I'm gonna say Half-Life 2 for the PC. If you haven't played it on the PC, do it, even with the release of the game on Orange Box. The PC version can not be passed up. And you cannot consider yourself a gamer unless you have played it.

Tough question to answer... You will probably hear a lot of Halo 1,2, or 3 responses and a bunch of Gears Of War responses also....Can't forget Oblivion. These are all games that are on the Xbox or Xbox360 but all are very popular. I have played all 3 of these games but I have to say that my favorites are Gears Of War and the Halo games.

In general, Its hard to say unless it relates to a certain genre, but the game I find the most enjoyable is Super Mario World for the SNES, a classic but that game has always been my favorite since I was about 6 or 7.

Final Fantasy VII is my earliest memory of a proper gaming experience. It's what got me into gaming in the first place and will always be one of my favourites.
It's hard to come up with a single, definitive answer for the best I've ever played though, and I can't be bothered going through them all.

There's nothing like quite like Max Payne.
Betrayal, conspiracey, romance; fire fights in a nasty-ass hotel and multi-story parking garage, escaping a burning inferno resturant, single handedly taking down a helocopter at the top of a huge downtown NYC skyscraper; running from the cops, mob, and crooked poltitions... all during the biggest blizzard in New York City history.

I'm sticking firmly with Gorge and his suggestion of Half Life 2. In my opinion it has the best single player campaign of all time by some distance. Untouchable.

I have to say GoldenEye, probably one of, if not the greatest FPS of all time.*
Tied in second is GTA: SA, and Halo 3, neither of those specific games reinvent their series or genres, but they do what they do extremely well.
*Sadly, I've never played Half-Life 2, simply due to either not having a computer, or having a sh*tty one that couldn't run it. I'm going to give it a go today though, albeit on the 360.

2. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
1. Starcraft + Brood War Expansion
Little known fact: the only game I've spent playing longer than San Andreas, is Starcraft, we're talking years of my life, gone.
I haven't played Half Life 2 because by the time I had a PC that could play it, Episode 1 had been out for a little bit and they said Episode 2 was going to be out soon, so I figured I'd wait for that, since they'd probably have some combo deal. And then orange box was announced, and now I'm trying to get money for the game.

The 360 port is actually very solid, so in the absence of being able to play it on the PC, that's a solid alternative.

I think it's pretty safe to say that Half Life 2 is one of the best games of all time, and that all haters should go eat some dirt.

9. Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War
Great choice. A few years ago I was hooked on this game over Live.
Favorite FPS: F.E.A.R. (F the haters!!!)
I finally got around to playing F.E.A.R. this summer for 360, and I was really impressed. The atmosphere is great, and I'm a big fan of the gameplay. It has one of the best shotguns ever for an FPS.
Copying other peoples' lists:
Favorite FPS: In terms of overall enjoyment, I'd have to say the original Halo. I've never got so much enjoyment from both single and multiplayer. Battlefield 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstien: Tides of War, F.E.A.R., Rainbow Six: 3, Half-Life 2, Halo 2 and 3, Call of Duty 2, and GoldenEye get an honorable mention. (I know I'm missing some too.)
Favorite 3rd Person Shooter: Splinter Cell. The original was my first espionage game, definitely got me hooked on the genre.
Favorite 3D Adventure Game: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Favorite RPG: I'm not a big fan of this genre, but Oblivion was amazing. I really need to finish that sometime..
Favorite Strategy: Full Spectrum Warrior
Favorite Sandbox Type Game: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. I enjoyed this one more than San Andreas actually. Just something about it.
Favorite Racing Game: Another genre I don't play a whole lot, but I always enjoy Mario Kart with friends.
Best Multiplayer: Halo: CE system link. I've had tons of system link games with friends all throughout high school. We're actually planning on having a big Halo party this winter over Christmas break, since we'll all be back from college. I can't wait. I also love(d) Battlefield 2 for the 360. It's just so addicting, I put over 300 hours into that game.
Favorite Sports: Madden 2005. One of the best football games, even compared to today's titles. The 'playmaking' ability on both offense and defense put so much strategy into this game. NCAA Football 2003 was also great, I must have done about ten dynasties.
Top Ten:
10. Rainbow Six: 3
9. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
8. Splinter Cell (the original)
7. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
6. Half-Life 2. (I never got all the way through this one, so I just can't put it above some other games that kept me busy for months.)
5. Halo 3. (Single player is much improved over Halo 2, and almost as fun as the first game's. The multiplayer is a blast.)
4. Return to Castle Wolfenstien: Tides of War
3. Madden 2005
2. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat
1. Halo: CE

