How to...fly? help?

okay for all of you who have probably already beasted the game and can play it blindfolded, please don't make fun of me. and i know this is probably a stupid question, but i'm having a REALLY hard time keeping mario in the air when he's got a cape. (just in case, this is for Super Mario World). but i just...can't do it. i guess because i'm not really sure how. i know how to get him going and get him in the air. but i can't KEEP him in the air. i've seen a video of a guy playing, so of course, i know it can be done. but HOW!?
help please. (i'm probably hitting the wrong buttons or something.)

ok, its kinda hard to explain, you fly in the air, and when he makes his cape into a circle, the press back on the control pad. you should float in the air a little, repeat when going down, its more of a hover since you lose more altitude than you gain...
just press the back on the directional pad when he is hold his cape in a circle midair.

acually its easy to stay in the air >.<
u just press the back button every half second and u go higher and higher =D
