once you have started the game, you pick your starter. once done, you start building a team. do you first plan to get a:

-pokemon from the water

-pokemon that lives on land

-pokemon that flies

It basically depends on your starter pick,
If it's a water type, I wouldn't waste my time catching another water-type
And the same goes with grass and fire.

I catch one of each of all the new unevolved Pokémon I can as soon as I reach their area.

I plan a team that will defeat the gym leaders, the E4, my rival and team Galactic.

[the E4 bit didn't work, I coulden't beat them]
So train alot more than I did.[I didn't train very much]

I first plan to get whichever member of my planned team is caught in the area closest to where I start. I would hope that goes without saying. -.-

If I'm playing a new generation game for the first time, I catch whatever new I ever encounter. Then I choose my favourites and continue training. That way, I can learn many things about abilities, weaknesses, moves(ets) and such.

Like, my first Pearl team included Turtwig, Starly, Shinx, Shellos, Riolu and Sneasel and their evolutions. Sneasel is nothing new, though, but Weavile is.
