Whether it's from a movie, or television show, whatever, whats your favorite soundtrack?
I just got The O.C. Soundtrack, all the discs, and have to say that it's the best out there. Great assortment of tunes, and lots of mint tracks and new bands that I'd never heard of. The California "remix", by mates of State is one of my favorite songs, as well as Forever Young, and Hide and Seek. I'm also a tad ashamed to say that I'm a sucker for the High School Musical soundtracks as well on occasion.
Another one off of the top of my head is the Forest Gump soundtrack. Goes so well with the movie and lots of fun karoake songs there too.

The Forrest Gump soundtrack IS a great one. Also, surprisingly, the 1990-whatever Clueless soundtrack is pretty rad. Let's seeeeee... The Wedding Singer has a lot of 80's awesomeness....
My most recent favorite is the soundtrack for Lars & The Real Girl. It's all instrumental, but MAN is it awesome.
And though I'd protest if you tried to make me watch the show, from what I understand, the OC has done a pretty good job of bringing some really good lesser known bands into the lime light. Bravo for that. Artists like Imogen Heap, Mates of State et al deserve some attention.

Hmm...Well the Resident Evil: Apocalypse Soundtrack is definately my favorite because of all the great songs. But the Transformers soundtrack has one of my favorite songs (This Moment by Disturbed) so thats not very far behind.

Forrest Gump and Almost Famous are great for their classic rock soundtracks. Kill Bill has a good soundtrack with a good mix of contemporary music, some textbook Shawscope style music, and some great Ennio Morricone splashed in for the western mood. Then again, almost all Tarantino soundtracks kick ass.

That Thing You Do (completely original)
Dazed and Confused (all those awesome 70s songs in one movie . . . SWEET!)
Across the Universe (Beatles songs covered beautifully)

I'll throw in The Big Lebowski as well. There's a ton of really cool songs even if it did leave a few out.

I'll be the typical person to throw in the Empire Records soundtrack. The whole score, really, since there are great songs in the movie that aren't on the soundtrack.
The Eye in the Sky!

Maybe just for the main theme, I have to mention Jurassic Park. I get shivers whenever I hear it play. Ghostbusters also falls into that category.
As for entire movie, I'd be hard-pressed to find something better than Walk the Line or any Star Wars film.
Special honorable mention to the Simpsons Movie for turning their little cartoon theme into a bombastic orchestra performance with a little Green Day added in. They really created a mood.

The Punisher Soundtrack is second to none. I have it and it's just a bunch of amazing songs done by even better bands. Check it out.

The Matrix has a great soundtrack.
Sweeney Todd is rather different considering that the whole movie is a musical. The soundtrack is awesome though. :)

I really liked the soundtrack for "Hackers". Some good smooth guitar rock, some electro from what I remember. Good, easy listening.
Also worth a mention is "Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas". You got: Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash", coupla Jefferson Airplane tunes, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", Beck, The Yardbirds, Bob Dylan, the list of sheer quality just goes on. A special mention goes to "One Toke Over The Line" by Brewer and Shipley. What a class tune that is, I love it! If you're into rock n roll and the whole 60s drug culture this is the film for you! :link:
Also you obviously have The Who's "Tommy".

Ironically, I find the best soundtracks are the ones that have their own identity. This means they stand alone well, without the emotional and dramatic context of the film.
Period films tend to lack here, as their soundtracks play out like a 'best of' album from whenever they are set. I like the music in Dazed And Confused for example, but I'd never buy the soundtracks since they offer nothing new.
The best ones are mostly original, feature indie/lesser-known artists, or exclusive tracks. Some that come to mind are:
The Tao Of Steve - great quirky songs by indie artists.
I Am Sam
Across The Universe - two great albums of Beatles covers.
The Virgin Suicides - [score by Air] a great moody original score by electronica band Air, featuring the fantastic "Playground Love".

Sweeny Todd for the great arrangements and ability to make a musical without wanting me to kill myself.
Juno for the great indie rock that they used. Seriously, see the movie and buy the soundtrack.
Almost Famous for the amazing rock soundtrack.
Forrest Gump, not just for the rock, but "The Feather Theme" by John williams is beautifully written.
Hedwig and The Angry Inch had an amazing soundtrack; all original rock songs. Listen to it with an open mind, though.

But isn't that pretty much the only song that's played throughout the movie? ;) Over and over and over again

The soundtrack to "Singles" is the most badass soundtrack ever. First of all it has a bunch of hidden jems not on most albums. Birth Ritual by Soundgarden anyone? And, it has this badass acoustic version of spoonman that I love.

I hole-heartedly agree.
The Pan's Labyrinth one was amazing too. An entire soundtrack based off of one lullaby. Brilliant.

Oh YES. Thank god someone knows it. "Dead Bodies" is one of my favorite pieces of music of all time.
I love a lot of the music in Lost in Translation, but it's not quite as cohesive.

True, the score um...'revisits' the melody for "Playground Love" a few times with variations. :P There are some other notable tracks though; Tom mentioned "Dead Bodies" which is like a rush of emotion with the theme of 'urgency'.

I also agree. The soundtrack for O Brother, Where Art Thou? is fantastic, with one glaring example. I absolutely hate that "In The Highways" song, it makes me want to throttle cute things. In my own personal hell, that song is on repeat.

although I think it may not be up most people's alleys around here, I really liked the soundtrack to The Holiday.

The Island. Ever since I I saw this thread I was trying to remember which film it was, and there you have it... My Name Is Lincoln is especially nice. Also The Thin Red Line... the trailer alone has better music than just about any other movie ever. Melanesian Choirs are clearly awesome.

Agreed. Frou Frou, Cary Brothers, Iron and Wine, The Shins...can't get much better.
I love the fact that Cary Brothers also did a song for Zach Braff's "The Last Kiss" or whatever. I think the song was "Ride"

Forrest Gump, not just for the rock, but "The Feather Theme" by John williams is beautifully written.
The "Feather Suite" you speak of is actually the Forrest Gump Suite and it is written by Alan Silvestri.
As for favorite soundtrack, most recently i would agree with many of you that Across the Universe, with nearly all Beatles covers is an amazing work.
