo

Three words: Bring him back. Mewtwo was in the last game, and most of us here at IGN felt that he should have stayed around for this next one. Hell, if Brawl can make room for three fraking Foxes, why not make way for this guy?

4. Rival Pokemon Trainer

An RPT would make for a great alternative to the game's current Pokemon Trainer, and thus a kick-ass rival for one of the game's most innovative characters. Nintendo would have to give RPT three new Pokemons to wield as a way to raise the stakes, and who they choose would make for excellent combat and Final Smash.

3. Midna

In Twilight Princess, Link gets cursed and turned into a little wolf. And Midna is this impish little thing who helps Link out on his all-fours adventure. Her controlling personality and shadow-based powers would bring some much needed unconventional game play to any Brawl. The possibilities of what Final Smash could come out of her wolf-riding ways are endless, and worth pursuing. She is one of the more interesting – and dynamic – characters to come out of the Zelda 'Verse, so, in short: Put Midna in the game.

2. Ridley

We only ask that this Metroid boss have a handicap of sorts, one that reduces his size to a manageable one (to make things fair) and hopefully save his ginormousness for a Cloverfield-worthy Final Smash. Currently, Ridley is a boss and not an opponent in the game. It would seem only logical to step up his presence and thus bring the game into a whole new level of offense. Despite Metroid's popularity, Samus is currently the only playable representative of the franchise big enough to do the games justice. (Zero Suit doesn't have the weight or impact for us, sorry, guys.) With that said, Ridley would broaden the Metroid range, much like Rool would do for DK.

1. Koopalings

Somehow, in between harassing Peach and discouraging Marion, Bowser found time to have a family. And to be clear, we are talking about the Original Seven, and not those that show up in Mario Party. Including all seven of his offspring would require some serious redefining of game mechanics – would we play with all seven simultaneously; could we only use just a few, or one? Regardless of how the controls work themselves out, Koopalings would prove just plain cool for the franchise to pull off. We suggest giving the brood some Mario defense here, some Bowser smash there, and let them unleash a Final Smash of a seven-fold Koopa body slam that turns even the baddest of Brawlers into road kill.

Nintendo dropped the ball on some characters and IGN just proved it. I mean, I've been calling for those characters since Melee came out, but no one listens to me. Each one of the Nintendo characters, minus Tom, would have made more sense than Wolf, ROB, or ZSS.

I would like to add Krystal to that list too...but what do I know compared to Nintendo?

COKTAL
February 10th, 2008, 03:27 PM
I was really hoping for Bowser Jr. to be in the game. He wouldn't be a clone of Bowser because he rarely ever uses the same moves as Bowser. He would have his brush, probably the same spin, and a few more moves away from Bowser.
Also Crazy, ZSS seems like a good addition to the game, seeing as Samus is the only character in the past 2. Atleast now it's more than just one set of moves for Samus.

Anyway, don't tell me the Ninja Turtles aren't video game characters.
The Turtles were Licensed, so technically they're not.

Mega Man at #1 for third party characters was not surprising. In fact, had Capcom not screwed Nintendo over with Resident Evil 4, Mega Man would've definitely been in the game.
I would rather see Ridley as a playable character than the Koopalings, however.

COKTAL

Ya, I don't see the koplings as a good smash group of characters, seeing that there are 7 and they've never been playable by my knowledge. I think Mega Man would have been a pretty good character but only playing 1 or 2 games, I could be wrong.
Think about it, if the date hadn't been moved, we would have the game right now. If so, I'd be playing, not spending my time here (who can blame me?) *pauses for a moment of silence because of today, Februrary 10th*

I agree with IGN that they should've kept Mewtwo. He wasn't a clone, so why'd they take it (the video games specify it as being genderless) out of Brawl? Its Final Smash could be a sphere of powerful psychic energy expanding from itself in all directions for a limited range.

Lucario is a Mewtwo clone, kinda (technically they just took everything about Mewtwo and made it better).

