i just got a desktop wireless adapter. i was only getting 60% signal strength at first, so i moved the computer right next to the router and now have 100% signal strength. However, i get a "limited or no connectivity" message that pops up. when i click the bubble, I get this message. "the network did not assign a network address to this computer." how do i fix that?

i have an hp pavilion running windows xp media center. the router is a belkin wireless-g 802.11g (adapter is 802.11g).

You should probably check to be sure the router's firmware is current and also that the wireless network is configured properly. You'll want to access the router's web interface. This is usually done by typing the default gateway into a browser and using the factory default login (if you've never configured the router before).

You need to make sure that the router's DHCP server is enabled (this is the service that assigns IP addresses to client computers).

it ended up being that i was given the wrong password. that fixed it but now i have a new problem. i lose connection quite often and it's annoying. my computer is about 50ft from the router (a belkin) on the same floor level and it shouldn't be a problem at all. which is more likely to be the culprit? the belkin router or my netgear card?

It could easily be a combination of both, but this is why I initially suggested that you examine your router's configuration via the web interface. If you do not know how to do this, we'll guide you through the process.
