View Full Version : Anyone still play FE 8?

I seem to be the only one.

It's about the only FE that has the replay value that only an overworld and a post game can achieve. I'm still trying to max all my units' stats.

I played Ephraim Hard, so the trick required to get infinite swiftsoles is a bit iffy. However, once you get about two or three units to get 15 movement, you can get all the items worth a total of 9900 gold in one turn when entering Lagdou the second time using the swiftsole hard mode method (reset, enter ruins, waste 3 RNs, retreat and re-enter 6 times). I believe you get a Spear, a Brave Bow, and a Rune Sword. All three must be acquired by killing them on your turn - the enemy will switch to them and drop something worth less if you get within their attack range without killing them that turn.

So now I have much faster ways of getting gold than I once did, and I figured out how to get more swiftsoles. My team is nuts. Anamnesis says he already maxed all the stats of his units...how many of the rest of you have? There's something addictive about seeing all those green numbers in the unit list. :3

The only thing that wasn't maxed was move...When I got to the last chapter on Ephraim's Hard, only Joshua was 20/20....I played for difficulty, not for best stats D:

Yeah, I never could bring myself to go for perfect stats. There's more than enough replay value, but there aren't enough stat-up items present in the game to warrant trying to play like that.

If, on the other hand, you could BUY stat-up things like Speedwings (like you can in the Japanese version), then I'd still play to this day. Some of the characters are still really good without having to use them (READ: TANA), so parts of the game were still a nice little cruise.

You CAN buy stat ups. They are in the secret shops, and are always accessible after the game has been beaten, and you can travel around the map O:

You can buy stat-ups in the US version? I thought you could only buy promotion items in the US secret shops.

Avant-garde

Yep. You can buy them in the secret shops...They are split up, though. The only thing you cant' buy are swiftsoles, but Zeld... Hextator...Hectamatatortron?...v_V
....Biscuit above me has figured out the equation for having them dropped by enemies...

I didn't figure it out, I just looked it up (It's well hidden among the internets, though). No, wait, I think my first post here has info on it. Well anyhow, you can max any and every stat on every character by simply continuing to play after beating the game...in any mode.

Which I plan to do with Ephraim Hard. It's been 100+ hours and I'm only past halfway done, so I'll always have something to do when I'm bored for the next what, 5 years? v_V

I just realised I'd never actually finished it... So I went and found it (gotta love Google), now I'm at the point where you choose to go with Eirika or Ephraim. I'm going with Eirika.

Any advice on character selection? I avoided Seth to start with (he seemed like he'd turn out to be a Jeigan), but I'll see how he matches up to the cavaliers when they promote. Any tips?

He's the Jeigan, but he does pretty well.

Still, I was at 95 hours of gameplay before he leveled up the first time.

Franz makes an awesome Great Knight. I made Kyle into a Paladin and Forde into another Great Knight. I only really used Franz and flying units as far as mounted units go, prior to the endgame.

I don't think FE8 really HAS a Jeigan, Seth turns out as good as Franz or Forde v_V

Here's my party:

Ephraim (Great Lord: Lances)
Preferred Weapons: Lances
A: L'arachel
B: Tana

About as good with Lances as you can ask. The only gripe I have about him is that his Speed maxes out at TWENTY-FOUR. He could have easily reached 29, maybe 30.

Eirika (Great Lord: Swords)
Preferred Weapons: Swords
A: Tana
B: L'arachel

To be honest, Joshua sees a lot more play than she does. But she does get storyline.

Tana (Wyvern Knight: Lances)
Pierce: 20%: ignore enemy's defense
S: Lances
A: Eirika
B: Ephraim

I was going to use her as a Falcoknight, but the only other flying character I really considered was Cormag. And I kinda said no to him since Ephraim exists (although sometimes, having another flying character would be nice).

