View Full Version : Tell us about your favourite band
Civil Disobedient
July 1st, 2006, 03:39 PM
Use this thread to tell us about your favourite band. The idea is to expose people to music they normally wouldn't listen to, and ask about bands that sound similar to their favourites.
Rules:
Choose ONE band.
Put in some effort. More than 4 words description please.
Tell us a little bit about the band and why you like them.
Post links to mp3s, websites etc.
_____________________________
La Quiete are probably my favourite band. They're an italian DIY screamo/hardcore band who have been around for a while and are about to tour the US with Phoenix Bodies.
They're the only band i've felt compelled to own their entire discography, including compilations, on vinyl.
I've seen them live twice, once when they toured the UK a few years back, and again this year when I travelled down to Leeds to see them.
Yeah they scream a whole lot (although the newer stuff is less abrasive vocal-wise), but they have tons of melody too.
Give them a listen if you want to hear some real screamo, and not some watered down commercial tripe.

my favorite is Creed and/or Alter Bridge. Along with Matchbox 20. Im not going to write a long review but go look Matchbox 20's music. It is like regular rock not hip hop or metal or any othe Crap.
I think people will like them.

I reiterated:
Don't worry Civil and Freakish. Your opinions are the only right ones here. Nobody listens to anything but the metalcore bands you don't like so you say they are bad. Forgot the notion of being opinionated because the fact that you decided it is all that matters. While we're on the topic of that I'll make my opinion clear that I think emo music blows. THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSS MUCH! Except Joy Division, but seeing as you like to be unpredicatable with you "true" emo bands, I have no way of knowing if my tiny mind can even grasp to hold the idea of what fits into what. Did I mention genres are opinions too?
I'm going to go back to enjoying my NOFX CD now.
Freakish
December 31st, 2007, 08:00 PM
If you like NOFX you should listen to the Lawrence Arms. Much, much better band.
Genres of music have the least leeway for opinion on the sole purpose that they are based upon musical theory. While you can continue to think that you can classify any band under any genre, you would be wrong. By the way, Joy Division (while a fun band to listen to, and Control was a great ****ing movie) is not emo.

Genre of music is all opinion. You cannot argue that. One man may think Stevie Ray Vaugh is bluesy but another might think he has a funky sound. Think about it, just because a majority rules something does not make it a fact. The only thing that really makes facts is actuality.
Definitions of fact
1. something that actually exists; reality; truth: Your fears have no basis in fact.
2. Something known to exist or to have happened: Space travel is now a fact.
3. A truth known by actual experience or observation; something known to be true: Scientists gather facts about plant growth.
4. Law. Often, facts. An actual or alleged event or circumstance, as distinguished from its legal effect or consequence
Nothing in there about majority ruling or musical theory.
Freakish
January 4th, 2008, 04:46 PM
But musical theory is...fact. Its how music is composed. How can it not be fact? As the fact that musical theory fits into the 4th definition of fact that you just posted proves you wrong. You can continue to think that genre is opinion but you would be wrong, just like every single music publication today. God I hate people like you who believe the fact that just because you have an opinion on something, you have the right to state it without having any justification for it. There's not even any justification that genre of music is opinion because all the facts are on my side. If you can come up with a legitimate counter-example, then maybe, just maybe I'll listen. But until then, you need to stop trying to play with the big boys.
One more thing: If you want to see an example of musical theory, watch "Amadeus," its all explained right there when Salieri looks at the sheet music for the opera Amadeus is doing and says it can't work until he looks at the theory behind it and realizes how amazing it really is.

If genres are such a clandestein thing then why is their continual debate over whether Van Halen is hard rock? Or ever whether Primus is funky? Or over just what the hell Radiohead is? How can it be fact if it contradicts itself?
Freakish
January 4th, 2008, 09:21 PM
People don't look at music theory when they try to define bands. Or you have a band change its sound on an album, thus people are confused over what to call them. I'll use Hot Cross as an example. Their first album and two EPs( Cryonics, Fair Trades and Farewell, A New Set of Lungs respectively) are both screamo albums (real screamo too). Their latest album, Risk Revival, is a post-hardcore album (a rather ****ty one at that too). I'd generally consider Hot Cross an emo band (screamo and emo are interchangable in this case as the musical thoery is the same except for the vocals), as thats where a majority of their albums lie. If you want to have end-all be-all discussion, then you cannot define bands as genres but rather their respective albums. Still no opinion in the matter either. Anything else you'ld like answered?