Favorite 3D Adventure Game: Beyond Good & Evil
Favorite RPG: Wild ARMs
Favorite Strategy: Yggdra Union :p
Favorite Sandbox Type Game: Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction
Favorite Racing Game: Burnout: Takedown
Best Multiplayer: don't play many multi-player games, since all my neighborhood friends have moved on, but really enjoyed GoldenEye/Perfect Dark and Super Smash Brothers.

Burnout 3 Takedown. Giving the rights to EA was one of the best decisions in video game business. It was exactly what i wanted to do with cars. Burn'em.

I disagree. Giving any franchise to EA is like signing it's death warrant. EA likes to take popular franchises and put them out every year and the games end up being more and more mediocre year after year. Sure Takedown was good and all but if they force Criterion to make Burnouts every year, the series will start to smell of that "Been There Done That" stank that has plagued Need for Speed, Medal of Honor, and every sports series by EA including SSX (and that series isn't seen every year).
Remember that backwards step that Burnout Dominator took? Yeah that what I see in this series' future.

I cannot tell about sport games i do not play them. But imagine if the burnout series remained with acclaim. It probably would have gone in the trash, along with acclaim. EA has had a series of very succesful games apart from Burnout and do not tell me that there has not been a series that has taken a step back. Tekken 5 for instance. And burnouts are not made every year. Paradise was announced in 2006 and will be released in 2008. And if you want to talk about failed franchises in a series try Devil May Cry 2. And need for speed prostreet will be an all new need for speed check the website. It is because of electronic arts that need for speed is still here. And i have never heard people complain about any medal of honor. EA may have been a minor video game company in the past taking games like Warpath Jurassic Park but this is also how midway started. From failures. All series will sometime go out of fashion let's say. This does not go only for EA but for every single video game company. So if we put it this way, every game is doomed. But this is for the companies to take care of. And if i may say so, EA has done one hell of a job reviving games like NFS and Burnout. Before Burnout 3, Burnout was not a very popular game with the medium graphics of the first part and the crash glitches in Point of impact. EA took care of those problems with the best way possible, and that is proved by the awards B3 won. And every series has had a part that did not stand out. Tekken 4 let's say. So i still believe that Burnout's moving from Acclaim to EA was a very smart thing to do.

I Really Like Half-life 2, but there are other Games I love, like Mario. Portal Is fun, But I have to say Half Life 2 is I great game. I loved the single player campaign, I say. The orange Box pretty much puts 3 great games (ok, maybe 2...) in one Game! I recommend the box.

Favorite game of all time = Indigo Prophecy (aka Fahrenheit)

Phantom Dust for the Xbox. Even with halo, all those final fantasies, etc. I've always returned to Phantom Dust. Logged over 500 hours since the day it came out. And I'm still not tired of it. About forty minutes of that total was spent on live back when I had a subscription.
Sure, like all games, it has it's faults. but it easily looms over all my other games, in terms of how much time I've spent playing them.
I don't have an opinion on the best game I've ever played, but Phantom Dust is easily my favorite.

My favorite game is Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. I must have played that game about 20 times through. The story is just unlike anything I have ever played before. A truly awesome game to me.