I think one of the requirements for appearing in Smash Bros is that they've had to appear on a Nintendo console at least once, which rules out Master Chief and Sephiroth. Cloud was technically in the GBA Kingdom Hearts game but if he gets included in a future Smash Bros game I will personally fist the person responsible with a set of cat claws.

Bomberman and Simon Belmont need to be in the next one, if they every make another one. A Tales character, especially Lloyd Irving, would be a kickass third-party character. Bowser Jr. also seem like he'd fit right in. Megaman would be pretty cool too I guess. Bringing Mewtwo back would be nice.

Ridley is way too big to be in as anything other than a boss. If I had to pick one Square character to put in the game, I'd rather have Crono than Geno. Krystal could be ok as long as she doesn't have a Landmaster.

Since we're on the "wish-list" topic, I'd say that I would personally like to have a generic Prinny, preferably one of Etna's, from the Disgaea series as a playable fighter. I could imagine Etna standing in the background like the PT threatening the poor thing in many ways if it ever lost the match and stuff like that. Other 3rd parties I'd like are Simon Belmont and one of the Battletoads, namely Pimple.

Perhaps Ridley was better off a boss, but the misclusion of K. Rool is most unfortunate. I think I would prefer him as a pirate.

PlayStation Team Ten: Super Sony Bros. Brawl
We rip-off Nintendo and create the ultimate fighter.
by IGN PlayStation Team

February 15, 2008 - Super Smash Bros. Super Smash Bros. Super Smash Bros. We don't know if you've looked around IGN.com lately, but it seems Nintendo's upcoming update to the storied Smash franchise has been getting a whole lot of press. There are character profiles, movies, screens, hands-on and even tidbits from Fran.

It's enough to make a Sony fan cry!

Don't get us wrong, we have nothing against Brawl. We're looking forward to it. It's just that Nintendo's trucking out all of its favorite characters for a rumble on Wii, and the PlayStation family is just chilling on discs across the country.

We've decided enough is enough. If Sony won't make a blatant rip-off of Smash with its favorite characters, we'll make our own list of the heroes and villains we'd want to see duke it out. Go ahead and read, but imagine the brawls happening in Sony-themed arenas and individual Sony Skill meters filling as each character performs successful attacks.

10) Patapons
From: Patapon
Sony Skill: Fever Fury

Why?: Yeah, they might be the newest kids on the block, but you can't deny the power of the Patapons. In their PSP game, they march fearlessly into battle and combine spears, arrows and axes to bring down enemies that are four times their size. Fierce warriors, the Patapon tribe would be a worthy addition to Super Sony Bros. Brawl as gamers would need to master the trademark drum beats to command their armies and work up to Fever Fury -- a special move that amplifies damage. Pata-pata-pata-pwned.

9) Liquid's Hand
From: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Sony Skill: Revolver Blast

Why?: Anyone who played Metal Gear Solid remembers how badass Revolver Ocelot was as he shot it up with Snake and twirled his pistols. However, when Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty showed up, we saw Revolver beaten by the most unexpected of foes -- Liquid Snake's hand. If those five digits have that kind of power, they need to be in this game. You'd select the hand as your fighter and then attach it to whichever character you wanted. The character would then talk like Liquid and have the brutal Revolver Blast finisher.

8) Sly Cooper
From: Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
Sony Skill: Crooked Cane Neckbreaker

Why?: Don't kid yourself -- Sly can throw bones. You don't get to be a world renowned thief without learning how to defend yourself. Using the grace Sly displayed in his multiple PlayStation 2 games, he'll dodge attacks, hit people in the head with his cane and even call in his Band of Thevies to deal out turtle-powered damage. When Sly's ready to hurl his opponents off the screen, he can snatch them with his crooked cane and send them flying.

7) Wander
From: Shadow of the Colossus
Sony Skill: Weak Spot Stab

Why?: With a sword and bow, Wander took down beasts that were larger than most buildings -- if that doesn't prove you deserve a spot in this brawler, we don't know what does. Our main man would pack his traditional weapons, and after wearing a foe down, the Sony Skill known as Weak Spot Stab -- the screen goes black and white except for a glowing location on a character where Wander can strike for an instant kill -- would go into effect.