Not really. I mean I guess you are technically right I won't be stubborn here. But it doesn't make your generated pessimism any more appealing. Music shouldn't be about slandering other peoples taste or trying to constantly apply labels to everything (Even if it is musical theory). It should just be about listening to what you enjoy and being able to share that without being ruled off by overbearing opinionated cracks. There's a big difference between saying "Eh I don't really like them" and calling a band ****ty. People don't demean your music (Save myself. I did earlier) so what gives you the right to demean theirs? I guess that's all I wanted you to see really. I have no clue if you will but I openly admit defeat where defeat is do I suppose.
Edit: Also I just found some hypocrisy.
Quote You: God I hate people like you who believe the fact that just because you have an opinion on something, you have the right to state it without having any justification for it.
Quote you: Yeah its a real damn problem here. Everyone here listens to the same generic metalcore ****. Tough to talk good music here anymore considering very few here can even namedrop real emo bands. I kinda miss that here
Enjoy, and have a good day.

Hmm this is a moderatly hard question to ask for me. There are bands that I really like and cant decide such as Children of Bodom, Lumsk (I think thats how its spelled), Cradle of Filth, Amon Amarth, Nightwish, DragonForce (Just a few songs) and bands/people like Frank Sinatra, Queen, The Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Aerosmith, Metalica, Kansas, Iron Maiden, Flogging Molly, Audioslave, and The Ramones. All good bands and there are others but I am having a blond moment and cant remember.
Yeah that is way more then one.

At the moment and for past couple of years, one of my constant top 5 bands is Bear vs Shark. If I had to nominate all over again I would have nominated them and their album Right Now You're in the Best of Hands when we were doing those competitions. They're just exactly what I want from music. Amazing melodies, good vocals, good lyrics, audible yelling and a bit of variety. I can't pick a favorite song but if you buy the CD I guarantee you'll find something you like to get you started.
I know I've seen a few other people on here who've pimped this band and I need to hear so more positive feedback to restore my faith in humanity.
The greatest tragedy is that they're broken up but what can you do?

Nightwish, the symphonic metal sound is something that not many people in my area listen to, which allows me to listen to it without a bunch of kids saying things like, "OMG that song is awsome!!!!!!!!" and I just generally like music from Finland, Hanoi Rocks(yes the band was formed before I was born), HIM(not as much since Darklight, too many kids that don't realize they have been around longer, and that Love Metal or Razorblade Romance are better), and 69 Eyes(though most kids don't realize Lost Boys is isn't their only great song, I like the song Gothic Girl more than Lost Boys). I guess I went on a bit of a tangent.
Anyways I just like the the sound, and lyrics that Nightwish delivers in every song.

Over the years my tastes in music have changed I still love Millencolin but for the two/three years I've constantly listening too mae.
Mae is an Acronym for multi-sensory aesthetic experience. The MAE theory was developed by drummer, Jacob Marshall when he attended Old Dominion University in Virgina. They've turned out three studio albums since '03 and and one b-side rarities album.
They have an alternative rock sound, heavily influenced by weezer and the beatles. Instead of the usual pianist as a gimmick sound of modern rock mae uses the piano to it's full potential encorporating it on every song. Dave Elkin's vocals are pleasure to the ears. The man has perfect pitch and you can tell. When Elkin's sings he pours his soul into the lyrics and you can feel every ounce of conviction into every word.
Their first album,Destination: Beautiful was a charming little disc released on tooth and nail records. It has quite a few love songs along with the self searching and ponderous undertones of early emo acts like Sunny Day Real Estate, Saves the Day and Something Corporate. Key Tracks: Summer Time, Sun, Soundtrack for our Movie, Skyline Drive.
Second Album The Everglow is a concept album that tells the story of someone journeying to find love, understanding and comfort in a dark world. Each song bleeds seamlessly into the next. Every song on this album is worth listening over and over. Caution: If you are to listen to this CD listen to it beginning to end before skipping around, this album is an experience.
The Everglow takes on a heavier sound with more guitar and heavier piano leads.Key Tracks: The whole Album! Anything, Cover Me, Ready and Waiting to Fall, Painless, It's so Close but we're so far away.
Destination: B-sides is as it states a B-sides record with acoustic and live renditions from the previous albums. Key Tracks: Sun(acoustic), Tisbury Lane (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!), Giving it Away(live), This Time is The Last Time(wave remix).
The Third and latest Album Singularity is a great album(despite not being favored by early mae fans) It marks Mae's first release on a major lable and further exploration of their sound. Pulling from early nineties releases like the Smashing Pumpkins, Matthew Sweet and pulling further back to the beatles and the who. Key Tracks: Crazy 8's, Release Me, Telescopes, Reflections, Rocket, Last Transmission1 & 2(hidden tracks), Waiting.
I've seen mae live six times and counting and every time they get better and better. Mae is one of the few bands out there is that is better live than they are on record, they have compelling energy and nonstop creativity while experimenting with song structures live. They always play an encore.