Amelia (General: Lances, Swords, and Axes)
Great Shield: 20%: ignore damage
Killer weapons
A: Ross
B: Ewan

I love this unit. She's so fast AND strong AND can take a hit AND can use 3 kinds of killer weapons.

Ewan (Druid: Dark Magic, Anima Magic, Staves)
S: Dark Magic
A: Tethys
B: Amelia

Could have turned out better, to be honest, but he's not too slow for my liking, actually.

Ross (Berserker: Axes)
+15% critical
S: Axes
A: Amelia
B: Lute

I like Berserkers. He's REALLY strong, kinda fast, but he comes with almost no skill. I ended up using all of the Secret Books I found on him, but he MURDERS stuff now.

Artur (Bishop: Light Magic, Staves)
Slayer: automatic triple damage to monsters
S: Light Magic
A: Lute
B: Joshua

What can you say, he's good at killing monsters. Can't take a hit from anything, but that's just how all of the monks are.

Colm (Rogue: Swords)
S: Swords

He doesn't really fit my support scheme, but a Rogue is always nice to have. Especially since I NEVER remember to buy Lockpicks. He's actually not a terrible fighter, either.

Gerik (Ranger: Bows, Swords)
S: Bows
A: Joshua
B: Tethys

This guy's godly. I thoguht he was gonna suck at first but I played with him and his Strength got up to 20 when he hit 20. His other level-ups were all pretty good so I stuck with him maingame, decided that he was gonna be my "S" for Bows (even though getting the S in Bows and not Swords is effing annoying), and ran with it.

L'arachel (Valkyrie: Light Magic, Staves)
S: Staves
A: Ephraim
B: Eirika

Levelling her up is THEEE most annoying thing in the world, but she gets good FAST once you get her promoted. Oh, and she got to read Ada's Tome (can't really remember the name of the maturity item right now).

Lute (Sage: Anima Magic, Light Magic, Staves)
S: Anima Magic
A: Artur
B: Ross

I like sages. I like Lute. She'll entertain you with her Supports as well (main reason I kept her around instead of just using Cormag and giving L'arachel Anima). Oh, and she can definitely take care of herself. I don't know whether it's just me, but she seems to have REALLY high evasion for someone with a ridiculously low Con stat.

Joshua (Assassin: Swords)
Silencer: OHKO chance = 1/2 the percentile chance of critical
Shamshir
A: Gerik
B: Artur

Probably my favorite unit. Give him Lockpicks and he can do his thing. Give him a Shamshir and he kills everything known to man. Including Generals.

Tethys (Dancer: no weapon)
A: Ewan
B: Gerik

I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS, SHE IS A GOOD UNIT AND I MAKE FREQUENT USE OF HER.

First promoted unit you get is more or less Jeigan. Seth and Titania are just Jeigan minus the suck.

Avant-garde
January 21st, 2008, 01:11 PM
But...that defeats the purpose of calling them "Jeigan."
v_V
They're just promoted units that leech experience until later. MArcus was a Jeigan. He never got good as such. Titania and Seth are some of the better units in the game. >_>
Don't make me bust out the S ranks. No, not the gamefaqs one, because, as I said, the only official tier list is for S rank purposes ONLY. Anything else is but a clusterfvck of favoritism. :D

Gotta keep the quote alive, don't you?

I messed up that rep I was giving you, just to let you know.

A "Jeigan" is what made me restart my FE game the first time... Marcus was really only good for holding key points early in the game.

Mattimeo

I worked out how to deal with Jeigans and other useless units... Trade all their weapons to someone who will eventually be able to make productive use of them, then use them as a meat shield... that way they don't steal any experience either...

Worked well with that traitor Orson in Ch 5x, anyway...

dre
January 22nd, 2008, 12:56 AM
Yeah, that works pretty well .. other uses for Marcus/Jeigan include:

Shopping bitch. When you don't wanna waste a valuable turn because an enemy is right next to your cleric but you do need to shop, this unit fits the bill just fine.

