If you have a wireless router, you don't need anything extra. If you don't, you need a USB Access Point.

A router is a thing which computers use to connect to the internet. A wireless router is a router with no wires (like no wai). The USB Access Point is what you use if you don't have a wireless router.

Alright, first off, to battle someone far away, you need a wireless router. The wireless router is the wireless thing:-\ that you use to connect to the internet (like Cheese Warrior pefectly explained.) You have to set up your DS connection to that router if you want to trade or battle. I don't know much about the USB thing so I won't tell you false information about it.

The GTS, this is something you also need a router for. You can offer Pokes in here and ask for a trade. Once you leave your Pokemon there, other people can trade you the pokemon you asked for, for the Pokemon you stored in the GTS. Just go back on to the GTS to check if your Pokemon got traded.

Wireless router. if you have wireless internet, you obviously have a wireless router.
If you don't have wireless internet, you don't have the router and need the Nintendo WiFi USB plug. The plugs are like... $35.