6) Jak and Daxter
From: Jak Series
Sony Skill: Ottsel Smother

Why?: After pounding their way through three titles filled with Dark Eco, enemies and one-liners, Jak and Daxter are ready for the big leagues. Now, don't get your panties in a bunch, young reader. Daxter would sit on Jak's shoulder for most of the battle and just mouth off in the sort-of-funny/kind-of-annoying way while the big guy threw punches and switched back and forth between his suped-up alter ego, but when the Sony Skill meter was full, Jak would be able to hurl Daxter onto the opponent's face and smother him into submission.

5) Nariko
From: Heavenly Sword
Sony Skill: Blinding Sword Light

Why?: Nariko made her powerful debut fighting against the sinister legions of King Bohan. Casting her own life away, Nariko chooses to wield the Heavenly Sword, a blade of unparalleled power that drains the life of those who carry it. Nariko's Sony Skill, Blinding Sword Light, channels her energy into the Heavenly Sword, lengthening the blade into an iridescent beam of light. Unfortunately, this weakens the warrior for a time afterwards, but not without first causing tremendous damage.

4) PaRappa the Rapper
From: PaRappa the Rapper
Sony Skill: Mic Meltdown

Why?: Few rapping dogs have popped up on a console and captured as many hearts while rocking funky fresh beats as PaRappa the Rapper has. A PlayStation original, PaRappa's been pigeonholed into the rap industry for too long and is ready to break some skulls in Super Sony Brothers Brawl with punches, kicks and rhymes. When the Sony Skill meter is filled by hitting the correct combo/rap, PaRappa will swing his mic from its chord and blast foes into the ether.

3) Ratchet and Clank
From: Ratchet & Clank Series
Sony Skill: RYNO V

Why?: Ratchet and Clank -- the Lombax and cybernetic sidekick -- have been demolishing baddies in the name of justice for a long time. Equipped with massive amounts of weaponry, high-level electronics and a charming pair of pointy ears, Ratchet is one of the world's most renowned soldier mechanics. As for Clank, he can analyze his way out of any situation. In a time of need, Ratchet and Clank can unleash the power of the RYNO V and obliterate the competition.

2) Sweet Tooth
From: Twisted Metal
Sony Skill:Fender Bender

Why?: Sure, most of your nightmares involve Sweet Tooth running you down while he's in his ice cream truck, but this psychotic clown is just as deadly on foot. Aside from the standard punches and teeth jarring kicks, Sweet Tooth can chuck flaming tires and spit oil at will. When the Sony Skill meter is full, he can press a button on his trusty remote to have his truck roll through and squish the competition.

1) Kratos
From: God of War
Sony Skill: Slice and Dice

Why?: The man kills gods. That's going to make Kratos a pretty hot commodity in Super Sony Bros. Brawl. Packing his trusty Blades of Chaos, Kratos will brawl through the competition and string together the same insane combos fans have come to know. When his Sony Skill is ready, he'll launch an opponent into the air and lay waste with the blades. Bring an umbrella.

Seriously, this game would rock. Someone stop working on the next PSN/PlayStation Eye screensaver and get on this. Did we leave some people off the list? Of course -- Nathan Drake, Buzz, the robo-rabbit from Jumping Flash! and more were kicked around for this feature, but in the end fell into oblivion.

Who would you put in the game?

I don't believe a Sony themed fighter would be as enjoyable.

I don't think either but it would be interesting.

Sweet Tooth...:chuckle: That game was sweet.

The only characters I really wanted in Brawl that didn't get the cut were Midna (or Wolf Link) and Ashley. Ashley was largely wishful thinking, but Midna could have completly worked!

Kill Toon Link for Midna and Wolf or Falco for Ashley and I'd be ludicrously happy. Ah well. Just I'll just have to settle for what we got.