Rescue-and-runs are great uses for these otherwise jobless guys. Say you have your main Lord battling a boss and (s)he doesn't quite make the kill. Take your otherwise-useless Paladin, make the rescue and run, and have someone drop your Lord off. Heal him/her up and they're good to go next round. You know .. it's either that or you have to hope that the boss doesn't hit your Lord on their own turn. And y'all know how that goes ..

Marcus is nearly top tier on the official S rank tier, because his usefulness through the majority of the game in weakening the enemy before someone else gets the kill. :D

Have you ever S ranked a game, Steven? Like, at the end of a game, they gauge how good you were? The S rank tier is the 'tier list' for the characters who are useful to obtaining S rank. Unlike gamefaqs, the official one (On Velthomer, most likely) is heavily debated, and includes arguments not limited to "Gekri sux cuz he wars pirpl"

Sorry, but FESS isn't an offical represenitive of Nintendo, thus their tier lists are no more offical than GFAQs. And hardly anybody [Except for idiots who dont know any better] make arguments base on personal bias or experience. And FESS contradicts their own basis for tiers numerous times.

"K lets not rank teh Hector cuz hes teh lord and all"
"K lets rank Ike cuz he is teh uber sexmuffin and hes strong lol"

And GFAQS lists aren't heavily debated? They're debated day in and day out. RD's Tier topic has about 5000 posts. Yes, 5000. Not heavily debated my RNG screwed Kieran.

I S ranked Hector's Hard Mode. What's your point?
I see what you're saying, BB, But you are missing the point. I say S ranks are what the Tier listing is FOR. Gamefaqs, though I may be slightly outdated as I was removed from the internet for a few months, had, as the majority of their 'debating' posts, spam. If what I assume from past experiences at Gamefaqs is true, then no less than 80% of those '>5000' are spam.

MightyZagaro

" I say S ranks are what the Tier listing is FOR"

Uh, okay? That doesn't make FESS's lists any more offical, or GFAQ's any less.

"Gamefaqs, though I may be slightly outdated as I was removed from the internet for a few months, had, as the majority of their 'debating' posts, spam."

lolno. Try actually reading these posts before you just make crap up. There's a few idiots that pop in now and then, but for the most part GFAQS debaters think things through the right way.

Take this to PM, yeah? I'm sure Rick appreciates the activity, but I don't think he appreciates the off-topicness.

F*ck your S rank sh*t. I had an A in Lyn Easy Mode! Come on! Lyn makes a secret cameo in FE8 anyway.

Well, not Lyn, but Titania. Titania is the name of Vanessa's pegasus. I found that rather amusing.

Anything FESS related is automatically unofficial because the place is run by knuckleheads. It is unfortunate that this is not an opinion, but rather, a provable fact.

Yes, we know that they wronged you for what was officially 'spam,' and wouldn't let your code be taken down by yourself. That doesn't make them any more or less credible in this argument.
I will say, however, that the FE5 tier thread I went to at gamefaqs(as per BB's link) is a lot different than I remember other threads being...Like the FE8 thread v_V Gheb fanfics abounds...bad for fragile little minds, yes.

On the topic of FE8, are the Super Trainee classes really all they're cracked up to be? I always made Amelia a general and Ewan a druid (Ross counts for sh*t), but BB brought up playing the japanese version and always using super trainees. I've never bothered with them.

Oh, and 100% support conversations on all of the US GBA releases. Nyeh.

Super Trainees were cut horribly from the JP version. I prefer Generals, Berserkers, and Druids, myself.

I never use the post-promote (or "Prepromotes" as some people prefer to call them) you start with even if they turn out rather good later, because I don't want an experience leach and by the time I leveled everyone close to being promoted I've already grown attached to too many other units so I don't pick them up. So it's not really that I don't like them, just the way the game is set up and how I'm set in my ways.

FE8 was fun, I got to the forest level in Hard I think, and when it comes to tiers and stuff I'm clueless.
