my GFs mother is pressuring her into taking this stuff. all i know is that it is for protection against an viral std which can lead to cancer(?).

anyways... she told me that her mom once had this virus, or something similar to that. is this "disease" genetic? or is it only obtained through sex? are there any serious side effects from this stuff?

What is Gardasil?

Human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause genital warts, cancer of the cervix, and various cancers of the vulva or vagina.

Gardasil is used to prevent genital warts and cervical/vaginal cancers caused by certain types of HPV (types 6, 11, 16, and 18) in girls and young women.

How is Gardasil given?

Gardasil is given as an injection (shot) into a muscle in your upper arm or thigh. You will receive this injection in a doctor's office or other clinic setting.

Gardasil is given in a series of 3 shots. You may have the first shot at any time as long as you are between the ages of 9 and 26 years old. Then you will receive a second shot 2 months later and a third shot 6 months later.

Be sure to receive all doses of Gardasil recommended by your healthcare provider or by the health department of the state you live in. If you do not receive the full series of vaccines, you may not be fully protected against the disease.

Gardasil should not be used in place of having a routine pelvic exam and Pap smear to screen for cervical cancer.

Basically what im reading is that, it is used to prevent a STD, and is given through shot not pills. But I haven't found anything to how long it lasts.

The best bet for your girlfriend is to ask her doctor. She has to get the shot from a doc anyway, so she might as well ask about risks and side effects while getting the pitch on benefits.

Gardasil is one of the name brands of a vaccine to ward off HPV, which causes cervical cancer.

Any sort of genital contact with an infected person can get you HPV. It is pretty harmless to get the shots... it is like the hepetitis shots. You get it 3 times, separated by 3 months. and then you're in the clear.

I hate Gardasil. It hurts like heck, but it's a good idea for her to get it. Cervix Cancer and Genital Warts are very painful. My mom had them.
