The Eye in the Sky!
January 15th, 2008, 04:00 PM
1. Rush - Snakes and Arrows
Rush came back to form with an outstanding album that surpasses anything they've done since their prime in the early 80s. Radio hits, "Larger Bowl," "Spindrift," and the hugely successful "Far Cry" cemented the album as legit in the commercial world while songs like "Way the Wind Blows," "Armor and Sword," and "Main Monkey Business" prove Rush still has that edge they've had for over 30 years.
2. Nightwish - Dark Passion Play
With their old singer, Tarja Turunen gone, the band went in a different direction with more emphasis on melodies and male vocal integration with their new singer, Annette Olzon. Fans feared Nighwish was going to die but this album is arguably their best. Monster songs like "Bye, Bye Beautiful," "Amaranth," "7 Days to the Wolves," and the epic "Poet and the Pendulum" carry the album to the highest they've ever been.
3. Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos
There really isn't that much for me to say about this one other than it was exactly what a Dream Theater fan would expect: Epic length, premiere musicianship, and heavy doses of keyboards and Petrucci. "In the Presence of Enemies" are two amazing songs to open and close the album with social commentaries of the world all over their other songs. My favorite happens to be "Ministry of Lost Souls," which is a 15 minute masterpiece and a great summary of the band's talent.
4. Gamma Ray - Land of the Free 2
Technically it isn't out in America yet but Youtube has had it since the European release last month and I've been listening to it there. Finally, Gamma Ray has matched the original in terms of quality. "Into the Storm" is a great single for them with a great solo we haven't seen in a while. In fact, most of the album is fresh even though the subject matter is so overused. "Mother Earth" is one of the most intensely heavy songs ever and "Opportunity" is a direct homage to Iron Maiden as two riffs from their songs are played in the middle of it. A treat to metal fans that recognize them.
5. Kamelot - Ghost Opera
I really wish that this album was higher on my list. Black Halo was legendary, Epica was incredible, Karma was the start of their rise. Ghost Opera has some moments but is sort of a disappointment for Kamelot. That said, an average Kamelot album is still good. The title track, "Rule the World," "Human Stain," and "Silence of the Darkness" are just killer songs. The only problem is the less than stellar songs in the middle... but the band is so talented that they make up for it to save the album.
Worst album of the year:
Sonata Arctica - Unia
I hate that they did this. Reckoning Night was their previous album and it perfected power metal. Ecliptica was a tremendous album... Silence even had great moments. Unia just sucks. They turned pop with a terrible voice, no catchy music, and poor lyrics. They seemed like they just said "Hey, lets see if fans will still like us even if we put out the worst album ever." Well, it makes me sick and I hope they either quit music or go back to metal.

Exile on Mainstream, really? I'm a big matchbox twenty fan but I thought the album of "original material" was lame (with the exception of How Far We've Come). It seemed like they were forced contractually to put out another album of original material, so they wrote down the first four chords to pop into their head in order to get it finished as soon as possible.
Greatest hits disc was an A+, though.

They put all the best """"""old""""" songs on there and they put about 4 new ones.
But I agree, I would have rather them waited and had a whole big album of new songs.

The Crowing
January 16th, 2008, 08:48 PM
Explain.
For one, too many guitar solos. I love guitar solos, but half the ones on the album weren't needed. There were however, really great ones, ala, Gravemakers, End Complete III and IV. Also, I got a really big 80s vibe from about half the album, which I didn't really enjoy. Justice and Murder is by far my least favorite song they've ever done.
EDIT: That's not to say I don't love the album for it's gems. There's a bunch of great songs on it, but as a whole I don't like it nearly as much as their previous work.

Overall, a really great year. My reasons for liking most of these can be found in the other thread a few pages back. This year especially I delved a lot more into black metal than I usually do and found a few great gems (Wolves In The Throne Room, Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord, Walknut, Glorior Belli) and also some shoegaze/shoegaze-influenced music like Alcest, Ulrich Schnauss, Nadja, and The Angelic Process).

Same here. I too went way more into the black metal scene, though really just the experimental stuff. Two Hunters was a great album.

Yeah, I have their entire catalogue. The best part about them is that they're consistently good, and they put out multiple releases a year. This year alone they've done seven different albums. 4 full length albums (2 of which are rerecorded from earlier albums), 2 collaborations, and an EP.
If you enjoyed Nadja, I must recommend The Angelic Process - "Weighing Souls With Sand". Very, very similar in sound. The sad part is that they won't be releasing anymore albums because of some kind of injury the guitarist/mastermind sustained.
10. Tool - 10,000 Days (was that 07? I think so...)

Hissing Fauna Are You The Destroyer - Of Montreal was my favourite album of the year. I also loved 'It's a Bit Complicated' by Art Brut, and 'Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters' by The Twilight Sad. Neon Bible and In Rainbows were up there as well.
I've still got some stuff from 2007 to get around to, though. Digital Shades by M83, most pressingly.

I won't put Pyramids here because it came out extremely late
Let's see, what would make this list (no order)
Saves the Day - Under the Boards
Caspian - Four Trees (no doubt the best post-rock album of the year, possiby the best actual album too)
BTBAM - Colors
Mass Movement of the Moth - Outerspace (skramz, quite good)
The Kidcrash - Jokes (above)
Chemist vs. COmputer - Loki (great post-hardcore. Just an EP, but I expect great things from them)
Jazz June - Scars to Prove It (great album from an underappreciated midwest-emo band, represent)
Do Make Say Think - You, You're A History In Rust (if you haven't listened to them yet, get into them now. Very Explosions in the Sky-like, but better)
Maritime - Heresy and the Hotel Choir (no one from the Promise Ring could ever make a bad album)
Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank (Modest Mouse, enough said. Album gets a bit more credit than it deserves but the band is still ****ing amazing. Spitting Venom is one of their greatest songs)
Street Smart Cyclist - Lint Traps (yay, Cap'n Jazz-lit eis coming back)
Ted Leo/Rx - Living With the Living (Ted rules again with a great political record)
Pela - Anytown Graffiti (whoever said punk is dead hasn't listened to them yet.)

I just read through this thread again and noticed that no one mentioned Fear of a Blank Planet, which I believe could easily be one of the best albums of this year.

I don't like Steven's voice too much on Fear of a Blank Planet. But I agree, definately one of the best ones of last year.
