Here's the scoop. I was running late on my daily routine of getting to work today. I was parked outside of my friends house where I'd left my uniform which was also located about 8 blocks from said job. So I'm speeding through back alleys and side-roads going 55 in a 35 because I'm a very skilled high-speed driver. Well, since I hate driving without music and my station wasn't coming in I just flicked on the CD player because I knew I had left a disc in. Low and behold seconds later the opening acoustic ballad to "Fight Fire With Fire" comes on and I fall in love with Ride The Lightining all over again. As I roll over bumps and screech around turns my mouth forms the words "Do onto others as they'd done to you, but what the hell is this world coming too" in perfect rhytmic motion with the song beat. My adrenalines kickin' and my foot is lead. By the second verse I'm completely sold by the incredible Metal essence of Metallica, a band so metal they have the word embedded in their name. So as I sit here whistling softly to Trapped Under Ice, I ask you, what is the greatest Metallica album? My opinion... We all know where that falls. Their second album. Cliff Burtons finest bass work and the incredible, pulsing thrash of "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Creeping Death", "Call of Ktulu" and various others has me sold. As ****ing heavy as **** as Master of Puppets is, (As well as how much I love Disposable Heroes) and as consistently reinforced as the perfect song structure and breakdowns on ....And Justice for All are (Seriously, listen to not just the songs, but specifically the breakdowns. They are flippin' incredible. I cite Blackened and Shortest Straw as starter examples), and as close to perfect as Kill 'Em All is, I still love Ride The Lightining best.

So go forth now and tell me what your own personal best Metallica album is.

Tough call. I like all the their first 5 albums (don't hate me for liking the Black Album) Kill 'em All is a strong album but not my favorite. You make a strong case with Ride The Lightning and every song on it is really quite amazing. Master of Puppets does have a couple of weaknesses near the end but the first 6 tracks are some of their best, Battery, MOP, and Welcome Home Sanitarium are probably 3 of the best Metallica songs. ...And Justice For All was recently my favorite album but some of the tracks just don't seem like Metallica since there is no Burton. The Black album is definately underrated, it isn't as strong as the others but go back and listen to Through the Never and The God That Failed and you will understand why I still like that album. But I think I'll have to say that Ride the Lightning is the best album, it has the least weaknesses.

I'd have to go with Ride The Lightning as well. The Black Album is a close second though. For me Ride The Lightning has the most power behind it with songs like Fight Fire With Fire and Creeping Death. I must say though that i hate Fade to Black and Call of Ktulu just bores me, but other than that it's a great album. Thier worst St. Anger.

I'd go with Master Of Puppets myself, with Ride The Lightning running a close second.

It's a hard choice though, Metallica is fairly inconsistent.

Without a doubt, Master of Puppets is my favorite/best album.

Incredibly heavy, beautiful, lots of great classic rif***e, and Hetfield sounds at his best.

Not one bad song on there from where I sit.

Leper Messiah is a terrible song.:P

I love Puppets. Problem is, it's lost its novelty, in my mind.

My personal favourite is Justice, but I do agree and admit that Puppets is the best.

I like Master of Puppets as a whole better than any of Metallica's other albums, but ...And Justice For All has a couple of my favorite Metallica songs on it. And personally, I never understood why people gave St. Anger so much sh*t. By no means is it my favorite and it isn't like I listen to it often, but I don't find it fair that people make it out to be this giant failure.

St. Anger would be an absolutely amazing album coming from any up-and-coming nu-metal band, or whatever. Anyone but Metallica, basically. They dropped the ball on that one. That's why it's a massive failure.

Master Of Puppets, though admittingly I'm not a HUGE Metallica fan. Black album would be my second. I pretty much stopped listening to them after the Black album.

Sh*t! The music forum still has threads where people talk about real music??? A pleasant surprise.

I would have to say Master of Puppets as well. Hetfield's rhythm was absolutely amazing. Beautiful melodies leading up to amazing metal. Everything just worked so well. Ride the Lightning takes second place for me, followed by Justice. I don't hate the Black Album as much as many other people I know. If you comapre it to what followed, I think it's closer to the good than the bad.
And personally, I never understood why people gave St. Anger so much sh*t.
First I looked at the statement and said 'What?', then I saw your username and it all made sense :D

...And Justice for All definitely. love Frayed End of Sanity, though haven't listend to it in a while.

can't stand Kill'em All... Hetfeild sounds like a girl, though oddly- he sounded more masculine in Kill'em All than he did in St. Anger.

Megadeth is still better.