I really like Papa Roach. Through out their career they havent had the whole mainstream hit that alot of bands get... but even when they had flop cds they stayed together toughed it out and made better music. A real band can tough through the flop records. their first record Infest went multie platinum and had big hits like "Last Resort" " between Angels and insects" "Blood Brothers" " Broken Home". Infest was really that album that kinda brings you through them hard times in life when everything is Sh*T. The Next album is Lovehatetragedy and damn was that a flop. But they changed their sound and they actually have a few good songs... off of that album check out "time and time again" and "she loves me not". The Next Album was Getting Away With Murder. This album showed the move from the nu Wave Rap core style to a more hard rock. The big hit songs on this album where " getting away with murder" and "Scars" but my personal favorite is " Do Or Die" and " Blood". GAWM is showing that a band can change and be great and alot of the songs are great pump up songs to get pumped up for working out. The next album they made was The paramore sessions. They made the album in the famous paramour mansion in callifornia. The album has many great songs on it like " too be loved..." " Reckless" " No More Secrets" " Time is running out" " the fire" " SOS" " The Addict". This album had a rekindle of the old Nu Wave style in it for a few songs. The CD is kinda more of a Cd you would listen to at a party but they can also pump you up. Their next CD is titled Metamorphosis and is due out August 26th. The band got a new drummer for the album and are touring Crue fest. If you like Buck cherry, My Chemical Romance, or pretty much anything that is rock then you will most likely like papa roach. If You like Rap Music check out infest first because it has more of the Rap core style to it.

I love Muse and Flight of the Conchords, but my favourite ever band is Radiohead.
Creep blew my mind when I first heard it. It was so out there, so unconventional and so wierd that it won me. Optimistic has some of the greatest vocals ever, and Paranoid Android had that brilliant electronic sound.
If you don't like most of the Top 40 crap (not to diss anyone or anything) that goes on today, Radiohead is great for you.

White Zombie.
In a time when all the other bands were down at the mouth and singing about the hardships of real life, White Zombie was out talking about horror and sci-fi sh*t, put out some of the grooviest tunes ever, with virtuoso brilliance from each member of the band (on La Sexorcisto, mostly).
There is a whole sub-culture who are totally into underground Zombie tracks and I'm very happy to be a part of that community. I can't wait for the entire discography comes out with every single track they've ever worked on.

I'll probably get bashed for this, but I'm a huge fan of John Mayer. Most people lable him for his acoustic pop songs. Stuff like "Your body is a wonderland" and "Daughters". Which are songs I like, but his recordings go much farther than that.
His first two releases "Inside wants out" and "Room for Squares" were mostly acoustic albums. Although his guitar work is impressive on them. His second major lable record "Heavier Things" experimented with jazz and soul, and even some alt rock.
He did a live album in 2005 titled "TRY!" with Steve Jordan on drums and Pino Palendino on bass. Some of his best solo's are on this album, which consisted of mostly blues. His 3rd album "Continuum" was mostly soul and blues. While it had one acoustic song titled "Stop This Train". If you've never heard of him you should check some of his lesser known stuff out. He's byfar my favorite guitarist

My favorite band has got to be The Killers.
They helped to take alternative rock into mainstream society with hits like "Mr. Brightside" and "Read My Mind". IMO Brandon Flowers is without a doubt one of the greatest songwriters of our generation. He writes songs that are catchy, as well as have a deep meaning to it.
Not to mention they own live. Or that they have a video where they are just hanging out in Tokyo having a good time which they shot before a concert on the spur of the moment.[video is "Read My Mind" for those interested.]

Some pretty self explanatory ones are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and The Who.
Some other ones are Muse, because of they play so many different types of songs, and Mathew Bellamy is a total beast at songwriting.
Modest Mouse: Isaac Brock is a great songwriter and their music does have a meaning behind it. Always one of my favorites.
Foo Fighters: I just recently started liking them but I love them now. Dave Grohl is just awesome.
